1. What is this website??
2. TiVo still exists? Why?
It's axiomatic that whenever there is a tivo deal posted on SD, there is going to be some tivo-hater who posts something snarky...and therein starts the battle. I give you some credit, your post doesn't go nearly as far as others have gone...so I don't quite put you in that bucket.
There are a ton of people who prefer tivo to streaming, which can lag horribly.
There are kids and grandkids on the cutting edge who have parents/grandparents who use tivo and just don't have the time or patience to try to teach their elders something new. For me, without tivo, I'd be getting endless calls from my parents and grandparents with all sorts of annoying TV questions.
OP links to a website that's been around for a long time selling tivo gear. For those who are still in the tivo world, the company is pretty well-known.
While I do understand the use case you are describing there are other low tech solutions out there to solve this like Tablo. Unless someone is already invested in Tivo with lifetime sub they are way overpriced for what they offer.
Respectfully disagree. Not even a close call.
Tablo is $200 for a 4-tuner unit. It includes no hard drive. Gotta buy that separately. And the interface, installation is a PIA. Oh, and if you want guide service, that's extra...gotta pay monthly or annually, right?
A 4-tuner 500gb OTA tivo with lifetime service is $300. I'd pay the delta in a heartbeat for a tivo.
And needless to say, tablo isn't a solution those who can't live with ota and for whatever reason don't want to stream and want cable.

I agree that delta is not that extensive when you only need service on the single screen. Tivo 4 tuner 500 GB is currently $350 vs Tablo 4 tuner with 5 TB (10x capacity) portable drive would be about $300. However economics completely fall apart for Tivo when you want to add Tivo to additional screens since you have to buy Minis every time.
My take is that Tablo is for people who want to add OTA and cut the cord. They would effectively augment their streaming app subscriptions with live TV from their market. It would be just another app on the streaming platform of their choice like Roku, Fire, etc.
Tivo is for folks who want to record their OTA or cable, have only single screen and their streaming app choices are very limited.
I'm not a Tablo user myself but have recommended it to quite a few people and they have been very happy with it. They did not require my help with setting it up and are happy with interface. I did have it for a bit back when they first released it and have tried Tivo back with Roamio OTA. Both had pros and cons and in the end I did something else altogether.
All that said I'm glad it works for you and if you're happy then that's all that matters.
I came to this thread to see if Tivo did something new but seems like it's same old stuff. When they open up their platform to an app access from Roku, Fire. etc then it will change things dramatically but until they insist on charging for Minis it is not a platform would consider.

TiVo service is $15/month. That's absurd. That's what cable companies charge for their cloud storage dvr. This company can't help but rip off it's customers.
I've been running TIVO with DVR + 5 mini's in various rooms of the house. Bought lifetime subscription like 4 yrs ago. Saved a boatload vs renting from Verizon or Comcast all these units. Only pay $4.99 for the cablecard.

I have both Tivo and Tablo devices. The OTA image quality looks significantly worse on Tablo. I was comparing a Tivo Mini Vox against a Roku Ultra running the Tablo app and everything connected via ethernet. Quite surprising to me.

I honestly don't recall the difference, been few years since I've used either one of those. Maybe Tablo compresses signal before sending it over to the app.

Who is paying $15/mo?
2TB Edges for Cable **with** lifetime are $500 on Amazon (that's $500 for the unit, including the $550 service).
Bolts are $300-$350 **with** lifetime.
Minis include service.
If you're paying monthly for tivo service, it's time to dump the tivo and go with something else or upgrade to a box that includes the service!

And the clock would still be flashing 12:00
