I might get downvoted here but the truth is, if $4 is the budget then the saw will run. It would take running the saw continuously for a long time to overheat the cord, and I would think a circular saw typically gets run in short bursts of maybe 30 seconds, or like a minute max.

Besides overheating, the other concern is voltage drop. Running an electric motor at too low a voltage will shorten its lifespan (on top of producing less torque). The longer and thinner the cord, and the greater the power being drawn, the more the voltage drops.

But 25 feet is not an excessively long cord. This calculator [inchcalculator.com] says the drop on a 25 foot long 16 gauge copper cord drawing 15 amps is only about 2.5%. I.E. If the voltage at the wall is 120 volts, the saw is still getting 117 volts while running on this cord.

IMO it would be fine to run a 15 amp circular saw on this. Just don't chain 5 of them end to end and run it 125 feet from the wall.

anything less than 15A (wall receptacle) and not having a correctly sized circuit breaker should be illegal. It is not safe when people inadvertently plug in a 15A load

It's good for up to 1500W. Most home outlets are rated for 1800W, but very few appliances will come close to drawing that much. Things I wouldn't plug into this include an air conditioner or any portable electric heater, but that goes for the majority of extension cords. For the majority of things this is a good cord.

I've had three of these cords for two years. Bought them about this time and same price. No regrets. They are actually fairly rugged compared to what you'd expect. I wouldn't care if they were neon pink, I only care if they work and work well. They do. Just use a tiny shred of common sense and keep the load under 13amps and you'll love these.

Edit: I didn't see that these were the single outlet type on the female end. Mine are the triple female end (in-line, not crow's foot). The type in this thread is better IMO. Less opportunity for overloading AND less opportunity for the elements to do damage to unoccupied outlets. I may grab a few of these for rare times they may see morning dew...

Quick noob question: What exactly happens (or can happen) if the load is greater than 13A on this?
Thanks

The load exceeds the cable's capacity, but since your breaker is most likely rated 15 or 20A, the current is allowed to continue...melting the cable and potentially starting a fire.

That's the essentials, I'm sure an electrician would love to clarify.

Just don't run your space heater on high or run 10 things off the cable simultaneously. Common sense stuff...

The cord will heat up and the insulation may melt, creating a fire risk.

Space heaters are never to be used with an extension cord
