All the answers you've gotten thus far are wrong. It used to be that you can keep the 360 games, but those have been removed from the rotation. Microsoft switched to the way PS+ works. You can only play with an active Gold or Game Pass subscription. From the FAQ site:

You'll no longer be able to access your Games with Gold titles if you cancel your subscription. However, if you decide to renew your subscription at any time, you'll be able to access and play your previously redeemed Games with Gold titles again.

I'm new to the Xbox membership. Do the games become unplayable at the end of the promotion period? Or do you keep them as long as your membership is active?

I hear you. You don't get the games if you aren't a member, so they aren't free. They're a perk of being a member and I don't think these games are high enough quality to be considered perks or bonuses. They're trash and perfect examples of why I'm no loner a member.

They are focusing on gamepass. I think they are looking to axe gold.

I have 3+ years left of gamepass ultimate from doing the $90 vpn deal a while back, but I don't think I would pay normal sticker price for it, the playlist is too curated for Gen Z casuals and they keep removing games from the catalog even when they have no reason to

Incorrect, if you don't have Gold, you will not have any of the GWG Xbox One games. You only keep the Xbox 360 games, that they have since stopped giving out.

On the bright side, every game that's been offered for close to a year now I didn't have in my library. The bad news is that I haven't heard of the majority of them before getting them free.
