Good price, Camel shows the previous low around $300 for this model. Costco also has the Vitamix E520 [costco.com] for $299 ($399 minus $100 manufacturer savings 12/31 to 1/13). The E520 has a 64oz container, while the E310 has a 48oz container. Separately, the 64oz container and lid is around $150.

Project Farm recently compared blenders [youtube.com], including a higher-end Vitamix.

The Costco E520 has presets which make it more convenient, but I don't know if the sale is still going.

This is a good price for this unit new. The sale price for refurbs was $190 from Vitamix directly.

Great price for the light duty user. But the 48 oz, shorter warranty, plastic frame and lower power were deal breakers for me. I tried the E320 which comes with 64 oz and 2.2 hp motor but it was still too noisy. No regrets on the 7500 and it goes on sale for $300. 7 yr instead of 5 yr warranty. Ascent has 10 years.

I just purchased this for my SO for Christmas. We are shipping it back. The E520 seems to do smoothies well however making simple dips it just locks up. We have to manually stir things around for it to work again. Not your typical Vitamix performance.

Thank you for posting. The plastic frame Explorian Series is billed as an "introduction to Vitamix". Potential buyers seem unaware of this. I recommend a hands on comparison with a G series like the 7500 or Pro 750 to experience the difference. These hit $300 and $390 respectively even if only for a few hours 2-3 times a year.

Vitamix reps have told me that all models use the same motor. This isn't true. There are many things that they are not allowed to disclose such as ease of changing out blade assembly or container compatibility. Besides, specs are subject to change. Check the rating label, weigh the motor base. Economy models look the same as commercial grade.

5200 compared: Why does anyone still buy this? It is an older weaker model which lacks the important pulse mode and was replaced with stronger much improved Next Generation G series. The 5200 gets praise not deserved imo only because it is supplied with a tall container. I would buy the 060865 tall 64 oz container separately and use it with my G series before buying 5200 blender. Or to save more, a commercial versions of the tall container. But the low 64 oz is the most versatile container. Small batches come out fine if people will only cover the blades with liquid and use full power.

Also to add, the E520 has the same model number as the E310. If you were considering the two, stick with the Amazon deal as you can but this unit and the two tumblers separate for less.

To see past deals I switch to the full site option then search. While Explorian is the most common on craigslist others and myself have found deals on G and even A series for under $100 still under warranty. It's all about being able to identity models by photo. When making an offer I price in the cost of a new container especially if the blade assembly date is > 3 years. The drive socket on the motor may need replacing $15. A missing lid or tamper add to the cost. Most containers fit the G series with commercial containers coming in at a lower cost.

edit: direct from Vitamix a low price for a new G series has happened 1 or 2 x a year.

Certified refurbished are just as good but they are not always priced low enough to justify the reduced warranty.

Typo? E310 is not the same as the the E520. Both are Explorian series but the E520 adds presets, a more powerful motor and 64 oz container. The E320 is similar to the 520 but without presets. The "20" models are made for Costco and offer a 7 yr warranty instead of 5 yr iirc.

Think about what is the cheapest way to do business.

It's likely that a few of the models use the same motor. The difference is in the power output permitted by the motor controller. the cheaper models will use a less powerful driver for the motor but the motor itself is likely physically the same because it's cheaper to manufacture that way.

It's like how Tesla sold the lower end Model S with the smaller battery, but they all had the same battery. The cheaper one was just limited in the software.

Can I ask what you are blending for which a 2hp motor is not sufficient?

The average cheapo walmart blender that most people buy has less than 1 hp.

2hp might as well be a Cadillac V series.

More than the raw horsepower the G series has a metal frame heavy duty construction and sound insulation. Yes, Explorian is a highly capable blender. Some even have the 2.2 hp motor. In almost anything purchased today it is important to look at the entire product beyond one or two published specifications. I like green juice. For it to stay green and not oxidize to brown liquification needs to occur quickly. A real juicer such as a masticating one produces a higher quality juice without air introduction but these are more expensive and time consuming to use. I am still learning. Blending is an art. If the goal is to blend an occasional tasty sweet drink then a $75 blender may be fine. I use my G series several times a day even liquifying food scaps as I do not have a garbage disposal or waste pick up. There is no one-size-fits-all. If I am spending $300 then it isn't going to be on a cost-reduced Explorian. YMMV.

Thanks for that explanation. It's fascinating and it added some depth to my understanding of how people choose blenders. You're decision sounds like a good one.
