100% not merely branding... These just work. As many others have stated here (and everywhere), the Philips Hue lights are definitely made to last and I don't recall ever having connection / control issues.
Over the last decade plus I've tried just about every other popular brand (in the -50% price range) and dozens of cheap-o direct from AliExpress brands. Every one has developed some sort of functional issue over time (bulbs split or controller dies, strips stop connecting and / or working all together, locked in one color, etc., etc). Many require some sketchy app to pair / connect initially.
Most of the cheap ones also lack in the color range / brightness departments as well. Orange and greens look more yellow, etc. Hue's (current gen, at least) do a great job in both brightness and color accuracy.
You can def save a few bucks and get adequate results, but this is absolutely one of those 'buy nice or buy twice' situations imo.
Wow, $99 off, ehh? Now that is Slick. I wonder why BestBuy has them on clearance. Now I know what I'm going to do with my extra Philips Hue exterior motion detector!!!

Why are these so incredibly expensive? It's a genuine question. Is it the different colors and patterns you can do or...?

Got one being delivered, had $15 in BB rewards I needed to use up- they really don't give you enough time to use these rewards- it's like 90 days or something. I don't have a real need for this Hue light at the moment, but it's remarkable how I always eventually do find a use for these and I'm invested into the ecosystem
I'm assuming I can use this with my Sync setup…

They don't attach to each other but you can put them in the same group on the hue app so they turn on together. I put 2 or these on my porch and I did notice on one side of the strip the light goes to the end of the strip but on the other side the last 1in plus doesn't light up. If you install 2 together and attach the correct side it will look like 1 continuous piece.
