Chase Sapphire Preferred - Pay Yourself Back - Gas Stations/Grocery Stores

I am posting this because after a LONG while, you now have more options again for Pay Yourself Back than just 25% to Charities. On my Sapphire Preferred PYB page, the new options for Gas Stations and Grocery Stores showed up today, January 1, 2023. Details are still vague, but past history has been 10% to 25% bonus on point redemption and both are valid through 3/31/23.

Attachment 12760864

NEW
Gas Stations (including paying at the pump or inside the station)
(Unknown)% more points value (usually 10%)
Redeem up to (unknown - usually $500 or 45,454 pts)
Valid through 03/31/21

NEW
Grocery Stores (including eligible delivery services, and most likely NOT Walmart)
(Unknown)% more points value (usually 10%)
Redeem up to (unknown - usually $500 or 45,454 pts)
Valid through 03/31/22

Select charities
25% more points value
Valid through 12/31/23

Charges must be made on the CSP card to use PYB bonus. However, you can move points from other cards on your Chase accounts to the CSP and apply them to the PYB bonus.
  • Currently, only redemptions against purchases made with your Chase card with Ultimate Rewards at gas stations (including paying at the pump or inside the station), for grocery stores (including eligible delivery services), and for select charitable organizations will qualify.

This thread is not for those who like to bring up "You get better point value for travel transfers". Yes, we know CSP/CSR are good for travel. I don't travel enough to use any of the partner bonuses, and I'm sure many others don't either. I use all my cards for the 1% to 5% back, and if I can get a 10% to 25% redemption bonus now and then for something I DO use then it's a value to me and others.

Nope, thanks. No more CSR

Each point you redeem for a statement credit toward eligible purchases at gas stations (including paying at the pump or inside the station) and for grocery stores (including eligible delivery services) via Pay Yourself Back is worth $0.01 (one cent), which means that 100 points equals $1.00 in redemption value. Each point you redeem for a statement credit toward eligible purchases for select charitable organizations via Pay Yourself Back is worth $0.0125 (one and a quarter cents), which means that 100 points equals $1.25 in redemption value. Chase has the right to change redemption values at any time.

So what's the point of this when there's no boost in the new categories?

PYB was never a feature expected with the card. Wasnt it brought in during covid? I guess it was a way to justify the fee increase for many users. I definitely took advantage of it a couple of times and wiped out a lot of my points, but I dont know if it is the deciding factor for me.

I dont travel much, maybe 2-3 flights a year. Hotels more often as we vacation to places in driving distance. But, with a family of 4, it is a great way to use points for flights. I also take advantage of combining points from my other cards - Freedom, Freedom Unlimited, Business Ink. For people in a similar situation to me, especially not being a big enough traveler to have a loyalty to a specific airline or hotel chain, as well as a decent spender, the card is still worth it. If I just had the CSR and no other points, there are probably better cards out there for me. But the combination of the CSR and the three other cards provides a good benefit for me.

In the fine print it says that gas and groceries are only 100% with Pay Yourself Back (one point equals one cent); there's no boost. Charity is the only one with the boost to 125%.
Wondering how to pay using ultimate points

That's fine and all, but if we remove the feature, then what is the point of the increase in annual fee? Without the flexibility of PYB points usage, there really is no justification to the increase in the annual fee. If anything it should go back to the old cost.

PYB was not one of the benefits included because of the increase. The increase was announced in 2019 and became effective in Jan 2020. PYB was sort of a perk added during covid to entice people to keep their card, and didnt begin until May 2020, being available pretty quickly after it was announced.

Im looking at the pay yourself back feature now and it looks like there is no added bonus. You can pay yourself back for gas and groceries but it's no different than if you cashed out your points. Really pointless.

In general, if1:1 to pay your charge (or statement balance) using points is bad deal. The reason is that the expenses are no longer qualified for earning points for future use.

How is this any different than just cashing out your points regularly? I'm looking now with the CSP, and it's just a 1:1 redemption.

Feels kind of pointless honestly.

This may be off topic, but what is the best way to use these points for air travel? I have read about transferring to different airlines to get better deals, etc. Chase Sapphire Preferred is our first card with travel points. Any websites that can give us guidance on how to get the best deal?
