Chase Sapphire Preferred - Pay Yourself Back - Gas Stations/Grocery Stores

I am posting this because after a LONG while, you now have more options again for Pay Yourself Back than just 25% to Charities. On my Sapphire Preferred PYB page, the new options for Gas Stations and Grocery Stores showed up today, January 1, 2023. Details are still vague, but past history has been 10% to 25% bonus on point redemption and both are valid through 3/31/23.

NEW
Gas Stations (including paying at the pump or inside the station)
(Unknown)% more points value (usually 10%)
Redeem up to (unknown - usually $500 or 45,454 pts)
Valid through 03/31/21

NEW
Grocery Stores (including eligible delivery services, and most likely NOT Walmart)
(Unknown)% more points value (usually 10%)
Redeem up to (unknown - usually $500 or 45,454 pts)
Valid through 03/31/22

Select charities
25% more points value
Valid through 12/31/23

Charges must be made on the CSP card to use PYB bonus. However, you can move points from other cards on your Chase accounts to the CSP and apply them to the PYB bonus.
  • Currently, only redemptions against purchases made with your Chase card with Ultimate Rewards at gas stations (including paying at the pump or inside the station), for grocery stores (including eligible delivery services), and for select charitable organizations will qualify.

This thread is not for those who like to bring up "You get better point value for travel transfers". Yes, we know CSP/CSR are good for travel. I don't travel enough to use any of the partner bonuses, and I'm sure many others don't either. I use all my cards for the 1% to 5% back, and if I can get a 10% to 25% redemption bonus now and then for something I DO use then it's a value to me and others.

In the fine print it says that gas and groceries are only 100% with Pay Yourself Back (one point equals one cent); there's no boost. Charity is the only one with the boost to 125%.

You know, what you say may be correct… I didn't even read it like that. But then what is the point of even listing categories when I can just convert points at the standard 100:$1.00 and put it as a direct statement credit for ANYTHING I charge on the CSP?

Yes traveling costs you even more money unless someone is paying you to do it like for business. Are any of these options valid for the business cards?

I have this card, but never utilized the "pay yourself back" feature. Does anyone mind explaining what it does/is?

Basically you can redeem the Ultimate Reward point for the amount you already spent in eligible category for extra 25%value. Typically 1 point = 1 cent, in this case 1 point = 1.25 cent. For example, you have 10,000 UR point in your Chase account and you pump $60 at the gas station using the Chase Saphire card, after the transaction posted, you can use 4800 UR point to cover the $60 gas charge (instead of 6000 points)... after redeemed, you will see another transaction in your accout showing -60.00

Yes, that was one of the big reasons I kept the card. Time for a re-think next time it's due for renewal.

It's still 50% on travel, but the travel prices are usually higher than I could book directly - the discounts that other sites offer aren't there, and neither are the member discounts for booking directly with hotels for example. So it's not really 50%.

This sucks. for saphire reserve, the bonus on home depot got taken away, but was replaced dining with 50% bonus, which was amazing, now the cuts have started. they also reduced the annual fee bonus from 50% to 25%. also, the new critia, gas and grocery stores, which is convenient, are only at 25% bonus from precious 50%. Very annoyed!!

I am so sad after reading this.

Totally forgot to clear out my points before the end of last year with the reserve.
Pay back went from 150% to 125% on easy to use categories…
Face palm.

I am in the same boat. For those that are figuring out an exit strategy, Chase recently send out a notice of changes to the account terms that take effect on 2/16/2023 for the minimum payment and late fees. If you reject the changes they will evidently close the account instead of allowing you to opt out. I'm trying to figure out if that means we have a chance at getting the annual fee back....
