What about using it for music / video production? Like storing sound libraries & large files to be edited & audio recording / Logic Pro X and such??

How does this compare to Sandisk portable SSD?
Besides being faster, SanDisk are a lot better at sustaining write speed, but you do pay for it $. The 2tb version of Crucial (4tb will have improved performance) will slow down to about 150 MBps after about 250 MBps.

I have bought a number of SSD's the last couple of years, but they were regular ones without being encased. I bought some 9 dollar SSD external cases for the SSD to use in other PC's, and like the flexablity of being able use inside pc or outside pc with external case.

Now, can you remove the casing if I wanted to use the 2tb or 4tb version to use inside PC?

Any others that you also recommend?

Did you measure the actual speed? What do you mean by horrible?

XBox series has usb 3.2 gen 1 at 625mb/s… so slower than this drive full speed of 1050mb/s.

SteamDeck has usb 3.2 gen 2 and will get full speed out of those drive.

This will be plenty fast for either use. I've been using one for over a year on my various pcs and it works very well.
30-60MBps after the first few gigs on both systems.

I believe the numbers you quoted were meant to be in MBps and not Mbps.

This drive won't support trim on either system as it only supports it with ntfs.

The write speeds for long sustained writes on this arent great, because it's DRAM-less. So its fine for stuff that will be written once and read numerous times that would benefit from the fast response and read speeds of an SSD, like gaming.
Crucial x8 has dram.

The drive was faulty or you weren't doing something right… USB. 2.0 port or something.

I've been using three of these (2x 2tb and 1x 1tb) for between 8-12 months and don't have any problems with read/write. I have one with ~300gb left and still fast as it was empty. I use them for game storage and playing for the most part. No issues.

I was using the included usb cable. Are you using them with a steam deck or a pc? I only tested with the exfat and ext4 formats so I have no idea how it performs with other formats. As I said it supports trim for NTFS format but not the other two. Unsure if that's part of it.

I got much better performance from the sandisk extreme (consistent 250-350MBps) as well as my internal ssd / enclosure combo drives (350+MBps).

Got mine yesterday. Copying data to it from my 7 years old windows machine was painfully slow, but copying data from the drive to my M1 Pro Macbook was really fast. Copied 400 GB of data in 15 minutes.

Another test. I wrote the same 400 GB (371 GB) back to the SSD from my internal Mac drive and it took ~ 53 minutes. The drive has 256 GB cache, and it is super-fast for the first 256 GB or so of data write and then slows down significantly (about 50 MB in my case). I am going to return mine and get a TLC based drive. If you don't write data in large chunks to your external drive, this will work well for you.
