Can off-brand ink be used with this? Just had a Dell laser all-in-one die and need a replacement rather quickly.
It uses tanks to hold ink you refill by emptying a bottle into the tank. Unlike inkjet cartridges with chips that may keep a printer from working with knock-off brands, ink is ink. So YES, and Amazon sells lots of different ones.
BUT, you might consider a bit more robust printer. Not sure what Dell you had (must be old since Dell hasn't sold printers for many, many years), but there is a PIXMA G7020 also on sale at Walmart that might last longer. Also check Epson for their EcoTank models and Brother for their Inkvestment printers, all which use TANKS instead of individual cartridges. Net effect is less expensive to refill when ink runs out.
Costco and Sam's Club also have deals on tank-style inkjet printers.
How is the photo quality? Good for making art prints?
It is a 4 color machine. For photos I would say 5 or 6 color machine has generally better color. I use canon ts8320 and cartridge from ez-ink. The photo quality is stunning.

Thanks, previously had a color inkjet and got the cheap ink from eBay and used syringes to refill, was a bit of a pain and messy as well.
