Fixed that for you... thanks. I thought it was on Seagate that was doing SMR. ... guess not.

It uses SMR/Shingled technology. Avoid at all costs.

Pretty much all external drives use shingled technology, which overlays a small portion of tthe data over top of the data that came before it. When modifying older data, this means the write speeds slow to worse than dialup internet speeds and drastically reduces the lifespan of the drive itself. My drive lasted less than a year despite being used solely for backups simply because deleting old backups caused it to run for days at a time.
You're far better off ordering a USB enclosure and an internal hard drive that uses either PMR or CMR technology. Those are far more reliable than this piece of e-waste. see less
I'm pretty sure most or all modern portable drives (especially the slim ones) will be SMR. This one is SMR.
All 4TB+ passports I've seen since ~2017 are SMR.

Is it really that bad of a deal? I need something to backup all my photos and videos. While I enjoy using google photos, I want something more permanent and offline.

good enough. cheapest right now for 4tb external HD. google photos doesnt store unlimited photos though.

Oh I know. I purchase storage through them. 4gb is way more than I need technically but figured I'd get enough to last me a long time. Plus I figured backing up full 4k files and raw files will take up space on a harddrive. I know google photos does some compression.

I can't speak to the longevity, but my God these things are slow, and not just compared to SSDs. I'll use them for TimeMachine but that's about it.
