Decent price but the recently announced 7800X3D will most likely, in gaming, eat either of these (and some) for breakfast. 7950X3D should match it for productivity and do the same for gaming.
Yup. There is no point in the 13900 if the 8 core part Zen 4 is going to beat it for cheaper. The 7800X3D should sell like hotcakes just like the 5800X3D. Price wise, add $50 on top of the current CPU lineup's MSRP. So, the 7800X3D will hold the same price as the 5800X3D at $450, $600 7900X3D, $750 7950X3D.

Wish there was a 13600K deal outside of MicroCenter ...
It's been down to 300 at Amazon and eBay via antonline. I also missed both of those sales unfortunately. Just picked it up for 320 at Amazon last night.

what's a good enough cpu to match with a 3090? Would this one be overkill?

Check your local market place, might be cheaper if you buy it from there. Just snatched a i9 13900k for $450 cash a few weeks ago.

I would go with a 13700. But there are some posters here who aggressively argue anything over the 13600 is a waste for gaming. I don't agree, but that's the other opinion. i9 is overkill unless you have needs more intensive than gaming.
It wasn't too long ago that people were arguing you'll never need more than 4 cores for gaming. I wonder how many of those misers still run 4-core processors.

have they fixed the bios/mb issues with 690 boards? I know you get 2? fewer pcie lanes, but it seems to kill the 12900kf i have... using carbon wifi motherboard. Any clue?

difference between F and K?
For Intel desktop SKUs:
"F" = No integrated graphics
"K" = Unlocked multiplier (overclockable)
"T" = Low Power (usually 35W base power)

Just got the 13900k from Best Buy for $600 but total of 7% rewards back, so basically same price here. Thinking maybe I should return it and mobo for 7950x3d lol.

Best Msi brand motherboard to use with this out of the box?
Probably this...

If you do full watercooling this seems interesting, but you will have to flash the bios for 13th gen.

I've built my own computers since I was 11.

For the first time since integrated graphics became a thing I bought an F. And I'm slightly worried, iGPU makes troubleshooting so much easier if you aren't getting a video signal.

It's usually not worth the ~$30 savings for the F-variants unless you are strictly (and I mean, strictly) gaming. Intel's integrated graphics are a highly-optimized acceleration tool for video transcode, media playback, etc.

Agreed, it was a frontpage deal around Christmas and kind of an impulse purchase as there had been a great half off deal for a matching motherboard deal. I really should have went to /r/hardwareswap first and probably could have grabbed the better i7 non-F than the i5 F for that Gen for maybe $20-25 more.

Would be a different conversation if they used the room for the integrated graphics to bump another spec up making F more like a K- type processor.
