Back when this was a good deal… have 6 in the garage for this exact shelf with casters. I recommend the caster wheels as the legs aren't as sturdy without them. Shelves are strong just don't use a rubber mallet to put them together or they'll bend. The shelves have held up great in the garage.

I like wire shelving for the longevity and the customization/optional parts you can add. Not a fan of the particle board for the reasons you mentioned. The other common retail option is plastic shelving, which is effectively disposable to me due to the sag that occurs over time under moderate load. Plus the cost is relatively high. I've used plenty of big box store plastic shelf product including the supposed heavy duty Lowe's Commander stuff, I would only consider plastic for dorm/apartment/frequent moving situations or very light loading.


I bought this set two years ago, assuming nothing has changed:
Poles: 7/8" diameter, will accept 3/8" threaded casters


On most shelving they give a max weight per shelf then multiply x number of shelves to come up with a total rating. I wouldn't trust these or any retail shelves to hold nearly a ton or more or whatever they claim. It can stand on its own, but it's always safer to attach to walls especially if you have kids at the climbing stage.


For reference I have these loaded with maybe 100-150lbs on lower shelves and tapering off as I go up, and am comfortable with that and am not seeing shelf sag. The inserts have not failed on me yet. I would consider these fine for most homeowner uses. A superior product would use 1" poles which is more "commercial grade" and is what the restaurant supply, commercial suppliers, and warehouse clubs typically sell. I got a good clearance price on Hyper Tough and 36" width worked out better for me, otherwise I would have gone with the Sams Club option below.

Potential better deals right now:
1) Hyper Tough Heavy Duty 5 shelf unit (3000 lb capacity Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)Smilie) is on clearance and still showing at $40 on brickseek if you can find them, there's a thread here somewhere. I saw very few of these this year, seems highly YMMV.

2) Sams' Members Mark 48" x 18" wire shelving unit with 1" poles, normally $119, is $99 for most of this month. Last I checked an extra shelf, shelf liners, and casters are included (those pieces are at least $60-70 if ordered separately). If you have a use for the extras, Hyper Tough cannot touch that value unless they reach really deep clearance like the $38 unicorn deal with casters (and AFAIK the casters-included HT sets don't exist in-store any more). Be warned the boxed Sams unit is significantly heavier than HT.

Yes, absolutely. It's sturdy and holds a lot. The poles are thick and the wire mesh shelves feel strong. I have the shelves packed with stuff in the garage. No issues in three years of use.

The quality of these aren't good at all. I mean if you are putting 5lbs or so on each shelf, OKAY but the tubes are terrible and the inserts go bad quick if you put any weight on it that you might think "That should hold this." It may hold for a brief time but ruin the cheap plastic.

I have all of these plus some stockpots, cast iron Dutch ovens, and more on this same unit with castors in my kitchen pantry. No sagging or signs of wear.

How would casters make it more stable? It thought it would be less stable with casters if it doesn't need to be moved

They have a rating of how much weight it can hold with casters on and off… the weight it can hold is higher with casters on according to the company. Also with movement it would be less prone to tip over being that wheels… move…

I bought these shelves exactly 2 years ago in silver and also bought these casters for them also at Walmart: HSS 4" Heavy Duty Casters, 3/8" Bolt, Weight Capacity 600 lbs. They fit perfectly. I think there is also a 3" wheel diameter version that will fit which I would have bought had I known about it at the time. The 4" are now $20+ but back when I bought them they were $15, alas inflation.

Absolutely- I use these for my pantry shelves (got them when they were $38) and they work great. YMMV/at your own risk- I put them together differently, making them share 1-2 legs between shelves depending on how they were aligned. So I have 3 shelves in an L shape which gave me extra legs (can make more shelves if you space the shelves far apart enough on the original setup) and made it sturdier so it can't tip as easy. Of course, I still load the heavier items towards the bottom in general.

Casters raise the center of mass and casters often don't rotate to allow things to move in the direction you are trying to move them. Both of which increase the potential for tipping. I would advise to buy a wall anchor (minimally something like a load rated cable tie and wood screw to mount into a wall stud such as https://www.homedepot.com/p/South.../206848306) as opposed to adding casters if someone's concern is about shelving tipping over from causes like a child climbing on it.

I've got some of these in black before, same price. But now the (I believe) more durable chrome finish is available. I will probably get a couple more!

As a point of comparison, I recently also purchased the HDX shelving from HD in identical dimensions, which sold for $30 more! I believe the shelving is identical, with the exception of some of the packaging - all the specs are identical.

Free delivery makes it a pretty good deal given today's prices.
