Anyone know if this will work in a PS5? The specs are a bit below the stated minimums for a PS5, but there are not that far off.

I'm not a gamer but I think it will. Just search for it on SD and you'll find that the question has been asked/answered about 100x....

I have a technical question regarding power consumption that I hope someone can provide insight.

I'm leaning towards purchasing either the Crucial P3 (Gen3) or this P3+. My intended use is as a secondary drive on an LG Gram. The notebook only supports PCIe Gen 3 so will not benefit from any additional speed the P3+ would offer. I could probably justify the additional cost for "future proofing" but realistically speaking, when I move to another laptop, the performance delta not that great and by then, Gen 4 may be considered obsolete.

Aside from slightly lower cost, a primary draw of the P3 is power efficiency and heat, especially important with any laptop. According to TomsHardware.com, the P3 was the most power efficient NVMe SSD ever tested, better than either SK Hynix Gold / Platinum and besting the P3+ by 13%.

But I'm wondering, would the P3+ be more power efficient running in a PCIe Gen 3 environment? The speed (thru put) performance should be close to the same for either the P3 or P3+ but would the P3+ consume less power in a PCIe Gen 3 machine?

No, a gen 4 drive will not consume less power when used with a Gen 3 device. I would probably expect a gen 4 nvme to be more power efficient in a speed/watt perspective. But I'm assuming the idle power usage is what you're more worried about, which would not change dependent on the device a drive is put in.

Agreed. I also get tired of the same repetitive pathetic question every time a NVMe SSD deal is posted. And if this thread goes for more than a half a page, it will likely be asked ... again and again and again....
Remember No HDMI? Reminds me of that in a way lol

What are folks using large SSDs for, if not as boot drives? Mostly for games, video and photo editing, massive data sets, etc.? This much super fast storage seems cool, but I honestly don't know what I'd use it for myself, not being into any of these.

(And no, I don't care about anyone's pron collection, which an SSD seems kind of pointless for anyway.)

Do all LG Grams have a empty slot for a secondary NVMe M.2 hard drive? Or is it only the larger ones like 16 inch and certain year models like 2022?

Not all of the older LG Grams have the extra slot but believe it is a standard feature since 2021, at least for the 15" and larger. Think it may have been a tradeoff for the RAM slot that was once common in the Gram. .

It is because the flash behind its pSLC cache is very, very slow - in fact one of the slowest on the market in its class. Once you overwhelm the cache its write speeds drop to ~100MB/s until it has had some time to catch up. While a slowdown of some sort is true of virtually every modern consumer solid state drive on the market, this model is particularly worse off.

In its defense 1) it can absorb ~550GB of sequential writes at north of 4GB/s before the cache is overwhelmed and 2) this particular usage pattern I'm describing is way outside of how most people are going to use it.

So all in all it is a pretty good deal if you need a system drive of some kind. For me though, I'm looking for a 4TB m.2 SSD to use in an external enclosure for bulk data transport; so this is probably not going to be the one for me.
