Reward points change:
The second change is that on February 14, 2023, earning points on eligible Best Buy purchases will become an exclusive benefit of the My Best Buy® Credit Card.
I know that sucks! But tbh I feel like I barely get rewards as a non credit card holder but I personally feel as if free shipping offsets it.
Yes.

This is actually a winner for those who DONT regularly shop there. They even get to save more $ on the spot as a perk versus needing to spend $250 to get a measly perk of $5 reward certificate.

Immediate dividend is what I'm talking about.

not arguing with most of your points, and the the $200 price tag being a big much. but best buy also offers 24 month warranty on most items you buy if you're a TT member. this is a good deal for most and also includes apple care for apple devices.
I agree that those are very useful benefits (AppleCare on items starts to add up...$30 for AirPods, etc.), and the free install+haul away.

Thing is, the population of people who would actually use these things is not that great. People don't think to shop Best Buy for big items that makes free install + haul away useful. Ask people about where to shop for a washer & dryer, they'll say HD, Lowes, Amazon. Ask people where to shop for a fridge, they'll say the same. And while free AppleCare is great, that requires Apple lovers making the choice to buy at Best Buy over say...the Apple store. Sure, we here on SD love seeing those deals pop up for iPad on discount, or AirPods on discount at Best Buy. But the majority of people go to Apple store.

physical 4K movies look much better than streaming 4K. Streaming 4K is more like watching a blu-ray.
also you can touch physically

I was actually just reading about more store closings that just happened. I'm not sure if Best Buy is changing things up, but I don't think people are going into stores as often so they're adapting.
My store (Philadelphia suburb) just got an entire store remodel, and at the same time not long ago, closed our location next to one of the biggest malls in the country (king of Prussia)... Seems like they are just investing in stores that produce and getting rid of dead weight.

This will work out better for me.

It's pretty typical that I would end up shy of the $35 needed for free shipping and then abandon whatever was in the cart. My local store does not have the greatest stock, and has twice cancelled items I bought for pick-up because they didn't actually have them. (The first time, I was able to switch it to shipping, but the second was just cancelled with no option.)

I don't order enough from Best Buy to rack up certificates, so this is long term much better for the amount of stuff I buy.

If you're like me and have a $5 reward certificate to burn, this might help finding cheap accessories via the outlet.

Great you don't feel bad about stealing movies.
No, because I don't steal anything. I spend my money on physical discs and then rip them to my server. A gray area for sure based on the letter of the DMCA, but I do not share or distribute outside my own home.

Also isn't it 200 PER YEAR for 2 years to get the full 24 months? So if you cancel after 1 year, your extended warranty ends? Not sure how this works for apple products, but for non apple products the insurance coverage works this way

This is great for people who don't shop there all the time but want to take advantage of an occasional cheap movie, game, or cable deal

Was there ever one?
  • Free GeekSquad...who uses that?
  • Special member pricing...the prices are either eventually made available to everyone, or Amazon & Walmart match them.
  • Free install and haul away...most people prefer to do their own install. But its not worth $199.
  • Extended warranty coverage - useful, if you are the kind of person who breaks their toys.
  • VIP chat...this was never really that useful compared to the regular phone line when I had this as a MyBestBuy Premium member.
  • Free 2-day shipping...you could still get free shipping with a minimum, and store-pickup or ship-to-store was always free.
  • Extended 60 day return window - it doesn't eliminate restocking fees or the activated device return window.
I think the most useful of the items are free install and extended warranty coverage. Problem is, most techies/capable people don't ever need either.
Lol acting like free install, haul away, and warranty are useless. You definitely don't deal with appliances

That just took away one of the major reasons to have totaltech
Totaltech is a ripoff unless you buys LOTS of tech. They say 2 years but don't make it clear you need to pay $199 per year so basically $400 to get the two years. Most CC give extended warranties. Costco can get up to 4 years total for free just using their CC @ Costco.

If the family has multiple MacBooks, iPhones and iPads, all bought at BB with TotalTech, then maybe. But for most people, who sign up thinking they will buy more gear and don't...it's a losing deal.

Most CC's offer extended warranties for free. How many appliances do you buy a year, every year? I bought one freezer from BB after 15 years. They had a small haul-away fee. Certainly cheaper than the $400 for 2 years of TotalTech. Oh, and they installed it for free.

Free shipping no minimum while ending rewards for those without the credit card is not a bad trade. Not allowing you to bank points beyond $20 and auto-issue of certificates with expiry dates at that threshold made the rewards difficult to use. Rather than save for something you want they basically say use your RZ cert or lose it.

It works the same for Apple products. They advertise 2 years of AppleCare+ as long as you are a (paying) TotalTech member. So that is $400 for 2 years.

Geek Squad is the biggest joke ever. I went to my local BB for an item and they don't even have people to check you out. They want you to pay via their app.
