Good deal if you need pci-e 4 for laptop but for desktop, sn850x is $170 right now and it's faster/cheaper.

It's cheaper and it's good, but I wouldn't say it's faster.

I'm on the fence between this and the SN850X, but as the guy above me links to, most benchmarks show the P41 edges out against the WD, especially if you're not gaming. Thoughts? Thanks

Go with this one if you want the best. The WD is great too though

Showing as normal $260 price. Did you mean to link to the 2 TB P31?

Both of these very good drives *reportedly* run hot, so if you have a large laptop with excellent airflow/cooling, OK, but if not..... I might look at something else...

I put a P-31 in a laptop that was Gen 3, and it runs very cool unless I block the vents (ooops). I put a 980 Pro in another Gen 4 laptop and no issues yet because I haven't pushed it, but heat should always be a longevity concern, and not just due to potential throttling IMO...

FWIW, the SK Hynix P31 Gold (previous-gen drive from this manufacturer) failed a power loss data protection test, whereas the tested WD SSDs passed, so I'd be a bit more comfortable with the WD over the P41 Platinum, since the speeds are basically the same. I bought a WD SN850X with heatsink during Black Friday to go into my new build since my mobo didn't have a built-in SSD heatsink.

Go for the SK Hynix in this instance. I would recommend the WD over other choices except the P41. SK Hynix really hit it out of the park but the only outlaying question is what does their NAND look like at year 5 after wearing out. This doesn't matter for anyone in the consumer space unless they really care about having zero growth defects when rated life reaches 0.

I test NVMe drives for a living (enterprise).

A lot of places incorrectly state (Reddit for example) that the WD SN850x is using Toshiba or even SanDisk NAND. They are using KIOXIA NAND and there is quite a difference because BICS 5 is a joint-venture development between WD and KIOXIA back in 2019 as WD is one of the first infusions of business capital into the restructured spinoff (KIOXIA).

Which test? I read your reply as a generic statement and is it a spec violation or some other factor involved?

Are you aware of any other drives that use the same NAND as the P41? Asking to better understand the longevity of the drive, because you do bring up a good point

If you want best speed, get the intel p1600x optane 118gb for boot OS and other random access loads, and use these 2tb for large storage if you have extra m.2 slots.

It's not a spec violation since it's not part of any spec I'm aware of, but some manufacturers use techniques like journaling or backup capacitors to protect against data corruption in the event of sudden power loss mid-write. It's generally not easy to find out which drives employ these sorts of protections and which don't. Basically, an SSD enthusiast ran a test against a bunch of SSDs he had on hand to see which ones would have issues during a power loss event, and the Sabrent and SK Hynix drives failed. Here's a short article about it:
