And you have a greater chance of getting a legit drive vs. amazon who will sell shucked drives as "new/original packaging".

I likely won't buy another hard drive from amazon after my last couple dealings with this.

fffff**ck buying from WD directly. They have the absolutely most abysmal customer service where if you get stuck in their loop, you'll be calling for days, weeks months before any action is taken. Sometimes it works out, but the risk of what I mentioned happening is there, and it is NOT worth it. I swore off ever using their store ever again, and would urge others to do the same. Unless you are down with the idea of dealing with reps from Costa Rica/India that keep asking you to wait 2 days or an action that never happens, and thus you get stuck in a loop of nothing ever happening for months while spending hours on hold on phone, or hours re-explaining things in chat. Its a bonifide nightmare experience.

Hmmmm, regarding Amazon; My 14tb Plus [amazon.com] arrived in a dirty plain cardboard box with a shipping label affixed that had the drive inside sealed in an anti-static bag.

I didn't think nothing of it as I assumed WD sells NAS drives OEM but should I have got retail packaging? Drive was sold by Amazon.com Services LLC, Condition New for $209.99.

You got me worried man; any suggestion on how confirming that the drive is truly new? CrystalDiskInfo [crystalmark.info] had Power on Hours and most other stats at 100 when I initally checked which I assumed as normal and the drive appeared unused...

Thats how they ship the internal hard drives from WD as well. I think only the retail packaging is for the external hard drives.

My WD Red 8TB drive came in a WD branded retail box from B&H.
A loose antistatic bag in a plain box is not great.

The biggest difference is if you buy from someone else, later find out it was a shucked drive, they won't honor your warranty. Ask me how I know.

At least by buying it through WD, you are going to get a legit new/unopened drive if they sell it that way. CS, if bad, can at least warrant an escalation. Try doing that with Amazon though.

Depends on the case you use. I know Fractal has been pretty good about sending out drive carriers for their cases to support drives without the middle screw holes.

Do you have any experience with this? How do they hold up?

I've been looking to upgrade my NVR drives and they have some 16GB deals on Seagate Surveillance drives that look pretty solid.

It's not really a great deal considering it's Red Plus, and the price comes to $16/TB.
The best deal I got was 14TB Pro for $204 last year.

Not sure if they still have them, but this [archive.org] is the adapter in question. Basically fits into the two-hole mounts of the drive carrier, and extends out so you can use the four corner hole mounts on your drives. Part number SP-FD-HDDBRKT-001-WT.
