If you getting a big buddy, , it can drain 2 bottles in 2-3 hours. that's about $10 depending where you get bottles.

I use a thing like this https://www.amazon.com/DozyAnt-Un...ljaz10cnVl and refill my bottles outside for savings.

It's not for everyone, the safety patrol will be here any minute to wring their hands about people doing this and being unsafe. Housecat type guys might want to just buy the propane bottles at Target and have a frappe.
They do sell an adapter for the 20lb tanks.
Sams club has the big buddy with the fan, plus 5 foot hose to hook up to 20lb tank for $149. Better deal

Any of you guys buy one of those Chinese diesel heaters that have gotten popular lately. They're about the same price and I guess you can burn about any kind of oil in them including used motor oil etc.

I set one up recently. The main thing would be you have to vent the diesel heater outside. I put one in my garage and have liked it so far.

I like the Mr. Buddy heaters but I'd avoid Northern Tools at all costs. They royally farked over a bunch of us on a recent deal, only shipping partial orders (the batteries of a battery + inflator deal) at full cost and no notification, then only offering the ability to return the item for a refund as a resolution, and in some cases not even offering to pay return shipping. I ultimately had to do a chargeback with my credit card company, something I've never had to do before. I wasn't the only one.

Mine is the HCALORY 12V 5KW-8KW Diesel Air Heater (was $115 when I got it). They are pretty much all the same but I liked that form factor the best. I can start this via the remote it came with. I have it installed on a detached garage, so I can use the remove to start it 15 minutes or so before I go out to the garage.

The most important things to note are:

1. You will need something to vent it outside. I went with a piece called: AQXMIOE 22mm Straight Thru Hull Exhaust

2. You will need to figure out how you are going to get power. I went with a piece called: 12V Auxiliary Power Outlet AC to DC Converter, then you will also need a cigarette plug to wire it up to that power supply

Overall this works well and I like it a lot better than the propane. There is a fan that runs, and also you can hear the pump running, but not too loud overall.

I priced matched with Walmart to get it at the $112 price. I suggest others do the same if they want faster shipping.

Price matched the one at northern tools. They allowed it. I was going to buy from northern but checkout wasn't going through plus Walmart will deliver it today so I went with that option. Hopefully the Walmart one has a fan. If not I might just go with the sams deal.

Is that really powerful enough to heat a garage? Looks like it's sold for larger vehicles (e.g. RV or van).

Looking at the specs, 18kBTU ~ 5.3kW, so the unit you're suggesting and this one are comparable in terms of heating capacity; that said I have a big buddy and it's not really great for a 2 car garage. I'd have to leave it on full blast for a few hours just to take the edge off the cold.

Is it worth it to get the one with the fan?
The fan is more of a gimmick. Runs on batteries and it's too small to really move air. If I want to move air I use a portable USB fan and a power bank.

That is a loaded question. Obviously insulation is a big issue. It puts out heat, but keeping a space warm has a lot factors. I use it in a one stall garage for a golf simulator.

No, the fan runs on a/c power with power adapter included The batteries are for the ignitor of the unit

Then you got lucky with a stupid rep. They dont match them and the model number is not the same.

I have the fan model, I never use the fan. It doesn't add much functionality. The fan is too noisy for hunting, and too weak to push he very far. Instead of the heat going straight up, it goes forward a foot and then goes straight up.

As for the extension hose. I have one of those too. If you go that route, make sure you get a filter. I don't know if it is a pressure issue or a dirt issue, but my heater stops working on the just the hose. I have to disconnect and reconnect to get it to re-fire. When the filter is in place, I don't have those problems.

Great deal but northern tools isn't letting me check out online? Lame. May just buy it on Amazon although wanted it sooner. Amazon shipping seems to take a bit to get to me.
FWIW, I have Amazon Prime and the ship times have went to heck.

Five days is the new "quick" amazon shipping time. Plus, I have had two late deliveries this week alone.

I don't know what the heck has happened to Amazon Shipping, but there is no way that Prime is worth $179.
