I own several pieces of All Clad and Demeyere. Most of the cost difference is Chinese vs Belgium manufacturing costs. In my opinion, the Demeyere outperforms All Clad by a meaningful amount in pots 4.5 quarts and higher. Does it perform 3x better? Heck no. But if you like nice things and have the cash, you won't be disappointed. They are a joy to use.

Yep. It's not that this is a bargain-hunters dream, but if you were willing to pay for Demeyere, this set is a good deal compared to buying individual pieces at retail. Demeyere isn't just expensive -- it's also rarely discounted much.

Of course, if you're willing to pay for Demeyere, you probably also want to pick the specific pieces you want and not necessarily the 5 that come in this collection.

There was a time not that many years ago when All-Clad was never discounted and was even specifically excluded from every sale at major retailers. You couldn't get discounted All-Clad unless you drove to their annual seconds sale at the factory in the Midwest. But in recent years they relaxed those old price controls to boost sales. Maybe this Costco package is a sign that Demeyere will start allowing more discounting as well.

This. I have the Demeyere 12" fry pan and 3qt saucier. Performance is really nice compared to my other stainless cookware. Really even heating and solid construction, rivet-less design which is very nice, and everything about the feel of the pan, even how well the lids fit on the pots, just feels really well made.

I bought Kirkland stainless steel copper plated cookware in 2008 for $200. It works fine still for any type of cooking.

Durability/even heating. But yes different market segments like vehicles. Both will get you to the destination but how you get there is the difference.

Cool story. On an unrelated note, my 2008 Honda Civic is still running strong to this day,

Can't imagine getting those without a $80 sponge - hope there is a deal for it somewhere too.

Look, this is a 7-layer stainless steel cooking set from Belgium. Number one, it's manufacturing costs are going to be higher based on materials, construction, and where it's made.

Number two it's a product that actually has a lot of thought put into it from preserving the finish to how the handle feels in the hand to all sorts of engineering to ensure that the multiple layers of dissimilar metals are perfectly even and not prone to hotspots to the shape of the edge to ensure a more even pour, how the lids fit, all that.

Now is it WORTH all that extra? If you just need some decent cookware and you don't particular care about all the fanciness then of course not. If you just want a good car to go from A to B that's reliable, comfortable enough, and has all the features you need then why would you pick a Lexus LS over a Camry?

The other way to think about it is that this is one of those "buy it for life" type purchases that you can either:

A. Resale for a significant amount of money if you've kept it in good shape (because those who know will pay it)
B. Pass it down to someone else who will also be able to use it forever

Neither one of those things apply to a cheaper 3-ply Tramontina, Calphalon, or even All-Clad set. This is especially true for people who really derive pleasure from cooking. I will tell you that a car enthusiast will think nothing of spending $1000 on a set of wheels for a car. If you like watches $1000 is similarly not particular huge sum. People will also spend $1000 on a handbag, a pair of shoes, a rifle, a piece of furniture, a washing machine, etc. Most homeowners likely have more than $1000 worth of tools and equipment sitting around in the garage. Like maybe someone doesn't care about snagging a pair of Louboutin's that they might wear a few times a year but they WOULD like something that they use multiple times a day to be really, really nice. Like what's $1000 over 5 years? 10? 20?

My friends tell me how great a cook I am. Nope, it's just that this cookware (at least on induction) makes cooking a breeze. I've been trying to cook on my family's revereware over the holidays. Burning all the pans. Demeyere Atlantis is worth it, at least on induction. Have not tried it on non induction cooktop

Every piece of cookware will have trade-offs whether it is a $30 aluminum pan, Cusinart, Tramontina, All-Clad, Misen, Made-In, Demeyere etc.

You'll always be trading off between cost, durability, responsiveness, even heating, weight etc.

Demeyere Atlantis is built like a tank due to thicker walls = more thermal mass = more durable/warp resistant (especially on induction) = more even heating. Just like a tank, the additional mass is going to add more weight, cost more and it is not going to be as responsive as a pan with less mass.

Aluminum pan is like a scooter. Less mass = more responsive = less even heating = less cost = light weight = not as durable.

Cusinart, Tramontina, All-Clad D3/D5 all have similar mass so they will perform similar.

Misen/Demeyere Industry/Intense is supposedly thicker than All-Clad.

As such, there is no "best" pan; it depends on which criteria are more important. I personally have induction and since Cusinart/All-Clad warps over time (eg "not a forever pan") anyway, I see my options being Cusinart/Tramontina/Misen over All-Clad due to lower cost or go with Demeyere Atlantis for warp resistance.

I don't regret purchasing the Atlantis saucepans or the 9" and 12.5" Proline fry pans one bit. All-Clad is not comparable. Demeyere pieces are purpose-built. The highly polished finish with Silvanox surface purity treatment is truly stainless with remarkable food release. Rivet-less welded handles make clean up a breeze. The saucepans are heavy single ply with a sealed encapsulated bottom, exactly what you want. Mine are the now discontinued KitchenAid version with double insulated Thermo stainless lid. The Sur La Table Silver 7 is similar. The wide drip-less pan lip allows for water-less cooking with the lid. Yet the weight of this cookware means that it is not for everyone. Nor would I recommend buying Demeyere as a set. Proline fry pans have a very large cooking surface so the 24 cm 9" pan can replace an 11" in many cases. Check your cast iron oven lids for compatibility. The fully clad pans now have sealed edges.

edit: Sur Le Table has the 2.3 qt saucepan in the Atlantis7/Silver7 line with Thermo lid for $180. It is the one piece in this set I believe everyone will appreciate. Track for sales and coupons.

Be aware that the 11 fry pan lacks a helper handle which I deem necessary for the weight. The 9" or the 12.5 with helper handle work better for me. I've never used my 3.5 saucier and those have been widely discounted. Nor have I ever used my covered saute. L.C. oven over this oven for me. YMMV. For a small fry pan I get a lot of use from my Staub 24 cm c.i. enamel euro rounded design with removable hardwood handle. 23 years of use to be precise. Consider buying a small Demeyere pan from a retailer with 30 day free return before committing to a set. Whatever you buy don't forget proper care. Adding salt to a ss pan leads to pitting when undissolved slat crystals contact the hot pan bottom. Nothing more abrasive than a blue scrubbie or baking soda. No BKF harsh cleansers. Soak first for easy release with just a sponge. Steel utensils scratch. Protect when stacking. White mineral deposits are removed easily with vinegar water. Rinse with clear water afterwards.

Cheap tin compared to Demeyre. Also nobody cares.
