I mainly put that out there so to raise awareness that an rx 6800 and a rx 6800xt are two different cards. I got tripped up on that stuff some years ago. Most benchmark vids out there use the xt's and it's just easy to confuse the two.
This would be a great deal if it were an XT. Don't be confused the XT is the performer.
6800 is faster in just about everything except ray tracing and has twice the vram of 3070, so it's a lot more future proof.

What!!! Did Amazon have any issue taking it back?

They refunded my money no problem, but it was about two weeks after they received it back. They probably realized they screwed up when they checked the box size they sent was smaller than what this card could fit in.

I drove across state lines to pick up a 6800 at a MicroCenter instead.

This is wildly inaccurate. 6800 has performance just above the 6750 xt. A 6800 will perform lower, but marginally so, compared to a 2080 ti and then, higher up, a regular 3070. Then there's a bit of a jump to the performance level of a 3070 ti from there.

Honestly, it's a kind of a preference to the green or the red side. They're in the same neighborhood.
I'm not sure where you get your benchmarks but a 6800 = 3070 ti. The main difference is what resolution you're playing at. The 6800 has 16gb of vram and will perform much better with games at 2k and 4k. The 3070 ti has only 8gb and hitching will occur more at these resolutions. The second benefit is power consumption at 225w vs 300w while gaming so you're going to have less heat and fan noise. Another side note, 6700xt or 6750xt =3070.

If you need a card immediately and are in the sub-$550 price range; it's one of the better values available. But if it were me and I could wait a little bit I'd rather hold out for a sub $530 6800 XT. If I could wait longer I would wait and see how the 7700 XT and 7800 XT's are priced and what they have to offer and if increased competition at that level lowers the prices on other cards.

Good point. I'm in need of a minimum 3080 level performance (4k 60fps), When are the 7700xt / 7800xt supposed to come out?

I can also get a PNY XLR8 GeForce RTX 3070 for $450+tax. Would the 3070 ($450) or RX 6800 ($489) be better for my build? I already have a 12700K and TUF Z690 mobo. This build will mainly be for photo and video editing. I do plan to get Diablo 4 for some casual gaming though.
if its mainly video editing, best option would probably be 3070, the 6800 would do better for games, but at the moment nvenc is just stronger... av1 on the newer cards will essentially remove that lead in a year or two after software updates

probably won't get any info for a couple months, the soonest would probably be at GDC but its possible to have a formal announcement from both parties of the lower to mid range cards

amd prices aren't as cheap as previous gen nvidia 3000 series but they aren't being mined from as much either so used is still an interesting proposition

the fact that miners are able to sell to offset from how much they mined from actually puts nvidia in a much better situation cause of the yield now

amd still has a ways to go; i tried to replace my 3060ti with a 6700xt but the software was pretty but it was shortlived when i started to get more glitches and a frame drop

most annoying thing is every new game i put into ram had to load textures which killed fps; and .1% and 1% lowest was pretty bad; like -40 from dota 2 which i didn't have stuttering before

For $10 more you can get the PowerColor 6800. Not sure how big of a difference XFX and PowerColor are though.

6800xt has been sub 520~530 dollar since Nov of last year for nearly two month straight.
not sure why the price has been going higher, i certainly wouldn't think a 490 USD 6800 is a good value if you could wait a bit.

if anything, a 6700xt or 6650xt seem to be at a reasonable price at this moment.

Problem with the 6800 XT's is that they seem to have gone extinct. Every now and then a very teeny tiny amount of stock shows up for under $550 on Amazon or Newegg and is snatched up almost immediately. Ditto for the 6900 XT's; I haven't seen any sign of them being around anywhere.

This is still a great deal, the non XT is only 250 watts and can play everything at 1440p ultra and 4k high
As someone with a 6900XT who plays at 1440p I'd like to say that this is definitely not true.

Prices on last gen have gone higher because the new gen are higher. If you going spend $800 on a 6800xt, you might as well get the 7900xt for $900-1000.. If the 6800xt was priced at $550-650.. the 7900xt wouldn't move as well. Most people will pay the extra 100-200 for newer technology and AV1.

This is done on purpose by AMD and NVidia they artificially inflate the prices. It's not about the consumer it's about the share holders. They more $ they can squeeze out of the consumer the happier the share holders are.

You could get a last gen gaming card and get the Intel ARC for AV1. Drawback if that you have to have the space fro two GFX cards.

What part is not True?

I have a 6800xt and play at 1440p with graphics set high/ultra without issue. Even Cyberpunk 2077 runs good on ultra w/o RTX & FSR.. I don't watch my wattage so I can't tell you where I'm at with that.
