Costco's version includes $10 credit which for an additional TurboTax service like e-file of state return. (State e-file is $20.) If you e-file state, Costco price is essentially the same cost as the Amazon deal and Newegg is $5 more.

If you expect any sizable state refund, e-file is probably worth it to avoid the delay in paper return processing.

For the people asking if this will get any cheaper: Last year I was monitoring the prices, I don't recall them getting cheaper as deadline approached. They got marginally more expensive with time IIRC.

For the people asking if the online version goes on sale. I don't ever remember it ever being on sale, but Robinhood gave $10 off if you used their link with them last year.

Yeah that's a bit sketch. Not saying it necessarily was, but it's that exact situation you hear about all the time - some people always went to a preparer because they got more $$ back, not realizing the preparer was filing improperly, and that THEY are the ones liable for the illegal return because they signed it.

That said I can certainly see situations where the preparer/CPA might notice more deductions/credits you can take, although I will say Intuit does a lot of handholding, asking questions about stuff you've done in the year, and that's all geared toward saving you $$.

A few years ago, back when I first got out of college, I filled out TT for us (at the time no kids) and it came up with that I owed a bunch of $$ which was odd. So I filled out HR and TA as well, just for multiple sources (each will give you a refund/owe figure without paying for it), and HR actually came out more $$ than the other 2. Turned out that HR was incorrectly applying a penalty fee for whatever reason (basically if your income jumps year over year they don't penalize you for underpayment, or at least that's how it used to be).

HR Block deluxe plus state for $20 at Newegg. Why would anyone pay $40 for TT software that does the exact same thing. Just my opinion.

Honestly used TurboTax for 7-9 years, classic story of starting by qualifying for free filing, then as the years went on they wanted more and more money.

Until I went to a highly recommended CPA for $150 even though I only had a 1099, student loans & healthcare tax info. But my federal return difference was more than enough to offset paying a professional.

(Plus this year I'll have some independent contractor stuff I knew I'd have last year, and at some point Crypto that needs to be dealt with, so I wanted to get familiar with this guy early.)

I've used them both over the years. In the past, TurboTax had slightly better guidance and a better interface.

Do you know if Costco download version is good for both PC and Mac? Or it will limit the installation to one OS? In the past, only the CD version support both OS out of the box. Thanks.
The Costco product description is "PC/Mac". This year the Amazon download version came with both PC and Mac installation files. (Both came in the zip file provided.) It appears that the license is for up to 5 PCs. I would assume but can't confirm that the Costco version would be the same. The key difference is that Amazon offered a $10 Amazon gift card and Costco includes a $10 TurboTax credit.

If you need to efile your state tax, Costco is still the better deal as it gives you $10 credits to use towards the efile charge $25 looks like.

That doesn't make any sense unless he's helping you deduct things you aren't entitled to

You owe what you owe, having a cpa vs tax software won't change that unless there's some significant deduction you aren't aware of, which is uncommon for simple returns

He gave me the standard deduction, it's more likely I was missing something I didn't realize I qualified for within TurboTax as I made sure to play it super safe terrified of an audit. Even though I know they don't typically go after people in my bracket.

It wasn't some massive difference just a minor bump. Could have also just been some change in federal tax code I didn't know about 🤷

Is the Home and Business version covers
1. W2
2. Home
3. Stocks and Bonds?
It will definitely cover all that. But, you can cover all that with just the Deluxe version. I have for years now, previously, I bought Premier because I thought I needed it. Deluxe handles most situations and you won't need the upscale version.

Is the PC version usually cheaper than the online?
Is there any benefit for doing the online instead, aside from the cloud stuff?

I know the PC version can do multiple tax filings, but I only need one filing. I used the PC version in the past and have all the past filings saved on my Google Drive.
The online version is a little different. Many of the features that you get with the PC/Mac version of Deluxe, are only in the online Premier version. So, unless you're getting that version free from Fidelity or some other deal, you're better off with the PC/Mac version so you aren't forced into upgrading to Premier online (I forget what triggered the request by the online version to upgrade, but it was either entering a stock sale or itemizing deductions, something you can do in the Deluxe PC/Mac version).
