I'm not sure I'd use the term audiophile but I definitely dabble, and i would not "snub my nose" at this. Used appropriately and with proper expectations this could add much needed low end to your living room movie night. Very easy to get $50 worth of "utility" out of something like this if you treat it with care, in my opinion.

I bought one directly from monoprice's website. $53 shipped to my door with tax. I'm not exactly sure where I'll use it yet, either with my PC or maybe in the garage. I figured for the price it is worth it. I already own a 12" from monoprice and that's a decent sub considering the price.

Bought this last time same sale price to pair with my old 2ch soundbar. Not an audiophile but the subwoofer did make a big upgrade on the soundbar for watching movies. It's worthy the price IMO.

Garage will probably give the sub a big dirty boost with lack of insulation, carpet, low ceiling, no hallways, etc.
