Tesla has dropped the base price of the Tesla Model Y from $65,990 down to $52,990. This price reduction means the Model Y now qualifies for the $7,500 Federal Tax Credit (details here).

Thanks to Community Member MurraytheDemonSkull for finding this deal.

Additionally, the base prices of all Tesla vehicles have been reduced. The base Model 3 is now $43,990, which is $3,000 lower than before. The Model 3 Performance is now $53,990, which is $9,000 lower than before, and now qualifies for the tax credit.

Editor's Notes

Written by RazorConcepts
  • This is $13,000 lower (19% savings) than the previous base price.
  • Factoring in the tax credit, the price of the Model Y today is $20,000 less than one purchased in December 2022.
  • To qualify for the federal tax credit, one must not exceed the following adjusted gross income limits:
    • $300,000 for married couples filing jointly
    • $225,000 for heads of households
    • $150,000 for all other filers
  • The tax credit is not refundable, which means one must have federal tax due to take advantage of it. If the tax due is less than the credit amount, one can only claim the credit up to the amount of the tax due.

If anyone is interested in hard numbers to figure out how much less expensive it is now compared to Tesla's best deal of 2022 - $7,500 discount with 10,000 free Supercharger miles - I bought a Tesla Model Y Long Range 7-Seater with white interior in late December 2022.

Excluding taxes and fees, I paid $63,940. It's now $59,630, which is $4,310 less, and it is eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. That means if I didn't buy it in December and bought it today, I would have saved $11,810 + sales tax, so a bit over $12,000 in savings I missed. (I got 10,000 Supercharger miles, which is worth somewhere between $500 and $1,000.) With taxes and fees, I paid $71,578.55 in total.

For those who do order, I recommend this Tesla Prep guide [glideapp.io] to check for build quality issues on delivery day.

I hope this helps,

Tesla plans to add a new radar product to its vehicles in mid-January, according to documents posted with the Federal Communications Commission.

The disclosure, which was first reported by Electrek, comes as the company faces scrutiny over the safety and capabilities of its standard advanced driver assistance system known as Autopilot and the $15,000 optional upgraded product branded as "Full Self-Driving." Tesla FSD beta software offers some automated driving features but is not a self-driving system.

The luxury EV-maker has long claimed it could reach full autonomy through a "vision only" approach that shuns other sensors like lidar and radar in favor of cameras and a deep neural network that quickly processes a vehicle's surroundings and responds in real time. Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously promised to "solve" full self-driving by the end of this year (he's also promised Tesla would get there every year for roughly nine years now). He has recently admitted the problem will take longer to solve.

And perhaps, as every other autonomous vehicle technologist says, it's not actually achievable yet through cameras alone.

The company began removing radar from its vehicles last May. In October, Tesla removed its 12 ultrasonic sensors from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for North America, Europe, the Middle East and Taiwan. Ultrasonic sensors measure distance via ultrasonic waves and are used as proximity sensors to support anti-collision safety systems, particularly in parking use cases.

Now it appears radar is back. It's not yet clear which models will get the new radar. The type of radar Tesla intends to market next year is of a frequency that's allocated by the FCC for ADAS use cases, according to Ram Machness, chief business officer at Arbe Robotics, which produces ultra-high-resolution 4D imaging radar.

Tesla had originally filed with the FCC to use the new radar — which is described in filings as "76-77 GHz Automotive Radar" — in its vehicles back in June.

"From the frequency of operation (76-77GHz) as well as the mechanical design of the sensor from Tesla's FCC filing, it appears that this radar would be utilized in ADAS applications," Steven Hong, VP and general manager of radar technology at semiconductor company Ambarella, told TechCrunch.

He noted that while the performance of this "edge" radar sensor will be limited, it's a positive development that Tesla is looking to add radar to its perception stack for safety-critical, robust performance.

Earlier this year, the FCC had granted a confidential treatment to Tesla in order to keep the details of the new radar under wraps. Late last month, Tesla applied to extend that confidentiality treatment another 60 days from its date of expiration, which is December 7.

i hope this answers your question

edit: ACTUAL LINK TO DEAL https://www.tesla.com/modely/design (SD's link goes to existing inventory page)
Wayback Machine if anyone wants to do some research: https://web.archive.org/web/20220...ely/design

I'll throw out some notable 'milestones' , focusing only on the Model Y LR base model:

* Feb 2021 - $49,000 - Roughly the lowest price for the Y LR (not including the SR @ $42k)
From this point forward, Tesla started increasing the price about $1-2 every month or so, until it peaked out at $66,000. Ex:
* May 2021 - $51,000
* July 2021 - $53,000, etc...
* Feb 2022 - $59,000, etc...
* July 2022 - $66,000 <-- peak
* Dec 1 2022 - $66,000 (-$3750 credit/refund)
* Dec 15 2022 - $66,000 (-$7500 credit/refund)
* Jan 1 2023 - $66,000 back to peak (-$7500 fed tax credit only on 7-seater)
* Jan 13 2023 - $53,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Jan 23 2023 - $53,500 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Feb 4 2023 - $55,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on all models)

Tesla prices are always all over the place, my 2018 first order model 3 was $51,000, then prices went down and tech packages were upgraded, then Covid hit and prices were ridiculous, this is getting back to where prices used to be.
Agree. I got my Model 3 Performance Stealth(just doesn't have Carbon Fiber Spoiler + 20" inch wheels, red calipers and aluminum pedals) for $50k in summer of 2019.

They were throwing 19" upgraded Wheels/White interior for free or Free SC for 1yr.

Most people who can't afford the car aren't likely to be paying taxes, especially in amounts greater than the cost of the public services they or their children consume, to begin with.
Lol. Our household income is better than most, and I can't afford a 50k car if I want to make house payments, pay bills and save for retirement. $1,000/month for car costs is crazy.

There are plenty of people who have convinced themselves they can afford this car, but in reality, they can't.

Any issue if people cancel their order and order at the the new price?
Most of the times if the car is not delivered, Tesla will adjust to new lower pricing near or on delivery date.

If not, just place new order or call them and amend. There is plenty of inventory.

What a great bargain. Tesla prices are only going lower along with the stock price. From what I have heard their dealer support/repairs for customers is terrible. All companies owned by Musk tend to have poor customer service so it seems.
What can Elon do when other car makers keep putting out EVs with better features every year while Tesla still selling the same models as 3 years ago. I see another price reduction from Elon soon.

Any unused tax credit may be carried forward to the following year.
Not true…

From IRS website " The credit is nonrefundable, so you can't get back more on the credit than you owe in taxes. You can't apply any excess credit to future tax years."

Everything about dealing with Tesla is awful. From day 1 delivery to the service appointments I've had over the 3+ years I've owned it.
Love my M3 tho.
I have heard this from almost every Tesla owner who will admit it. Many are cheerleaders for MUsk. I have heard worse. My saying is dont love anything that doesnt love you back. I wonder if sales dropped when the stock dropped because tons of the bros during the pandemic stated they would buy 100K cars with all the profits they were making on the stock.

I hope with Tesla's price cut other EVs will come down in price and hopefully sell under MSRP. I was looking at Bolt EUV but dealer add on +ADM is making me wait.
The Bolt is small but it works for me, it will be my daily work driver (30 miles daily), for road trips I have a minivan.
I would get a Tesla but the price is still too high for me and no Android Auto/Car Play (I know there is a work around) , but if the Tesla's price drops more in the next few months, I'll have to rethink it.

I work in the auto industry. ICE cars are going nowhere. EVs and the infrastructure needed to support mass adaptation is still in its infancy.

OEMs are simply pausing development of ICE simply because they been perfected and there are no new upcoming emission standards.

The real reason why all western car companies are jumping into EVs is for one reason only: China. The CCP made it clear their strategic plan is to be first to develop cheap EVs, then flood the global market to become powerhouse. So it has nothing do to with actual demand for EV in US, Europe etc.

Half the country still get piss pops mileage out of EVs when it's less than 30*F.
This.

Half the country lives in cold weather environments for 3-4 months a year and the grids across the country can barely handle the current load as is. Add in the lack of infrastructure, the time it takes to charge an EV + that limited infrastructure, and the fact that there is a genuine challenge for EV charging in urban areas where people rent and don't own a home where they can install a plug charging system, and EV in a decade is simply not realistic.

I'm not anti-EV in any way, nor am I pro-ICE. The facts and reality are what they are with respect to both. Fossil fuels pose pros and cons, as do EVs. We're going to have a mix of both for a long, long time imo.

re: your modified adjusted gross income (AGI) may not exceed:

$300,000 for married couples filing jointly
$225,000 for heads of households
$150,000 for all other filers

If I buy now, I'll only get the $7500 tax credit if my AGI for 2023 (which I won't know until next year) is below these. Right?

For anyone who can afford this car, does anyone actually qualify for fed tax credit. Income limits are so low...

I've always wanted an electric car, but since I don't have a garage... Kind of impossible. I don't expect to have a garage anytime soon.

Tesla is struggling to sell these. The quality issues are giving them trouble.

I think if you wait the prices will continue to drop, especially on lightly used vehicles.

I'm on my second Bolt and the car has served me very well.
With current $7500 rebate on Bolt, that's a no Brainer if someone wants to get an EV.
