Tesla has dropped the base price of the Tesla Model Y from $65,990 down to $52,990. This price reduction means the Model Y now qualifies for the $7,500 Federal Tax Credit (details here).

Thanks to Community Member MurraytheDemonSkull for finding this deal.

Additionally, the base prices of all Tesla vehicles have been reduced. The base Model 3 is now $43,990, which is $3,000 lower than before. The Model 3 Performance is now $53,990, which is $9,000 lower than before, and now qualifies for the tax credit.

Editor's Notes

Written by RazorConcepts
  • This is $13,000 lower (19% savings) than the previous base price.
  • Factoring in the tax credit, the price of the Model Y today is $20,000 less than one purchased in December 2022.
  • To qualify for the federal tax credit, one must not exceed the following adjusted gross income limits:
    • $300,000 for married couples filing jointly
    • $225,000 for heads of households
    • $150,000 for all other filers
  • The tax credit is not refundable, which means one must have federal tax due to take advantage of it. If the tax due is less than the credit amount, one can only claim the credit up to the amount of the tax due.

If anyone is interested in hard numbers to figure out how much less expensive it is now compared to Tesla's best deal of 2022 - $7,500 discount with 10,000 free Supercharger miles - I bought a Tesla Model Y Long Range 7-Seater with white interior in late December 2022.

Excluding taxes and fees, I paid $63,940. It's now $59,630, which is $4,310 less, and it is eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. That means if I didn't buy it in December and bought it today, I would have saved $11,810 + sales tax, so a bit over $12,000 in savings I missed. (I got 10,000 Supercharger miles, which is worth somewhere between $500 and $1,000.) With taxes and fees, I paid $71,578.55 in total.

For those who do order, I recommend this Tesla Prep guide [glideapp.io] to check for build quality issues on delivery day.

I hope this helps,

Tesla plans to add a new radar product to its vehicles in mid-January, according to documents posted with the Federal Communications Commission.

The disclosure, which was first reported by Electrek, comes as the company faces scrutiny over the safety and capabilities of its standard advanced driver assistance system known as Autopilot and the $15,000 optional upgraded product branded as "Full Self-Driving." Tesla FSD beta software offers some automated driving features but is not a self-driving system.

The luxury EV-maker has long claimed it could reach full autonomy through a "vision only" approach that shuns other sensors like lidar and radar in favor of cameras and a deep neural network that quickly processes a vehicle's surroundings and responds in real time. Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously promised to "solve" full self-driving by the end of this year (he's also promised Tesla would get there every year for roughly nine years now). He has recently admitted the problem will take longer to solve.

And perhaps, as every other autonomous vehicle technologist says, it's not actually achievable yet through cameras alone.

The company began removing radar from its vehicles last May. In October, Tesla removed its 12 ultrasonic sensors from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for North America, Europe, the Middle East and Taiwan. Ultrasonic sensors measure distance via ultrasonic waves and are used as proximity sensors to support anti-collision safety systems, particularly in parking use cases.

Now it appears radar is back. It's not yet clear which models will get the new radar. The type of radar Tesla intends to market next year is of a frequency that's allocated by the FCC for ADAS use cases, according to Ram Machness, chief business officer at Arbe Robotics, which produces ultra-high-resolution 4D imaging radar.

Tesla had originally filed with the FCC to use the new radar — which is described in filings as "76-77 GHz Automotive Radar" — in its vehicles back in June.

"From the frequency of operation (76-77GHz) as well as the mechanical design of the sensor from Tesla's FCC filing, it appears that this radar would be utilized in ADAS applications," Steven Hong, VP and general manager of radar technology at semiconductor company Ambarella, told TechCrunch.

He noted that while the performance of this "edge" radar sensor will be limited, it's a positive development that Tesla is looking to add radar to its perception stack for safety-critical, robust performance.

Earlier this year, the FCC had granted a confidential treatment to Tesla in order to keep the details of the new radar under wraps. Late last month, Tesla applied to extend that confidentiality treatment another 60 days from its date of expiration, which is December 7.

i hope this answers your question

edit: ACTUAL LINK TO DEAL https://www.tesla.com/modely/design (SD's link goes to existing inventory page)
Wayback Machine if anyone wants to do some research: https://web.archive.org/web/20220...ely/design

I'll throw out some notable 'milestones' , focusing only on the Model Y LR base model:

* Feb 2021 - $49,000 - Roughly the lowest price for the Y LR (not including the SR @ $42k)
From this point forward, Tesla started increasing the price about $1-2 every month or so, until it peaked out at $66,000. Ex:
* May 2021 - $51,000
* July 2021 - $53,000, etc...
* Feb 2022 - $59,000, etc...
* July 2022 - $66,000 <-- peak
* Dec 1 2022 - $66,000 (-$3750 credit/refund)
* Dec 15 2022 - $66,000 (-$7500 credit/refund)
* Jan 1 2023 - $66,000 back to peak (-$7500 fed tax credit only on 7-seater)
* Jan 13 2023 - $53,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Jan 23 2023 - $53,500 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Feb 4 2023 - $55,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on all models)

Nonsense. I paid less than $25K including all taxes and fees back in 2018 for a new Honda Insight 3rd gen. I can fill up with 500 miles of range in less than 5 minutes at any of tens of thousands of gas stations... and it has top safety ratings.
that's in a complete different class, 1.5L engine and tiny...That's not really comparable is it?

Tesla really screwed their 2022 customers with what was in their control. Reinstated $7500 credit is not their fault but their freewheeling business decisions are kinda ridiculous.
how? nobody forced u to buy anything.. do ice automaker give recent buyers refund when they roll out promotions like cash back and rebate 1-3 weeks after you buy your car?

What you're saying is wrong. Whether you withhold $0 or $100,000 from payroll has no bearing on whether you can get the credit or not.
Argh, I owe you and Knightshade and other on this forum an apology. I re read the IRS document and you are right I completely misunderstood the definition of money is "owed".

To anyone who read my prior withholding comments, I am an idiot. Please disgegard and follow Knightshade comments.

Sorry 😞

AP is included with the price of the car.

FSD is an add-on that is software only and can be purchased with the car, or after, no difference (and buying "with" the car does not change tax credit eligibility)
Thanks for the clarification. What's the process to add FSD may be a year or two after car delivery?

My next car might be all electric, and I will do my research when it comes time to buy based on what's available on the market at the time... but hybrids are great stepping stones to all-electric.
Honda Insight gang. I have a 2011 2nd gen. The one that's weird looking but not quite as weird looking as gen 1. I don't drive a whole lot -- I still only have about 85k miles on it -- but I've had no trouble at all with it besides 1 repair to the battery cooling system a few years ago, which cost about $500. Other than that, only routine maintenance. It's been great.

Because fans are willing to overlook all the issues for the novelty of having a car that goes fast in a straight line and there wasn't much EV competition. I've had 2 and combined both were in for service more than the other dozens of cars I've owned COMBINED. Both cars had to have service appointments scheduled the day I bought them because of issues that were found upon delivery. One completely failed on a road trip with less than 10,000 miles on it and stranded me for 2 days. If you think they're great that's fine… but from my experience they are terrible and people are willing to overlook a lot just because of the novelty right now.

Hybrids are literally the worst of both worlds because you pay for a mediocre version of two drivetrains. You don't get the safety benefits of an electric car (low center of gravity with large battery pack, front crumple zone, still gotta pay for gas maintenance).
with 60 mpg whats the problem i fail to understand? all sedans are safer than SUVs, no idea why is EVs more safer? May be you think like a bad driver or bad past experiences. My honda accord itself drives 500 miles per tank, and maintenance cost is like $100 per year, so hybrids are lot better than EVs anyday as of today.

This is a silly calculation
Oh really? How much is it to supercharge during peak hours in your area?

Just want to throw this out there since so many people are asking about what happens to the federal credit after End of March 2023. IRS will most likely refine battery requirements (they must be made in USA) therefore it looks like the Model 3 SR (RWD) will be the only model affected. This will obviously rule out a lot of non-tesla competition so as is with everything, YMMV, IRS may not do this.
