Deal Details
Tesla has dropped the base price of the Tesla Model Y from $65,990 down to $52,990. This price reduction means the Model Y now qualifies for the $7,500 Federal Tax Credit (details here).

Thanks to Community Member MurraytheDemonSkull for finding this deal.

Additionally, the base prices of all Tesla vehicles have been reduced. The base Model 3 is now $43,990, which is $3,000 lower than before. The Model 3 Performance is now $53,990, which is $9,000 lower than before, and now qualifies for the tax credit.

Editor's Notes

Written by RazorConcepts
  • This is $13,000 lower (19% savings) than the previous base price.
  • Factoring in the tax credit, the price of the Model Y today is $20,000 less than one purchased in December 2022.
  • To qualify for the federal tax credit, one must not exceed the following adjusted gross income limits:
    • $300,000 for married couples filing jointly
    • $225,000 for heads of households
    • $150,000 for all other filers
  • The tax credit is not refundable, which means one must have federal tax due to take advantage of it. If the tax due is less than the credit amount, one can only claim the credit up to the amount of the tax due.
  • Refer to the forum thread for additional deal discussion.

If anyone is interested in hard numbers to figure out how much less expensive it is now compared to Tesla's best deal of 2022 - $7,500 discount with 10,000 free Supercharger miles - I bought a Tesla Model Y Long Range 7-Seater with white interior in late December 2022.

Excluding taxes and fees, I paid $63,940. It's now $59,630, which is $4,310 less, and it is eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. That means if I didn't buy it in December and bought it today, I would have saved $11,810 + sales tax, so a bit over $12,000 in savings I missed. (I got 10,000 Supercharger miles, which is worth somewhere between $500 and $1,000.) With taxes and fees, I paid $71,578.55 in total.

For those who do order, I recommend this Tesla Prep guide [glideapp.io] to check for build quality issues on delivery day.

I hope this helps,

Tesla plans to add a new radar product to its vehicles in mid-January, according to documents posted with the Federal Communications Commission.

The disclosure, which was first reported by Electrek, comes as the company faces scrutiny over the safety and capabilities of its standard advanced driver assistance system known as Autopilot and the $15,000 optional upgraded product branded as "Full Self-Driving." Tesla FSD beta software offers some automated driving features but is not a self-driving system.

The luxury EV-maker has long claimed it could reach full autonomy through a "vision only" approach that shuns other sensors like lidar and radar in favor of cameras and a deep neural network that quickly processes a vehicle's surroundings and responds in real time. Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously promised to "solve" full self-driving by the end of this year (he's also promised Tesla would get there every year for roughly nine years now). He has recently admitted the problem will take longer to solve.

And perhaps, as every other autonomous vehicle technologist says, it's not actually achievable yet through cameras alone.

The company began removing radar from its vehicles last May. In October, Tesla removed its 12 ultrasonic sensors from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for North America, Europe, the Middle East and Taiwan. Ultrasonic sensors measure distance via ultrasonic waves and are used as proximity sensors to support anti-collision safety systems, particularly in parking use cases.

Now it appears radar is back. It's not yet clear which models will get the new radar. The type of radar Tesla intends to market next year is of a frequency that's allocated by the FCC for ADAS use cases, according to Ram Machness, chief business officer at Arbe Robotics, which produces ultra-high-resolution 4D imaging radar.

Tesla had originally filed with the FCC to use the new radar — which is described in filings as "76-77 GHz Automotive Radar" — in its vehicles back in June.

"From the frequency of operation (76-77GHz) as well as the mechanical design of the sensor from Tesla's FCC filing, it appears that this radar would be utilized in ADAS applications," Steven Hong, VP and general manager of radar technology at semiconductor company Ambarella, told TechCrunch.

He noted that while the performance of this "edge" radar sensor will be limited, it's a positive development that Tesla is looking to add radar to its perception stack for safety-critical, robust performance.

Earlier this year, the FCC had granted a confidential treatment to Tesla in order to keep the details of the new radar under wraps. Late last month, Tesla applied to extend that confidentiality treatment another 60 days from its date of expiration, which is December 7.

i hope this answers your question

edit: ACTUAL LINK TO DEAL https://www.tesla.com/modely/design (SD's link goes to existing inventory page)
Wayback Machine if anyone wants to do some research: https://web.archive.org/web/20220...ely/design

I'll throw out some notable 'milestones' , focusing only on the Model Y LR base model:

* Feb 2021 - $49,000 - Roughly the lowest price for the Y LR (not including the SR @ $42k)
From this point forward, Tesla started increasing the price about $1-2 every month or so, until it peaked out at $66,000. Ex:
* May 2021 - $51,000
* July 2021 - $53,000, etc...
* Feb 2022 - $59,000, etc...
* July 2022 - $66,000 <-- peak
* Dec 1 2022 - $66,000 (-$3750 credit/refund)
* Dec 15 2022 - $66,000 (-$7500 credit/refund)
* Jan 1 2023 - $66,000 back to peak (-$7500 fed tax credit only on 7-seater)
* Jan 13 2023 - $53,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Jan 23 2023 - $53,500 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Feb 4 2023 - $55,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on all models)

Hahaha, you can feel the ripples of insecurity wafting off the smartphone screen. A double income household at $500k in tech or (higher) finance (not a teller at a bank mind you) is not at all exceptional if you live in SF, NYC, Seattle or LA. Housing costs and taxes in these locations are higher, however, destination vacations often cost the same no matter where you live. It's always made more sense to me to spend more on travel than future landfill items.
Just because a person makes over 500k a year doesn't mean they are smart with money. Look at SBF, Caroline and Gary perfect example. LMAO

Federal Tax Credit limit (AGI) is definitely low for most Bay Area folks. Fed must take into consideration the cost of living index as well.

Can anyone tell me how can the price of Model Y be below 55k. I am based on Seattle and the minimum price for Model Y is $55,990.

$52,990 is the base price, no options, of the LR AWD 5 seat Model Y at tesla.com

Where are you seeing $55,990? are you adding options? (55.990 is the price if add metallic red paint and a trailer hitch for example)

Or are you counting tax/destination fees, which are not used in figuring the 55k tax credit cap?

Will Tesla change the price again come March? I don't qualify for the tax credit due to income and only concerned about getting the lowered price. I'm thinking I can just place a custom order by March to lock in the price and have it delivered whenever.

If you earn too much to qualify for the credit you could look to lease-- where you WOULD qualify (well, the leasing company would- and if it's a decent leasing company they pass that savings on to you)

Let me say that those that don't own an EV but are claiming the numerous options there are that is as capable as a Tesla have never experienced one themselves. Charging is a MAJOR factor in owning a Tesla. I've had 4 friends that either had the volt, the bolt, or the leaf and ended up with a model 3. They've simply come to the realization that it's way nicer to charge for 15 mins nearly anywhere with population then rush finding an EVGO or chargepoint and still have to wait 2 hours to reach the next stop. So yes, lucid and Id.4 are nice but practically speaking you'll grow tired of it's charging limitations over time
Current Leaf owner. Only use it as a daily driver for city driving and hence specifically got one with lower range (also about 8k less than the higher range). I only charge at home. So much savings that it is unbelievable. I got it after rebate for about 23k plus taxes vs the 50k + taxes of Model 3. So for daily commute of 15-25 miles 1 way plus occasional extra trips of grocery, classes and other stuff spending an extra 25k because I can charge it conveniently is not worth it. Primary reason I am on slickdeals is because I value the extra 25k more than the occasional use of the extra range or charge convenience.

Long story short- I am ecstatic about my purchase and the amount of savings I do driving about 1800 miles per month in the city.

The $55k cap is the MSRP only and excludes destination charge and any fees. It does include any options.

I never said I had a Cali DMV, I drive there with a out of state DL and plates TAX free and can use it in Cali as long as I see fit. Not pay one cent in EV car sales tax to cali and stay in my home in Cali. How does that sound?
Sounds good. Until you either get audited, or you get into a collision (hope it doesn't happen) where the insurance company is looking for a way to avoid payout. Very easy for them to prove your true residence - neighbor statements, utility bills, financial transactions, etc.

If you're making under $150k and buying a $50K car, you're not very responsible with your money. This tax credit seems to encourage people who can't afford this to splurge because yolo. What a silly plan.

I thought about it for a bit, and decided that given the trajectory the company might not be there in a few years to provide service and support. No thanks.

Better to wait a bit until the other electric car companies lower their prices. Tesla might be in for another price drop, and we've now seen that they'll take a cut off the top without addressing people who just bought.

I saw the 52,990 price this morning, now the lowest I see is 55,990. Don't know if location matters, but zip is 77459 (Houston)

I'm seeing it now again on a different page. Odd

I've taken numerous road trips in my 2018 Model 3 Performance. I wouldn't try it in any other brand of EV because the other charging networks are too unreliable and sparse, but in the Tesla it's simple. Put in the final destination, and it tells you where to stop and for how long. Most stops are in the 15-20 minute range, which is about how long it takes to get out of the car and walk to the nearby convenience store or restaurant, etc. Use the bathroom, pick up some food, and the car is ready to go again. And no need to babysit it like you would a gas vehicle, standing there watching the pump for a few minutes before you then go inside to pee/shop anyway. It's mostly been a non-issue. Combined with AutoPilot, road trips are a breeze.
Same, roadtrips are what I'll miss most about my Model 3. From DFW, I made trips to Denver, to Flagstaff, AZ, and even to Big Bend National Park where there are no superchargers around.

Just need to do a lil more planning than an ICE vehicle, but the smooth ride and autopilot features make it the perfect road trip car.
