Tesla has dropped the base price of the Tesla Model Y from $65,990 down to $52,990. This price reduction means the Model Y now qualifies for the $7,500 Federal Tax Credit (details here).

Thanks to Community Member MurraytheDemonSkull for finding this deal.

Additionally, the base prices of all Tesla vehicles have been reduced. The base Model 3 is now $43,990, which is $3,000 lower than before. The Model 3 Performance is now $53,990, which is $9,000 lower than before, and now qualifies for the tax credit.

Editor's Notes

Written by RazorConcepts
  • This is $13,000 lower (19% savings) than the previous base price.
  • Factoring in the tax credit, the price of the Model Y today is $20,000 less than one purchased in December 2022.
  • To qualify for the federal tax credit, one must not exceed the following adjusted gross income limits:
    • $300,000 for married couples filing jointly
    • $225,000 for heads of households
    • $150,000 for all other filers
  • The tax credit is not refundable, which means one must have federal tax due to take advantage of it. If the tax due is less than the credit amount, one can only claim the credit up to the amount of the tax due.
  • Refer to the forum thread for additional deal discussion.

If anyone is interested in hard numbers to figure out how much less expensive it is now compared to Tesla's best deal of 2022 - $7,500 discount with 10,000 free Supercharger miles - I bought a Tesla Model Y Long Range 7-Seater with white interior in late December 2022.

Excluding taxes and fees, I paid $63,940. It's now $59,630, which is $4,310 less, and it is eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. That means if I didn't buy it in December and bought it today, I would have saved $11,810 + sales tax, so a bit over $12,000 in savings I missed. (I got 10,000 Supercharger miles, which is worth somewhere between $500 and $1,000.) With taxes and fees, I paid $71,578.55 in total.

For those who do order, I recommend this Tesla Prep guide [glideapp.io] to check for build quality issues on delivery day.

I hope this helps,

Tesla plans to add a new radar product to its vehicles in mid-January, according to documents posted with the Federal Communications Commission.

The disclosure, which was first reported by Electrek, comes as the company faces scrutiny over the safety and capabilities of its standard advanced driver assistance system known as Autopilot and the $15,000 optional upgraded product branded as "Full Self-Driving." Tesla FSD beta software offers some automated driving features but is not a self-driving system.

The luxury EV-maker has long claimed it could reach full autonomy through a "vision only" approach that shuns other sensors like lidar and radar in favor of cameras and a deep neural network that quickly processes a vehicle's surroundings and responds in real time. Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously promised to "solve" full self-driving by the end of this year (he's also promised Tesla would get there every year for roughly nine years now). He has recently admitted the problem will take longer to solve.

And perhaps, as every other autonomous vehicle technologist says, it's not actually achievable yet through cameras alone.

The company began removing radar from its vehicles last May. In October, Tesla removed its 12 ultrasonic sensors from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for North America, Europe, the Middle East and Taiwan. Ultrasonic sensors measure distance via ultrasonic waves and are used as proximity sensors to support anti-collision safety systems, particularly in parking use cases.

Now it appears radar is back. It's not yet clear which models will get the new radar. The type of radar Tesla intends to market next year is of a frequency that's allocated by the FCC for ADAS use cases, according to Ram Machness, chief business officer at Arbe Robotics, which produces ultra-high-resolution 4D imaging radar.

Tesla had originally filed with the FCC to use the new radar — which is described in filings as "76-77 GHz Automotive Radar" — in its vehicles back in June.

"From the frequency of operation (76-77GHz) as well as the mechanical design of the sensor from Tesla's FCC filing, it appears that this radar would be utilized in ADAS applications," Steven Hong, VP and general manager of radar technology at semiconductor company Ambarella, told TechCrunch.

He noted that while the performance of this "edge" radar sensor will be limited, it's a positive development that Tesla is looking to add radar to its perception stack for safety-critical, robust performance.

Earlier this year, the FCC had granted a confidential treatment to Tesla in order to keep the details of the new radar under wraps. Late last month, Tesla applied to extend that confidentiality treatment another 60 days from its date of expiration, which is December 7.

i hope this answers your question

edit: ACTUAL LINK TO DEAL https://www.tesla.com/modely/design (SD's link goes to existing inventory page)
Wayback Machine if anyone wants to do some research: https://web.archive.org/web/20220...ely/design

I'll throw out some notable 'milestones' , focusing only on the Model Y LR base model:

* Feb 2021 - $49,000 - Roughly the lowest price for the Y LR (not including the SR @ $42k)
From this point forward, Tesla started increasing the price about $1-2 every month or so, until it peaked out at $66,000. Ex:
* May 2021 - $51,000
* July 2021 - $53,000, etc...
* Feb 2022 - $59,000, etc...
* July 2022 - $66,000 <-- peak
* Dec 1 2022 - $66,000 (-$3750 credit/refund)
* Dec 15 2022 - $66,000 (-$7500 credit/refund)
* Jan 1 2023 - $66,000 back to peak (-$7500 fed tax credit only on 7-seater)
* Jan 13 2023 - $53,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Jan 23 2023 - $53,500 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Feb 4 2023 - $55,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on all models)

It will be interesting to see what Kia EV6 value is in 3 years vs. the MY. That most likely will make you even more pissed. BTW, I looked at EV6 a while back, nice car, but dealer a douche and wanted to add on $10K to the sticker price. Now imagine how pissed I'd be if I paid that and now see the MY pricing.
The value in 3 years won't matter nearly as much as what percent of its original range remains in 10. Neither company has data on that though.

At least I got a much better APR than you can get right now.

Can 2023 purchase be filed with tax returns this year or do we have to wait? I keep seeing conflicting information
If you buy it this year, you'll file for the tax credit when you do taxes next year.

Does anyone have a list of things that current Model Y Performance has.

Like, recently they downgraded rear Brembo performance brakes on Y to small brakes with a big red cover.
Parking sensors, I understand those were removed.

What else? Is there a list?

7 seater allows for MSRP of 80K.
This is correct. I briefly considered the 7-seater, but it's only good for kids or adults 5'4" or shorter. And even then, it's ultra tight:

Tesla doesn't need to 'deplete' 18650/2170 batteries, there are building as many as they can. The 4680 is not designed to go in the 3/S/X, anyways. It would need a major reconfigure of the chassis and associated manufacturing lines.
Actually, I have seen comments from multiple car news sites stating that they are starting to put the 4680 into the Model Y, and the goal is to implement this in all Teslas including the 3/S/X. It's more bang-for-buck for Tesla, and for the customers

Tesla is a shittee company when it comes to moving their prices up and down like a yo-yo. Screwed many customers that purchased before December 2022. Especially the Model Y. But right now the price of a Model 3 is really attractive. $44k msrp - $7500 fed credit - $2k cvrp = $34.5k for a really nice car. I am going to order one right after the cvrp is confirmed and see how much depreciation has occured on the used car market. Much rather drive a Model 3 than a $24-26k civic or corolla. My wife currently owns one and I don't see any of the bad build quality mentioned. Tesla sold hundreds of thousands of vehicles, of course there are going to be some lemons. Every car manufacturers have lemons. Especially when posters are talking about VW and Hyundais and Kias brands. Those brands are renowned for having unreliable cars.
civic are 30k.. no honda dealer selling msrp without their package of protection coat, mudguard and badges without $5k markups

They are indeed putting 4680 in Austin-built model Ys. But those have lower range/less power due to the energy density of the 4680s.

Yes, the goal is to use 4680s in all Tesla models. But that could take a decade, and lots of refinement/optimizations.

Quick question: Child tax credit is refundable, right? So will the $7500 non refundable applied first , and then the refundable child tax credit can be refunded?
Not for 2022, it's non-refundable, but there is an additional child tax credit where you can get up to $1,500/child if you can't get the regular child tax credit:

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-t.../L4IBvQted

I think 2023 will be the same as 2022.

Lol, are you saying that even with the sickening one pedal braking you would have chosen the Model Y if you could buy it for $43k?

I realize that. I have been shopping for a Civic for several months. I was just being conservative and saying $26k (msrp). It is a no brainer to buy the Tesla Model 3 at $34k instead of a $30k Civic.
