Deal Details
Tesla has dropped the base price of the Tesla Model Y from $65,990 down to $52,990. This price reduction means the Model Y now qualifies for the $7,500 Federal Tax Credit (details here).

Thanks to Community Member MurraytheDemonSkull for finding this deal.

Additionally, the base prices of all Tesla vehicles have been reduced. The base Model 3 is now $43,990, which is $3,000 lower than before. The Model 3 Performance is now $53,990, which is $9,000 lower than before, and now qualifies for the tax credit.

Editor's Notes

Written by RazorConcepts
  • This is $13,000 lower (19% savings) than the previous base price.
  • Factoring in the tax credit, the price of the Model Y today is $20,000 less than one purchased in December 2022.
  • To qualify for the federal tax credit, one must not exceed the following adjusted gross income limits:
    • $300,000 for married couples filing jointly
    • $225,000 for heads of households
    • $150,000 for all other filers
  • The tax credit is not refundable, which means one must have federal tax due to take advantage of it. If the tax due is less than the credit amount, one can only claim the credit up to the amount of the tax due.
  • Refer to the forum thread for additional deal discussion.

If anyone is interested in hard numbers to figure out how much less expensive it is now compared to Tesla's best deal of 2022 - $7,500 discount with 10,000 free Supercharger miles - I bought a Tesla Model Y Long Range 7-Seater with white interior in late December 2022.

Excluding taxes and fees, I paid $63,940. It's now $59,630, which is $4,310 less, and it is eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. That means if I didn't buy it in December and bought it today, I would have saved $11,810 + sales tax, so a bit over $12,000 in savings I missed. (I got 10,000 Supercharger miles, which is worth somewhere between $500 and $1,000.) With taxes and fees, I paid $71,578.55 in total.

For those who do order, I recommend this Tesla Prep guide [glideapp.io] to check for build quality issues on delivery day.

I hope this helps,

Tesla plans to add a new radar product to its vehicles in mid-January, according to documents posted with the Federal Communications Commission.

The disclosure, which was first reported by Electrek, comes as the company faces scrutiny over the safety and capabilities of its standard advanced driver assistance system known as Autopilot and the $15,000 optional upgraded product branded as "Full Self-Driving." Tesla FSD beta software offers some automated driving features but is not a self-driving system.

The luxury EV-maker has long claimed it could reach full autonomy through a "vision only" approach that shuns other sensors like lidar and radar in favor of cameras and a deep neural network that quickly processes a vehicle's surroundings and responds in real time. Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously promised to "solve" full self-driving by the end of this year (he's also promised Tesla would get there every year for roughly nine years now). He has recently admitted the problem will take longer to solve.

And perhaps, as every other autonomous vehicle technologist says, it's not actually achievable yet through cameras alone.

The company began removing radar from its vehicles last May. In October, Tesla removed its 12 ultrasonic sensors from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for North America, Europe, the Middle East and Taiwan. Ultrasonic sensors measure distance via ultrasonic waves and are used as proximity sensors to support anti-collision safety systems, particularly in parking use cases.

Now it appears radar is back. It's not yet clear which models will get the new radar. The type of radar Tesla intends to market next year is of a frequency that's allocated by the FCC for ADAS use cases, according to Ram Machness, chief business officer at Arbe Robotics, which produces ultra-high-resolution 4D imaging radar.

Tesla had originally filed with the FCC to use the new radar — which is described in filings as "76-77 GHz Automotive Radar" — in its vehicles back in June.

"From the frequency of operation (76-77GHz) as well as the mechanical design of the sensor from Tesla's FCC filing, it appears that this radar would be utilized in ADAS applications," Steven Hong, VP and general manager of radar technology at semiconductor company Ambarella, told TechCrunch.

He noted that while the performance of this "edge" radar sensor will be limited, it's a positive development that Tesla is looking to add radar to its perception stack for safety-critical, robust performance.

Earlier this year, the FCC had granted a confidential treatment to Tesla in order to keep the details of the new radar under wraps. Late last month, Tesla applied to extend that confidentiality treatment another 60 days from its date of expiration, which is December 7.

i hope this answers your question

edit: ACTUAL LINK TO DEAL https://www.tesla.com/modely/design (SD's link goes to existing inventory page)
Wayback Machine if anyone wants to do some research: https://web.archive.org/web/20220...ely/design

I'll throw out some notable 'milestones' , focusing only on the Model Y LR base model:

* Feb 2021 - $49,000 - Roughly the lowest price for the Y LR (not including the SR @ $42k)
From this point forward, Tesla started increasing the price about $1-2 every month or so, until it peaked out at $66,000. Ex:
* May 2021 - $51,000
* July 2021 - $53,000, etc...
* Feb 2022 - $59,000, etc...
* July 2022 - $66,000 <-- peak
* Dec 1 2022 - $66,000 (-$3750 credit/refund)
* Dec 15 2022 - $66,000 (-$7500 credit/refund)
* Jan 1 2023 - $66,000 back to peak (-$7500 fed tax credit only on 7-seater)
* Jan 13 2023 - $53,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Jan 23 2023 - $53,500 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Feb 4 2023 - $55,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on all models)

Part 1. Auto loan debt has officially reached $1.52 trillion

Part 2. 16% of consumers who financed a new car pay at least $1,000/month

Part 3. Rate of severely delinquent loans has hit 2009 levels

That would suggest two things - (a) used car values are going to drop due to liquidity tightening; and (b) interest rates are going to get more expensive for banks to cover their loses.

Custom Ordered on 1/13. Picked mine up today. Didn't really find any issue's. A bunch of people picked up today at the same time. They all seem to be happy. Nobody identified any major issues. Asked the rep about gap problems, he said the cars out of Austin have much less number of pieces so there isn't really any gap problem these days

Overall very happy with my purchase. Basically 46.5K for a LR model Y. Car is driving fantastic. Suspension is a bit rough over pot holes but I can live with that.
$46.5K with the tax credit?

Did you receive a report or document from Tesla to claim the tax credit?

Q7. What information does a seller have to provide to a taxpayer purchasing a new clean vehicle to allow the taxpayer to claim the new clean vehicle credit? (added December 29, 2022)

A7. A seller must provide the following information on a report to the taxpayer and to the IRS:
  • Name and taxpayer identification number of the seller
  • Name and taxpayer identification number of the taxpayer
  • Vehicle identification number of the new clean vehicle
  • Battery capacity of the new clean vehicle
  • Verification that the taxpayer is the original user of the new clean vehicle
  • The date of the sale and the sales price of the vehicle
  • Maximum credit allowable for the new clean vehicle being sold
  • For sales after December 31, 2023, the amount of any transfer credit applied to purchase
  • A declaration under penalties of perjury from the seller

Q8. When must the seller provide the report to the taxpayer? (added December 29, 2022)

A8. The seller must provide the report to the taxpayer not later than the date the vehicle is purchased. For further details see Revenue Procedure 2022-42.

If you're comparing it to the model, 3, you'd have to get the highest trim corolla or civic in hybrid form to compete

for the corolla its the hybrid XLE, which cost $26,600, but currently all dealers are adding nonsense $3-5k of random accessories,

similar story for honda, I don't even see a hybrid option on the website but the touring is $30,000+$3-5k in add ons/markup

if you're in a busy metro area or larger suburb, they won't knock too much off the price, especially for hybrids or suvs

none of these cars are going for msrp in larger cities

tesla effectively made the model 3 $37k after rebate

it's still pricier than either option but not the silly "you can buy two!" nonsense you're spouting, just fyi
So, you're saying two of those highly reviewed autos can't be bought instead? Wrong. Even not being EV's my point stands. Two for one shows OVERPRICED. Because we are not talking about low quality autos either way. Including cost to own over time, also. The EV improvements should cost less over time. But the Y does not and on the 1st day you buy it. Yes even though the Y can cost more; for what you get; not that much more.

Math is hard.

Instead of 2 Corollas, why not get 20 horses? You can have your whole family, extended family, friends, all saving money by riding your horses.
Cute; but by in large when compared to horses then the Y and a civic or two, or Corolla is then practically the same. Even with EV vs. ICE(es). Got ya. Thanks for playing though.

Wait a sec...you got a point. So lemme restate that. If you're making under $150k and you don't have a pretty sizable savings/investment portfolio to the point where you can afford a $50k car but you're still buying it, you're not being fiscally responsible.

This tax plan still encourages yolo though.
idiots buy $25,000 suvs from mercedes with twin turbos that take $3000 in premium gas every year and $2000 in maintenance.

The sticker price of a car means nothing, the true cost of a car is how much it costs every year to keep it going for the 12,000 miles on the road.

I like Tesla's; but you can get TWO updated 2023 Toyota Corolla's *or* two 2023 Honda Civics for the same price. And no amount of Tesla 0-60 or no-gas savings beat a pair of aces. Yes two whole cars for your family to drive.

https://www.consumerreports.org/b...288866980/

If a good new Tesla was only a few thousand more ($29K?) then price (with fuel saving) would be equal to one of the pair. And I would jump all over it.

And I think Tesla has overcome a lot of unfair anti-competitive resistance; making them cost to much.
a troll is a troll.

Drop the EV debate for a second. do you know that toyota corolla start at 21.5k, but corolla GR tops out at 51K? so swap your argument for a second

one top trim corolla GR can buy you more than TWO corolla basic, largely because the 0-60 time is faster.

you want to try civic? sure
basic civic is 25k (yeap, that's base price for 2023 civic, how time has changed), civic typr R is 45K, which again is almost TWO civic, largely because it goes faster.

and this applies to almost every ICE car manufactures: Golf - R, BMW M3, MB AMG ... the list goes on.

bottom line: yes, people pay for performance. and yes, if you have a corolla/civic that does 0-60 in 4 second flat, that corolla and civic is going to cost 70k. let me remind you that model 3 performance, which is less than 55k, does 0-60 in 3.1 second. which is faster than shelby GT500, hellcat, 911 carera and DB11. THAT is value.
