Deal Details
Tesla has dropped the base price of the Tesla Model Y from $65,990 down to $52,990. This price reduction means the Model Y now qualifies for the $7,500 Federal Tax Credit (details here).

Thanks to Community Member MurraytheDemonSkull for finding this deal.

Additionally, the base prices of all Tesla vehicles have been reduced. The base Model 3 is now $43,990, which is $3,000 lower than before. The Model 3 Performance is now $53,990, which is $9,000 lower than before, and now qualifies for the tax credit.

Editor's Notes

Written by RazorConcepts
  • This is $13,000 lower (19% savings) than the previous base price.
  • Factoring in the tax credit, the price of the Model Y today is $20,000 less than one purchased in December 2022.
  • To qualify for the federal tax credit, one must not exceed the following adjusted gross income limits:
    • $300,000 for married couples filing jointly
    • $225,000 for heads of households
    • $150,000 for all other filers
  • The tax credit is not refundable, which means one must have federal tax due to take advantage of it. If the tax due is less than the credit amount, one can only claim the credit up to the amount of the tax due.
  • Refer to the forum thread for additional deal discussion.

If anyone is interested in hard numbers to figure out how much less expensive it is now compared to Tesla's best deal of 2022 - $7,500 discount with 10,000 free Supercharger miles - I bought a Tesla Model Y Long Range 7-Seater with white interior in late December 2022.

Excluding taxes and fees, I paid $63,940. It's now $59,630, which is $4,310 less, and it is eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. That means if I didn't buy it in December and bought it today, I would have saved $11,810 + sales tax, so a bit over $12,000 in savings I missed. (I got 10,000 Supercharger miles, which is worth somewhere between $500 and $1,000.) With taxes and fees, I paid $71,578.55 in total.

For those who do order, I recommend this Tesla Prep guide [glideapp.io] to check for build quality issues on delivery day.

I hope this helps,

Tesla plans to add a new radar product to its vehicles in mid-January, according to documents posted with the Federal Communications Commission.

The disclosure, which was first reported by Electrek, comes as the company faces scrutiny over the safety and capabilities of its standard advanced driver assistance system known as Autopilot and the $15,000 optional upgraded product branded as "Full Self-Driving." Tesla FSD beta software offers some automated driving features but is not a self-driving system.

The luxury EV-maker has long claimed it could reach full autonomy through a "vision only" approach that shuns other sensors like lidar and radar in favor of cameras and a deep neural network that quickly processes a vehicle's surroundings and responds in real time. Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously promised to "solve" full self-driving by the end of this year (he's also promised Tesla would get there every year for roughly nine years now). He has recently admitted the problem will take longer to solve.

And perhaps, as every other autonomous vehicle technologist says, it's not actually achievable yet through cameras alone.

The company began removing radar from its vehicles last May. In October, Tesla removed its 12 ultrasonic sensors from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for North America, Europe, the Middle East and Taiwan. Ultrasonic sensors measure distance via ultrasonic waves and are used as proximity sensors to support anti-collision safety systems, particularly in parking use cases.

Now it appears radar is back. It's not yet clear which models will get the new radar. The type of radar Tesla intends to market next year is of a frequency that's allocated by the FCC for ADAS use cases, according to Ram Machness, chief business officer at Arbe Robotics, which produces ultra-high-resolution 4D imaging radar.

Tesla had originally filed with the FCC to use the new radar — which is described in filings as "76-77 GHz Automotive Radar" — in its vehicles back in June.

"From the frequency of operation (76-77GHz) as well as the mechanical design of the sensor from Tesla's FCC filing, it appears that this radar would be utilized in ADAS applications," Steven Hong, VP and general manager of radar technology at semiconductor company Ambarella, told TechCrunch.

He noted that while the performance of this "edge" radar sensor will be limited, it's a positive development that Tesla is looking to add radar to its perception stack for safety-critical, robust performance.

Earlier this year, the FCC had granted a confidential treatment to Tesla in order to keep the details of the new radar under wraps. Late last month, Tesla applied to extend that confidentiality treatment another 60 days from its date of expiration, which is December 7.

i hope this answers your question

edit: ACTUAL LINK TO DEAL https://www.tesla.com/modely/design (SD's link goes to existing inventory page)
Wayback Machine if anyone wants to do some research: https://web.archive.org/web/20220...ely/design

I'll throw out some notable 'milestones' , focusing only on the Model Y LR base model:

* Feb 2021 - $49,000 - Roughly the lowest price for the Y LR (not including the SR @ $42k)
From this point forward, Tesla started increasing the price about $1-2 every month or so, until it peaked out at $66,000. Ex:
* May 2021 - $51,000
* July 2021 - $53,000, etc...
* Feb 2022 - $59,000, etc...
* July 2022 - $66,000 <-- peak
* Dec 1 2022 - $66,000 (-$3750 credit/refund)
* Dec 15 2022 - $66,000 (-$7500 credit/refund)
* Jan 1 2023 - $66,000 back to peak (-$7500 fed tax credit only on 7-seater)
* Jan 13 2023 - $53,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Jan 23 2023 - $53,500 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Feb 4 2023 - $55,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on all models)

I save $130 a month driving my Model Y.. most likely I would save more with one of those hybrids.. but there are some other factors.. even though I bet the cars you mentioned are safe.. the Tesla is arguably safer and even for me, twice it has moved on its own, in protecting itself from vehicles that would have hit me. Also hybrids will still have all of that maintenance that regular gas cars have. So maintenance costs will more..possibly even a lot more. Finally, my Model Y "should" last for $400,000 miles or 25 years.. (and i plan on keeping it as long as possible) so it saves me from buying 2 or possibly even 3 cars in the future!

>>> Not bashing - really want to know from people who already own one. How much of this will be true without the radar and pure vision?

Folks, I got my MYLR delivered today and am trying to file taxes to see if the tax credit is applying. However, when I try to use TurboTax, am getting the error message:

The Date Placed in Service must be in 2022 and no earlier than the Date Acquired. You can remove this vehicle if it was not placed in service in 2022.

Do anyone of you filed taxes for delivery taken after Jan 1, 2023?

i got Austin build car, and i am in CA. it is mostly the luck of a draw if your order model y (i believe 3/S/X is only at Fremont)

in term of quality, if Tesla does what everyone does, then it shouldn't matter (but obviously they don't so it does matter). if you have a choice. tesla shanghai factory product more than half of the entire tesla sold world wide, so if you have a choice...
I was assigned a Fremont car. Not complaining just trying to understand the differences. I would certainly like the better build quality and matrix LED lights. When I asked the person on the phone they told me Austin factory makes a better unibody. Any comments?

I'm fairly certain the credit is for your 2023 filing in 2024. However you can use your AGI to qualify from either your 2022 or 2023 tax years.

Yes, am trying for 2022 tax credit. If it's 2023 tax credit what is the rush to get delivery by March? Wouldn't delivery by all of 2023 count for the credit?

If it's for 2023 tax credit, what is the rush for getting delivery by March? Am sorry if I am not getting it right.

The answer is in the error message. You bought the car in 2023. You have to wait until next year when you file your 2023 taxes.

LOL, with the $500 MSRP increase
the only MY that will qualify for the tax credit = base LR model
less color choices (white/grey/blue/black, no red)
no wheel choice (ugly 19in version only)

Picked our 19' white LRY this afternoon. Austin built, no matrix light, no Radar/USS sensor, Ryzen chip.

Most joint gap is normal/consistent. Most visible inconsistent gap is between the trunk cover and the body, the front bumper has a bit larger gap to the fender, but our Honda Clarity has similar pattern. No rattling noise of any kind driving back. Don't think will be making service appointments for those. Overall I would say build quality is on par with our Honda, maybe less than our BMW 330.

Time line: order placed on 9:30am CST 1/13, 19' white LRY with no added options. Vin assigned on 1/18, picked up at afternoon 1/24. Coordinate, north DFW, TX.

Isnt it too late to get the tax credit anyway? I dont think anyone who orders after the increase would get delivery by March.
