Deal Details
Tesla has dropped the base price of the Tesla Model Y from $65,990 down to $52,990. This price reduction means the Model Y now qualifies for the $7,500 Federal Tax Credit (details here).

Thanks to Community Member MurraytheDemonSkull for finding this deal.

Additionally, the base prices of all Tesla vehicles have been reduced. The base Model 3 is now $43,990, which is $3,000 lower than before. The Model 3 Performance is now $53,990, which is $9,000 lower than before, and now qualifies for the tax credit.

Editor's Notes

Written by RazorConcepts
  • This is $13,000 lower (19% savings) than the previous base price.
  • Factoring in the tax credit, the price of the Model Y today is $20,000 less than one purchased in December 2022.
  • To qualify for the federal tax credit, one must not exceed the following adjusted gross income limits:
    • $300,000 for married couples filing jointly
    • $225,000 for heads of households
    • $150,000 for all other filers
  • The tax credit is not refundable, which means one must have federal tax due to take advantage of it. If the tax due is less than the credit amount, one can only claim the credit up to the amount of the tax due.
  • Refer to the forum thread for additional deal discussion.

If anyone is interested in hard numbers to figure out how much less expensive it is now compared to Tesla's best deal of 2022 - $7,500 discount with 10,000 free Supercharger miles - I bought a Tesla Model Y Long Range 7-Seater with white interior in late December 2022.

Excluding taxes and fees, I paid $63,940. It's now $59,630, which is $4,310 less, and it is eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. That means if I didn't buy it in December and bought it today, I would have saved $11,810 + sales tax, so a bit over $12,000 in savings I missed. (I got 10,000 Supercharger miles, which is worth somewhere between $500 and $1,000.) With taxes and fees, I paid $71,578.55 in total.

For those who do order, I recommend this Tesla Prep guide [glideapp.io] to check for build quality issues on delivery day.

I hope this helps,

Tesla plans to add a new radar product to its vehicles in mid-January, according to documents posted with the Federal Communications Commission.

The disclosure, which was first reported by Electrek, comes as the company faces scrutiny over the safety and capabilities of its standard advanced driver assistance system known as Autopilot and the $15,000 optional upgraded product branded as "Full Self-Driving." Tesla FSD beta software offers some automated driving features but is not a self-driving system.

The luxury EV-maker has long claimed it could reach full autonomy through a "vision only" approach that shuns other sensors like lidar and radar in favor of cameras and a deep neural network that quickly processes a vehicle's surroundings and responds in real time. Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously promised to "solve" full self-driving by the end of this year (he's also promised Tesla would get there every year for roughly nine years now). He has recently admitted the problem will take longer to solve.

And perhaps, as every other autonomous vehicle technologist says, it's not actually achievable yet through cameras alone.

The company began removing radar from its vehicles last May. In October, Tesla removed its 12 ultrasonic sensors from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for North America, Europe, the Middle East and Taiwan. Ultrasonic sensors measure distance via ultrasonic waves and are used as proximity sensors to support anti-collision safety systems, particularly in parking use cases.

Now it appears radar is back. It's not yet clear which models will get the new radar. The type of radar Tesla intends to market next year is of a frequency that's allocated by the FCC for ADAS use cases, according to Ram Machness, chief business officer at Arbe Robotics, which produces ultra-high-resolution 4D imaging radar.

Tesla had originally filed with the FCC to use the new radar — which is described in filings as "76-77 GHz Automotive Radar" — in its vehicles back in June.

"From the frequency of operation (76-77GHz) as well as the mechanical design of the sensor from Tesla's FCC filing, it appears that this radar would be utilized in ADAS applications," Steven Hong, VP and general manager of radar technology at semiconductor company Ambarella, told TechCrunch.

He noted that while the performance of this "edge" radar sensor will be limited, it's a positive development that Tesla is looking to add radar to its perception stack for safety-critical, robust performance.

Earlier this year, the FCC had granted a confidential treatment to Tesla in order to keep the details of the new radar under wraps. Late last month, Tesla applied to extend that confidentiality treatment another 60 days from its date of expiration, which is December 7.

i hope this answers your question

edit: ACTUAL LINK TO DEAL https://www.tesla.com/modely/design (SD's link goes to existing inventory page)
Wayback Machine if anyone wants to do some research: https://web.archive.org/web/20220...ely/design

I'll throw out some notable 'milestones' , focusing only on the Model Y LR base model:

* Feb 2021 - $49,000 - Roughly the lowest price for the Y LR (not including the SR @ $42k)
From this point forward, Tesla started increasing the price about $1-2 every month or so, until it peaked out at $66,000. Ex:
* May 2021 - $51,000
* July 2021 - $53,000, etc...
* Feb 2022 - $59,000, etc...
* July 2022 - $66,000 <-- peak
* Dec 1 2022 - $66,000 (-$3750 credit/refund)
* Dec 15 2022 - $66,000 (-$7500 credit/refund)
* Jan 1 2023 - $66,000 back to peak (-$7500 fed tax credit only on 7-seater)
* Jan 13 2023 - $53,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Jan 23 2023 - $53,500 (-$7500 fed tax credit on base model + 7-seater but not performance)
* Feb 4 2023 - $55,000 (-$7500 fed tax credit on all models)

thoughts on chargers? i have 100a panel and thinking about going with a 30a + mobile charger. what about the wall connector? i'm told with the WC i might be able to go higher to 50a. any advice would be helpful
Depends what else is on the panel, any high loads like electric ranges, electric/tankless water heaters, pumps, swimming pool, central air conditioning, electric heating, etc.? I have a 200a panel and am going with the WC, but if I only had a 100a panel I'd probably go with the mobile charger. You can certainly go for the WC, but might have to turn it down so low that it won't charge any faster than the mobile charger. But other advantages of the WC are a longer cable (24' instead of 20'), and outdoor weatherproof design.

Anyone know if there is a workaround to change the owner details after the VIN is assigned? I'm planning to cancel my order and wondering if anyone locally in Raleigh, NC would be interested to take it over.

Just placed an order fo wall charger at tesla.com but may cancel it if I can and get it at best buy instead. Mobile charger is out of stock and best buy doesn't carry it.

I never used my garage to park our cars as it was very cluttered filled with lots of stuff and mowers so I think I have to get a wall charger.

Haven't settle down which side of garage door the wall charger will hang onto yet. The hanging charge cable could be a tripping issue. Maybe need to install a solar motion light.

Good luck, it took me a while and then the loan process dragged on so long Tower CU came through first. No communication at all from loan officers at GCFU. Your looking at 2-3 weeks minimum with GCFU if not longer. I applied at both places and took whomever paid out first so I did not have to hassle with Tesla financing and a refi. You are going to have to do some calling and leg work either way to push both membership and loan process along otherwise it will be a long time if at all.
I read many reviews that were negative TCU but now I am guessing I should have went with my 1st thought which was them. Going to give GCFCU until Friday to get back to me then decide. This is becoming a problem with some of these lenders.

I couldn't get through yesterday. I hadn't tried earlier as I hadn't had delivery scheduled before then. I'm already planning to pay and then refi, so I'm not against a time crunch. That said, this is still just to become a member, not the loan app.
Someone should start a post talking about which bank, CU or lenders are moving fast for those of us who purchase during Tesla price cut and the $7500 tax credit.

Excluding some EV unicorns, what cars are "unavailable" from legacy vehicle makers?

Toyota, Ford, GM, Stellantis, Hyundai, Honda, Nissan, Subaru, VW, BMW, Mazda, Volvo, Jaguar/LR... all had YoY declines in 2022 compared to 2021 in US sales. Some by small amounts...some by a LOT (Honda was down over 33%, Nissan nearly 25%, VW down over 20%, Toyota down over 10%). Not "one niche model that was hard to get" but over their entire lineups.

Daimler was up 4%, the only legacy company on the list not in the red.

Tesla was up 77.51% year over year. Not a typo.

From whom do you think Tesla took that >77% increase in buyers from if NOT the legacy OEMs whose sales keep declining?
This is why the Tesla arguments can get so frustrating- the goalposts always land in these weird ass places.

At a really high level, Tesla had a good 2022. They make good cars. In terms of EV sales, they're killing it.

But when you look at percentage growth and decline and try to make sweeping statements regarding the relative quality of cars, or consumers voting with their wallets, you're missing the forest for the trees. The Model Y was Tesla's most popular model, and in 2022 it was sandwiched just above the Jeep Grand Cherokee and below the Toyota Tacoma in sales numbers. If it were a Toyota model, it would have been their 3rd best seller. If it were a Ford, Chevy, Honda, or GMC, it would have been 2nd place. https://www.caranddriver.com/news...cars-2022/

Anecdotally:
My wife ordered a Mustang Mach-E in September/October. No build date or any sort of update yet.
My wife ordered a Model Y on 1/12 and we had it within a week.
Similarly, I ordered a Maverick in January and it wasn't ready until November.

Tesla doing a good job with their supply is great, and they deserve credit. But I'd argue that at least in this N=1 sample, she wasn't choosing her Elonmobile over the Mach-E for any reason other than availability. She's probably not the only person for whom this is true.

Well, you could use Tesla's in-app lenders for a near instant response/process (usually). I used DCU that got everything done same day, but I'm already a member there as they did my last two Teslas' loans.

I've only seen 5.34% for WA state. My local credit unions are about 5.49% so it was easier to go through Tesla.

Can I just buy wall charger and mobile charger at one of the service centers or I need to order online and have them shipped to my door?

And do I need mobile charger so I can use other charging stations or some destination charging port? Or when I drive home and there will be a few weeks until I get an installer that I do not have the wall charger and I can use the mobile charger to connect to 110 outlet?
Also, one advice / tip not many are mentioning is to make sure your panel has enough amp. Most old houses under 1500 sq. ft. may only have 100a panel. Depending on how many loads that panel is already set up for, it may be advisable to upgrade to 200a, of which of course would cost more $$. Make sure to check your local or state for available rebates/incentives for install.

I agree there's weird goalposts here but they seem to be yours.

Nobody is cross-shopping a Model Y and a Tacoma (or any other) pickup truck.

Much of this is simply untrue if you remove pickup trucks though.

In fact if you do that, the Model Y was the 3rd best selling vehicle in the US period in 2022.

Specifically-
1) Rav4, 399,941 (1.9% decline)
2) Camry: 295,201 (5.9% decline)
3) Model Y: 252,000 (32.4% increase)
4) Honda CR-V: 238,155 (34.1 decrease)
5) Jeep Grand Cherokee: 223,345 (15.5% decrease)

BTW, the Tesla Model 3 was just behind the Jeep at 211,641 units.

So Tesla had one non-pickup ahead of every OEM except Toyota... and a second model nearly in the top 5 as well. And the ONLY two models whose sales are INCREASING not declining. With the continuing declines of the CRV and Jeep, and the price cuts on the 3 and Y, it's likely Model Y moves up to #2 in the US and Model 3 moves up to #4 for 2023.

Worldwide the Model Y is the 4th best selling vehicle of any kind even trucks in 2022.

https://electrek.co/2023/01/30/te...ry-scared/

1) Toyota Corolla: 1.12 million (down 2% vs last year)
2) Toyota RAV4: 870,000 (down 14% versus last year)
3) Ford F-Series: 787,000 (down 9% versus last year)
4) Tesla Model Y: 759,000 (up 88% versus last year)
5) Toyota Camry: 675,000 (down 3% versus last year)
6) Honda CR-V: 601,000 (down 18% versus last year)
7) Tesla Model 3: 596,000 (up 4% versus last year)

So 2 of the top 7 vehicles in the world in sales, both ahead of every model from every OEM except Toyota, Ford, and Honda... and the only two increasing YoY among the top sellers at all.

In 2023 the Y likely becomes the best selling vehicle in the world period- for sure it does in terms of revenue (it might already have done this in 2022, you'd have to have detailed data on ASP for F-150 vs Y though)- and likely in unit sales too esp if corollas decline continues. It'll easily pass everything else.
