Who Qualifies
You may qualify for a credit up to $7,500 under Internal Revenue Code Section 30D if you buy a new, qualified plug-in EV or fuel cell electric vehicle (FCV). The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 changed the rules for this credit for vehicles purchased from 2023 to 2032.
The credit is available to individuals and their businesses.
To qualify, you must:
Buy it for your own use, not for resale
Use it primarily in the U.S.
In addition, your modified adjusted gross income (AGI) may not exceed:
$300,000 for married couples filing jointly
$225,000 for heads of households
$150,000 for all other filers
You can use your modified AGI from the year you take delivery of the vehicle or the year before, whichever is less. If your modified AGI is below the threshold in 1 of the two years, you can claim the credit.
The credit is nonrefundable, so you can't get back more on the credit than you owe in taxes. You can't apply any excess credit to future tax years.

The sale qualifies only if:
You buy the vehicle new
The seller reports required information to you at the time of sale and to the IRS.
Sellers are required to report your name and taxpayer identification number to the IRS for you to be eligible to claim the credit.
The new law requires the POS (Dealer or manufacturer) to report a bunch of information on the buyer to the IRS.
Such as:
Seller/Dealer name and taxpayer ID number
Buyer's name and taxpayer ID number
Maximum credit allowable under IRC 30D for new vehicles or IRC 25E for previously owned vehicles
Vehicle identification number (VIN), unless the vehicle is not assigned one
Battery capacity
Date of sale
Sale price
For new vehicles, verification that the buyer is the original user

If all program requirements are met, the vehicle is added to the list of eligible vehicles on our website. At this time, Tesla has not applied.

Excluding taxes and fees, I paid $63,940. It's now $59,630, which is $4,310 less, and it is eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. That means if I didn't buy it in December and bought it today, I would have saved $11,810 + sales tax, so a bit over $12,000 in savings I missed. (I got 10,000 Supercharger miles, which is worth somewhere between $500 and $1,000.) With taxes and fees, I paid $71,578.55 in total.

The disclosure, which was first reported by Electrek, comes as the company faces scrutiny over the safety and capabilities of its standard advanced driver assistance system known as Autopilot and the $15,000 optional upgraded product branded as "Full Self-Driving." Tesla FSD beta software offers some automated driving features but is not a self-driving system.
The luxury EV-maker has long claimed it could reach full autonomy through a "vision only" approach that shuns other sensors like lidar and radar in favor of cameras and a deep neural network that quickly processes a vehicle's surroundings and responds in real time. Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously promised to "solve" full self-driving by the end of this year (he's also promised Tesla would get there every year for roughly nine years now). He has recently admitted the problem will take longer to solve.
And perhaps, as every other autonomous vehicle technologist says, it's not actually achievable yet through cameras alone.
The company began removing radar from its vehicles last May. In October, Tesla removed its 12 ultrasonic sensors from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for North America, Europe, the Middle East and Taiwan. Ultrasonic sensors measure distance via ultrasonic waves and are used as proximity sensors to support anti-collision safety systems, particularly in parking use cases.
Now it appears radar is back. It's not yet clear which models will get the new radar. The type of radar Tesla intends to market next year is of a frequency that's allocated by the FCC for ADAS use cases, according to Ram Machness, chief business officer at Arbe Robotics, which produces ultra-high-resolution 4D imaging radar.
Tesla had originally filed with the FCC to use the new radar — which is described in filings as "76-77 GHz Automotive Radar" — in its vehicles back in June.
"From the frequency of operation (76-77GHz) as well as the mechanical design of the sensor from Tesla's FCC filing, it appears that this radar would be utilized in ADAS applications," Steven Hong, VP and general manager of radar technology at semiconductor company Ambarella, told TechCrunch.
He noted that while the performance of this "edge" radar sensor will be limited, it's a positive development that Tesla is looking to add radar to its perception stack for safety-critical, robust performance.
Earlier this year, the FCC had granted a confidential treatment to Tesla in order to keep the details of the new radar under wraps. Late last month, Tesla applied to extend that confidentiality treatment another 60 days from its date of expiration, which is December 7.

I never used my garage to park our cars as it was very cluttered filled with lots of stuff and mowers so I think I have to get a wall charger.
Haven't settle down which side of garage door the wall charger will hang onto yet. The hanging charge cable could be a tripping issue. Maybe need to install a solar motion light.

Toyota, Ford, GM, Stellantis, Hyundai, Honda, Nissan, Subaru, VW, BMW, Mazda, Volvo, Jaguar/LR... all had YoY declines in 2022 compared to 2021 in US sales. Some by small amounts...some by a LOT (Honda was down over 33%, Nissan nearly 25%, VW down over 20%, Toyota down over 10%). Not "one niche model that was hard to get" but over their entire lineups.
Daimler was up 4%, the only legacy company on the list not in the red.
Tesla was up 77.51% year over year. Not a typo.

At a really high level, Tesla had a good 2022. They make good cars. In terms of EV sales, they're killing it.
But when you look at percentage growth and decline and try to make sweeping statements regarding the relative quality of cars, or consumers voting with their wallets, you're missing the forest for the trees. The Model Y was Tesla's most popular model, and in 2022 it was sandwiched just above the Jeep Grand Cherokee and below the Toyota Tacoma in sales numbers. Anecdotally:
My wife ordered a Mustang Mach-E in September/October. No build date or any sort of update yet.
My wife ordered a Model Y on 1/12 and we had it within a week.
Similarly, I ordered a Maverick in January and it wasn't ready until November.
Tesla doing a good job with their supply is great, and they deserve credit. But I'd argue that at least in this N=1 sample, she wasn't choosing her Elonmobile over the Mach-E for any reason other than availability. She's probably not the only person for whom this is true.

And do I need mobile charger so I can use other charging stations or some destination charging port? Or when I drive home and there will be a few weeks until I get an installer that I do not have the wall charger and I can use the mobile charger to connect to 110 outlet?

I agree there's weird goalposts here but they seem to be yours.
Nobody is cross-shopping a Model Y and a Tacoma (or any other) pickup truck.
If it were a Toyota model, it would have been their 3rd best seller. If it were a Ford, Chevy, Honda, or GMC, it would have been 2nd place.
In fact if you do that, the Model Y was the 3rd best selling vehicle in the US period in 2022.
Specifically-
1) Rav4, 399,941 (1.9% decline)
2) Camry: 295,201 (5.9% decline)
3) Model Y: 252,000 (32.4% increase)
4) Honda CR-V: 238,155 (34.1 decrease)
5) Jeep Grand Cherokee: 223,345 (15.5% decrease)
BTW, the Tesla Model 3 was just behind the Jeep at 211,641 units.
So Tesla had one non-pickup ahead of every OEM except Toyota... and a second model nearly in the top 5 as well. And the ONLY two models whose sales are INCREASING not declining. With the continuing declines of the CRV and Jeep, and the price cuts on the 3 and Y, it's likely Model Y moves up to #2 in the US and Model 3 moves up to #4 for 2023.
Worldwide the Model Y is the 4th best selling vehicle of any kind even trucks in 2022.

In 2023 the Y likely becomes the best selling vehicle in the world period- for sure it does in terms of revenue (it might already have done this in 2022, you'd have to have detailed data on ASP for F-150 vs Y though)- and likely in unit sales too esp if corollas decline continues. It'll easily pass everything else.
