Is there a reason to buy the sets? I find that if I piece together the parts I want, it seems like I get at worst the same or similar pricing.

Not USUALLY… however in the case of these seconds sales with the additions of the additional 15% code, it makes the case much harder to make. "Typically" the sets don't include the few key pieces most people can get by with just fine, the sets will include an 8" and / or 10" skillet/fry pan and most advice is to get the 12" fry pan because it can do everything the smaller ones can and more but that's not the case for the smaller sized skillets, again, as a general example. 100%. Sometimes there's a deal on a set (like the recent 5-piece for $270) that's good deal for what it is, but still only if it contains the exact pieces you want. My ideal well-stocked kitchen has no more than a handful of any one type of pan anyway (heavier and lighter stainless-clad pans, some stainless bottom pots, a cast iron pan, an enameled cast iron dutch oven, a non-stick skillet, a carbon steel wok, etc.)

is there a difference between SD5 and D5 other than the color? and I wonder why some "package damage" grade costs sometimes way less than a "second grade"? does not make sense

I'm in the brushed stainless as my main set, which has blossomed fairly large. Just now grabbing up some of the oddballs to round it out. Wish they had brushed in everything, but I'll survive without that finish.

No difference. Polished and brushed finish perform the same, and at retail they are usually the same price. Some people like brushed because they say it stays looking the same as it wears. As for the prices on the seconds sales, some things are discounted more than others and I imagine it's just about what they have in inventory to move.
