Google is offering Google Stadia Users: Stadia Controller Update to Unlock Bluetooth Mode in Stadia Controllers for Free.

  • Note, click "Switch to Bluetooth Mode" to begin the Update
About this Update:
  • Switching to Bluetooth mode downloads a software update
  • System requirements: Chrome 108 or newer
  • Once you switch your controller to Bluetooth mode, you can't change it back to use Wi-Fi on Stadia. You can still play wired with USB in Bluetooth mode.
  • You can switch to Bluetooth mode, check the controller mode, and check for Bluetooth updates until Dec 31, 2023.
F.A.Qs:
  • How do I pair my controller using Bluetooth?
    • After switching your controller into Bluetooth mode, press and hold the "Y + Stadia" buttons for 2 seconds to enter pairing mode. The status light will flash orange.
    • Then, go to the device you want to play on and pair your controller in the settings. Once paired and connected, the status light on the controller will turn solid white.

Boy did this work out great. I bought 3 stadia controllers when they were on sale. Got refunded on all of them and now can use them with bluetooth. Really a good move keeping them from the landfill. They're really well-made controllers.

Anyone know what's going to happen to the chrome cast that came with the gaming package ? Last time I checked it was locked to the stadia OS

Mine was definitely just a regular Chromecast...no special OS involved.

Compatibility with services and platforms has not been substantially tested and device compatibility will vary. Note that computers must have a Bluetooth Low Energy adapter to communicate with the Stadia Controller in Bluetooth mode. Further updates to the Stadia Controller will not be offered after the Stadia servers shut down on January 18, 2023. After the shutdown in January, you have until December 31, 2023 to update the controller so it can use Bluetooth mode.

Absolute shout out to the Google Stadia team and engineers for preventing e-waste AND supporting future gaming with their product. Stadia was good but I understand why it is shutting down. The team has handled the shut down very well (at least for consumers).

Won't work with Switch, Xbox, or PS. Hopefully 8bitdo will have an update to work w their usb adapter.

FWIW I use this Bluetooth adapter from Plugable and I was able to pair the Stadia controller in Windows 10. It's also on sale right now too!

Be aware it's a one way street - if you convert it cannot be reversed back to WiFi (not that it would be any useful as a wifi controller)

I have to give it to the Stadia Team. They even gave linux users some love. I use Linux Mint and I was able to get it to work. Nice

Been using the controller with emulators, love it other than the fact that it's really bad for fighting games. Unlocking Bluetooth will be amazing, Google being classy with this move.
