An instant bestseller that is poised to become a classic, Moonwalking with Einstein recounts Joshua Foer's yearlong quest to improve his memory under the tutelage of top "mental athletes." He draws on cutting-edge research, a surprising cultural history of remembering, and venerable tricks of the mentalist's trade to transform our understanding of human memory. From the United States Memory Championship to deep within the author's own mind, this is an electrifying work of journalism that reminds us that, in every way that matters, we are the sum of our memories.

Reminder that you could always check your library or library apps and borrow it for free. Our local library (houston, Tx) have this one on the Libby app.
Is it really important to clutter your brain by remembering everything ? Isn't it better to distill knowledge from what you learn and takeaway the highlights ? If you remember Fax, how exactly does it help you to develop and make better decisions and judgments?
Sheesh. Ever hear about not judging a book by its cover? Maybe take 10 seconds to read the description of the book before offering your off-the-cuff analysis. This is NOT a self-help book on memory improvement. It's a piece of journalism, in which the author looks at how human memories form and surveys some people with notable memories -- either impaired or particularly impressive. He then trains to partake in a few memory competitions both within and without the United States. It's really a unique, interesting read.

Good point I'll take a read first. I stopped being interested after reading the title

You are correct. All consciousness is inherently computationally bounded/limited and from such a perspective the amount of information around us is effectively infinite, just for example there are quadrillions of molecules making up the air around you all moving different directions and bouncing off if each other constantly. As such we sample only a small slice of this information the physics of which our sensory organs are designed to couple with and turn into nerve impulses sent to the brain. Our brains reconstruct the patterns within these nerve impulses into a real-time, predictive, hierarchical, stochastic, symbolic model of our environment. The symbols this model is made up are our subjective experiences, which are course-grained statistical properties of what is actually going on around us. To use the air example again we don't keep track of every molecule, but rather the meaningful properties an ensemble of too many molecules to count can have, like pressure or temperature, or you can feel gusts of wind or humidity. To borrow a metaphor we experience the forest while ignoring the trees.
Furthermore our subjective experiences derived from these course-grained statistical characteristics of our environment, via nerve impulses correlated with our environment, are not just representitive of a tiny fraction of the information inherent to the reality around us, but also designed via evolution not so much for accuracy, but rather to help us survive and reproduce, thereby allowing our DNA persist in time and create more creatures like us. This is why things like optical illusions exist; because they are functional useful to us, even if they make it so we aren't seeing even the small part of reality discernable from sensory input accurately. This has been confirmed via our experiments with evolving digital life in which we have access to the digital creatures inner thought processes, which show the ones that take in and try to process as much information as accurately as possible do terribly and die off quickly as that is not an effective way to operate and achieve evolutionary goals, the opposite in fact.

I used the technique described in this book for several upper level history classes that required me to recall a lot of details. It was very helpful (and a good read if you are into nonfiction).
I read this book in 2010. I still remember some things from it.

I went to buy it at Amazon, and it remembered that I already bought this item long time ago - anyone knows a good book on how to remember these things?

I've almost always struck out with several week / month waits for my library, but of course after purchasing and seeing this comment I look and sure enough I could have borrowed it for free 🤪
Dead at Amazon for me…was going to try the Audible version but I don't like that narrator, he reminds me too much of a bad sports announcer…oh well, just forget about it…😉
