Yes there is a time limit. But you also want to get coins for doing various moves/stomps/etc with the Mario. Obstacles and stopping on baddies will give you more coins than just jumping around. That in turn will eat up your time, that is also worth some coins as I recall, but less. So the point is getting the most coins you can in the allotted time.

Just like in the actual video game, you can run through a level and just finish, or pick up the coins and get all the baddies and bonuses.

Honestly, I think they did a really good job turning a video game into a physical game. Building the whole thing out of Lego is just an added bonus.

The whole tablet integration is more of an after thought. It isn't need to play. I prefer my kid spend less time in front of the screen if possible.

Too bad these sets cost a premium over a standard set as Nintendo gets a cut.

What is the deal with these sets? I know theyre all about the "experience" value of basically just NFC cheese but as far as actual build kits go, are they even good/interesting, or mostly just "slap gigantic pieces together for an expensive branded playset"?

I still can't understand what's the fun and challenge playing with this. There is a time limit but can't you just fly through all the obstacles and get to the finish line?

IMO this just misses the most essential part of being a Mario game, which is platforming. There is no punishment in moving at the wrong timing. Is that right?

You are comparing controller input with use of your hand? And complaining they aren't the same? Perhaps this is a sign you are not part of the target market… Mario has tons of toy lines and all suffer from this…since they aren't video games…

I have "played" with my Mario sets a few times, but my young kids find it more enjoyable (since it is geared for kids). I would still love to own every last one because I love Mario and Legos so this is a mix of two of my favorite things. I will be building a lot of display space and will have the Lego Mario sets front and center. If this goes back to this price by then, would bite, but ended up buying one of the plastic airships for a fraction of the price to display instead. I couldn't justify this one at full price over other sets since it "feels" lacking as an airship, but does have some pretty sweet features.

8 year old got this for Christmas and really enjoyed putting it together with him. We don't use it much with the other sets for the courses we make but it's a great stand alone. We slowly collect the sets with the koopalings to put on the ship. 8 year old loves playing with it as a toy as it opens up and closes so he can fly it around with bowser and the koopalings on top. All around good fun and way better than the peach castle set we got my daughter.

Wendy just came out this year and we'll wait until the set goes on sale for her and Iggys set which is still too expensive for what's in it. Then we just need to wait for Roy and Morton.

There's only like 3 large boat sections. The rest are normal lego size pieces. I had fun building it with my 6 year old and it's lots of fun once completed.

I'd say it's on par with jigsaw puzzles. It's not about the final product. But the story/adventure leading up to it. Which is either boredom or bonding.
