Why is this thread closed and no longer allowed to give a thumbs up? Seems super shady! Did slick deals do this because they aren't getting a commission from this deal? 🫣

Someone please explain why voting on this deal is closed…

Same with my MBPM1 8GB. Sold it and got a MBPM1 16GB and now have zero issues.
Funny how all these people who say 8GB is fine haven't used it. They have sources or whatever but no actual usage. But people who bought the 8GB M1s don't know anything 🙄🙄 And please, all you children who still live at home, haven't used it and don't have a clue please please keep down voting the facts! 🤣🤣🤣

Not surprisingly Apple historically has always been about preserving margins not expanding market share. That is a typical boutique product company strategy like LVMH for example. It seems it drives their stock value higher than market expansion strategy. Although I am surprised that they didn't adjust for their increased growth and much faster growing margins in subscription services, which inherently requires growth in market share. I am confident a team of bright people is calculating this 24/7
Apple doesn't have a huge cloud service impact in K12 or higher academia, probably that's the reason not to sacrifice hardware margins for base products.
Yeah, I guess my unstated assumption is that now that their hardware stack is so vertically integrated, they should be able to to get good margins out of a computer that is both genuinely a budget option and also highly performant for its competitive niche. The base iPad (up to 9th gen) hits both of those targets and seems (to my ignorant eyes) like a more complex, higher bill-of-materials object than a Mac mini.

At least, higher bill-of-materials than a Mac mini *needs* to be. Apple is (presumably) hitting its margins on its $129 Apple TV, which would have the hardware to be an impressive PC if only it had a little more RAM, SSD, I/O, and (maybe) cooling. It already has a SoC that's only 9% smaller than an M1 and made on the same process node, so they can't be saving *that* much money on silicon alone.

Is putting it in a tiny plastic case with minimal connectivity really that much of a cost saver? If it is, would it make sense to do that for an ultra-minimalist Mac (maybe targeting education) to win more volume while preserving margins? Like you say, I'm sure they have bright people working on it. I just want them to come up with a different answer :-)

Question for those with the M1 version: I'll be using this mainly for online research (safari), scanning documents, and occasional media streaming. I won't be doing any photo or video editing is 8GB RAM enough?

Definitely enough for your needs. I'm tempted to upgrade to M2 version but I have no use for it. I got my M1 mini for $570 so don't feel like selling for much less than what I paid so no other option than to keep it.

I still use my 2012 Mac Mini; its a hobgoblin with an external pass-through seagate thunderbolt interface (STAE129) as the boot drive, the internal drive is unused. I use a couple of external USB 3 drives for extra storage and time machine. I've since started using google drive for my other backup after my other external USB 3 drive died - but that's not time machine based. I have a displayport cable exiting the STAE129 to my ultrasharp monitor. When I tried to daisy chain another monitor (ultrasharp 2) using displayport, the other monitor would only show a mirror image of the first. I've read that when using bootcamp + windows on the same machine, Windows is able to treat each monitor separately and extend the desktop. Has the Mac Mini M1 (and M2) MacOS fixed this stupid problem?

If I get the M2, I'd either still have to use HDMI on one, and get a displayport adapter for the other, or did they make it so one can daisy chain. Are there different kinds of displayport adapters? The computer end of the displayport cables are the same as a thunderbolt 1 plug. My other question is, if I get an adapter (TB-3 to TB-1/2) will I be able to use my STAE129 in target mode as well as use it for displayport? I'm thinking the M2 Pto would be more future proof, and perhaps its better to get a Mac Studio on ebay - its got 32GB, M1 Max, 512GB already and the price should be dropping due to this M2. On the other hand, a base M2 + 16GB RAM is a lot less expensive - I could get TWO M2 minis for the price of a heftier setup.

If they made these upgradeable, it would put so much pressure on intel, and pc components! Still good value, but what a force apple could be for competition, if only
Agree. If they also made an ITX style motherboard and just had the ports (sata and others) accessible, that's all you'd need for a DIY system. All the hackintosh world would be buying.

Base model is suitable for 90% people, but everyone here consider himself as other 10%. This is why Apple can earn huge money very easily

I wonder if this has the same problem as MacBook Air 256gb with 8gb.
whatever issue the m2 air's were facing. I'm sure apple has worked out any hardware bugs on the mac mini since these were produced later than the m2 air's

M1 ULTRA OVERKILL? I got a mac studio with m1 ultra from costco in november (1tb ssd, 64 gb ram) which inculded and $500 cash card (total cost was $3351 accounting for 500 cash card) as my 2017 macbook pro was giving me headaches editing Final Cut Pro, I edit large 4K files from multiple sources, lots of color correction and layers, and really wanted something to be futureproof for at least next 5-6 years. Did I go over board or can I get away with the New M2 chip in a Mac Mini? I configured a Mac Mini with M2 Pro, 32 GB + 1tb ssd coming in at 1860 incl tax. What do some of you pros think. Keep M1 Ultra or Return and get this Mac Mini and put 1500 bucks back in my pocket?

Anyway to sweeten this deal other than buying apple gift card with chase or discover as that would loose the extended warranty benefit from credit card?

Unless you like to open a lot of Safari tabs. I had to swap my 8GB m1 mini for a 16GB because it kept locking up the whole computer when I was doing heavy browsing. All I had running was Safari or Chrome. But feel free to listen to all the children who've never used an 8GB mini. If you can swing it, I'd highly recommend the 16GB. Now if it's for someone older who just needs a few tabs and not much else open it is fine.

It's suitable for the 10% and the other 90% should really get the 16GB. I've used both. Apple tax does suck!

I wouldn't worry too much about the warranty. I haven't heard of too many hardware issues other than the whole MacBook Air drive issue
