Thx OP in 1 for Mac 16GB / 256GB. I have 2 TB external SSD for storage as I just can't justify the exorbitant prices for the SSD. The RAM is non-negotiable though as I am a power user and want to keep this computer for at least 5 years or more (my current 2012 Mac Mini lasted me 10 YEARS! Amazing!).

I think the 16GB/256GB SSD is the sweet spot at $740 taxed to CA
Depends. The M2 Pro gives you HDMI 2.1, double the TB4 ports, and is faster.

LOL, jeeze louise. We're having the "8gb of ram is useless" complaints from the experts who spent extra $ on the ram.

In short, if you NEED more than 8GB, you already KNOW that you need it, because your apps won't run well in 8. If you aren't sure, you'll find that most people get by fine with just 8GB.

This was more true with the m1 macs than the m2s. The m2 256GB drive uses a single flash module instead of the 2 modules in the m1's 256GB, so it reads and writes at about half the speed. That'll have an effect on performance, as you page.

Mine had 8gb. It was fine for everyday use. Faster than most other $500 computers. I wouldn't run Windows in 8GB, but I'd run linux or mac os in it, and chrome os is fine in 4GB.

Don't @ me with an argument. I don't care what sort of computer that you buy. Also, listen to the video posted above, where the intent was to "prove" you need 16GB, but the video concludes that 16GB is best, but 8GB is just fine.

Does buying apple egift card from amazon using chase amazon prime rewards still get 5% cashback or is it not considered for 5% cashback. Can someone confirm? Also, should the apple gift cards be phsically purchase from a grocery store to get 5% cashback or even the egift cards from those stores are eligble. can someone please confirm if they already purchase through gift cards
I've never seen a cashback card offer cash back on gift cards. It's always excluded. That's the problem with this strategy. I also heard that some vendors are starting to disallow hardware purchases with gift cards? Someone large, but I don't think it was apple.

Exactly! If you keep 100 Chrome tabs open (for whatever reason), then by all means get one with a 16GB RAM. If you're like me -and sounds like you- I'll spend that $180 for something else.
A good example is the M1 that I got for my wife a while back, I bought the 8 GB and that suits her just fine. She doesn't do any video editing or any intensive tasks.

It would have been a total waste of money had I gotten the 16 GB.

Having said that, I might be getting the 32 GB Mac Mini Pro for myself, since I could make use of the RAM, since I like to make music sometimes and run some intensive plugins.

I'm waiting for reviews and tests and comparisons before I make up my mind, because the price is getting into Mac Studio territory and there will be a new model of that coming eventually.

But I realize that my needs are not the same as other people's needs and too many people are projecting their own needs onto others when they make their blanket statements, IMO.

And double the memory bandwidth.

After reading all the discussions about ram amount, I'm just curious how many browser tabs people keep open at a time during a typical day.

I don't need 3 monitors (only 2, since my PC is the 3rd), why do I need double the TB4 ports? 1 for SSD, for 2nd monitor and faster in multi core apps only. Single benches look similar.

I guess the question one should ask is, is it worth double the price? For me it isn't and I am a crazy power user (but I don't do media except Camtasia)

Could be review units or other units in the wild. It's not uncommon for such scores to surface before the actual release.

Great deal! using this to replace my old macbook pro I was using as desktop. Quick question regarding mouse set up, currently using MX master 3 logitech series and the scrolling is very choppy no matter what I change in the settings. Anyone know of a mouse cheaper than apple magic mouse that I can use with this that does not have the choppy scrolling issue?

I had a similar problem with my 2013 Macbook Pro and MX Master 3. I moved the USB Unifying Receiver to the USB port on the other side and the problem went away.

For those stated purposes, the base M2 Mac Mini will be better.

You can use the iMac as an external display GRANTED you have the thunderbolt cable and adapter and running High Sierra or earlier on the iMac.
No, he can't. He has a 2015 iMac, and that won't do what you describe. Also, because assumedly he'd use his new M1 or M2 Mac (post-2019) to attach to the iMac, it simply won't work (either, also).
