So from what I found out from their live stream is it is a "V4" in a way but with simple connections/housing so it's not a true V4 but it's also not a V3. It doesn't come with magnetic base and the base is more limited in range of motion. So from an internal hardware base it's better than V3 but packaging is less than a V3. I guess In a way like an iPhone SE or maybe even an iPad mini??? where its newer hardware but in older housing.
Two cameras = two SD cards
But once the stacking kit comes it's one power cable.
They wanted to go back to being a "low priced camera company". they mentioned there are going to be a lot of different cameras coming out in the future like wide angle, super wide angle, 5x, 7x zoom cameras and other options to add onto this "OG" ecosystem.
The V3 is compatible with other items like spot light, garage door, and other items where as the OG ecosystem won't be.
It will be two series: a higher end series and a lower end series and each will be compatible with their own system. So instead of buying multiple high end cameras for simple areas you can buy cheaper cameras that do one specific job for that one location. like instead of buying two OG cameras and stack them for a wider view, you would just put a V3 pan in that location. and instead of putting a V3 or V3 pan to see down the side of the house you would just put in an OG or OG telephoto to see the entrance gate down the side of the house.
I guess that would be the best way to put it. Each OG camera will do one specific job with a processor and sensor that is better than the V3 so it's not a V3 replacement. Hope this helps
The big differences I noticed are faster response times (about 7 seconds to start stream playback on v1 vs 2 seconds on v3 for my setup) and the v3 has much better nighttime visibility. It almost looks like daylight. I'm guessing it's a bigger sensor. Nighttime on v1 is almost useless on my v1 because the street lights and car lights (or Christmas lights) make darker areas impossible to see.
It took 5 min to climb up to my v3 camera, pull out the SD card, extracted the sd_root folder from GitHub download onto the sd card, popped it back in, a nice voice said the custom firmware loaded. All the original features and WyZe app continued to work like normal.
I popped the card out again, edited the config file mentioned in the directions to add an OpenSSL key for passwordless ssh login from my ubutuntu box and enabled other things like rtsp streams.
I added the rtsp streams to my frigate box and I have the best NVR and local people detection without any company or subscription. It's best of both worlds with app and sd recording working great on Samsung endurance cards while also getting features I want and centralized recording on my Home Assistant/Frigate Ubuntu server.
Sounds awesome, but I'm guessing most people don't have personal dedicated servers set up in their homes.

You are right. It's possible to do on a NAS with a little work if comfortable with such things. My friend uses a cheap NUC from eBay and an external hard drive. I just repurposed my old pc parts after an upgrade. Coral accelerators are still hard to come by for cheap so you do need a decent CPU if doing detection on more than one cam stream.
I'd guess no according to docs but it doesn't explicitly say so. Maybe in due time they'll support it. OG seems so new it isn't even in the GitHub discussion for the project.
Same here, asking for trouble with the free trial. The Home Depot v3 cameras made me jump through more hoops to have the free monitoring that only records a few seconds and takes 5 mins to start again. My other v3 cameras had that option instantly now you have to find the free subscription while constantly getting prompted to upgrade unlimited. The cameras I do have unlimited on I canceled the subscription once it auto renewed on me and the sent me a way discounted price option
You can use an SD card to record more into the camera and access it anytime. I set it up that way and didn't need any subscription

How do you like frigate? I would like to move off blue iris so I can do away with Windows..
Used to really like these guys as an early adopter, signed up for the BETA app, did my job reporting, never got a picked for a single cool BETA program and now everything is stripped away in their attempt to hamstring you into their cam plus crap.
Huge thumbs down
This!!! So much this. I was one of the very first buyers, tested everything, sent over 5k viewer logs and now my memory cards crap out in a week or under. I swear they have to be doing it on purpose for not signing up for their membership. I have literally gone thru hundreds of dollars in memory cards. I finally switched to Blink and have been much happier.

Eh, I disagree. For our situation, it's perfect. We have 1 in the kids rooms, garage, basement, and porch. We just have it to check-in, talk if needed, or checking for package. we never intended for it to be a full security system.

Edit - Poster below found these new cameras are not eligible for the Cam Plus Lite sub.
