The only difference between this generation and the last is a new chip, which is only really marginally faster in real life performance, and 1 hour of extra battery life. Me personally, I may be looking to grab the last gen for a steep discount, but to each their own.

100% not true. In addition to the increased battery performance the M2 Pro chip model adds:

1) WiFi 6E (I think this is the first Apple product with this latest standard).
2) BT 5.3
3) HDMI 2.1 and support for 8K monitors @ 60Hz or 4K at 240Hz (M1 is HDMI 2.0 and can "only" support 6K and can't support 4K at 240Hz).

This makes the M2 model a lot more "future proof" than the M1 model (which I own). Sure, if you can get a "steep" discount on an M1 it might be worth it but it would have to be mighty steep IMHO. The M2 just launched. Once it starts shipping at end of month it will start getting discounts for $100-200 off. So I think the M1 is going to become the red-headed stepchild because it won't have the features content creators (the main buyer of MBPs) want going forward.

Thanks for the correction. I guess that makes the M2 MBP the 2nd products, which also probably means Apple will be rolling it into more products this year, which is good to see.

People talking about future proof in the same paragraph as justifying 1 generation newer products is just... it's funny but not haha funny?

You're technically right but a discounted M1 is a way way way better value -- but that's assuming we see discounted M1s

14" M1 Pro MBPs were $1600 (20% off) at Best Buy like 2 weeks ago.

absolutely this. ive yet to see a person buying latest and the greatest justifying it for future proofing not get another new device in a normal course of time. it may have a few new additionl features thats already the 'future'. it aint 'proofing' anything. In just a little while, everything around it is old. what got future proofed?

best future proofing is buying what is already perfectly good at a discount and actually buying the future, vastly upgraded tech when time comes.

Agreed. I future proofed with my 2014" mbpro that I'm still running today. That's 8+ years. The next one I get I'll keep similarly as long (even if it's an M1 Pro and not an m2). Unless there is a massive tech shift (unlikely). But most people buy under the guise of "future proof" but don't really keep them very long.

In store? Because online you need to verify yourself as a student.

With soldered components like RAM & SSD, new MacBooks have become disposable, that's why this is the best time to buy a discounted M1 pro and use it till that config lasts for you then sell or trade in. I used my 2010 MBP for 8 years but it needed a new HDD and RAM around the 5 year mark. You're not going to be able to squeeze 8 or 10 years without being able to upgrade those 2 components.
