Yes, these are cheap, but they're also 3-4 years old. Figure batteries may not be in top condition. And CPUs are several generations old; fine for standard business work but don't expect these to be the best for gaming or video creation/editing.

Likely these are off-lease business laptops. Not TC'ing, just know what you're getting into.

How on earth is an $800 Macbook a relevant alternative to a $300 refurbished Windows laptop?

I also don't understand the 'outdated' concept. An 8th gen i7 will do literally any task that 99.9999999% of computer users do today and for the next 5 years. And 32GB of RAM is a ridiculous amount for even a brand-new laptop. What are people doing with their computers that the above isn't enough? My only concern with this refurbished machine would be battery life.

That's some sound logic right there. True words of wisdom.

Instead of buying a 2 year old used car for $12k you should instead buy a $36k new car because it's better.

Dell supports BIOS firmware for several years.

This is a great deal for a used laptop. Battery life is going to suck compared to a Mac but it will be a beast of a PC
Beast of a PC? This doesn't even have a dedicated GPU.

Tell me how it will run the latest games. It just has a lot of RAM which is cheap in itself and only good for handling a lot of VMs.

I recently got the 5490. First thing i tried to do was update ram. No luck. 2 of the screws on the back cover were not coming loose. Have the correct driver for it but no luck. Ok no biggy I'll just use as is.
Nope- battery is crap. Dead in 10-15 mins and charged 50% in like 18 hours.

But customer service was nice. Offered to get me a new dell battery, only one problem - i can't open the back cover to install it. Lol

So I'm sending it back to hopefully swap for something else.

It's a crapshoot too. Each of my last 3 jobs I've had this line of laptop. Two of them were hand-me-downs and buggy as all hell. Random shutdowns, BSOD, and ran hot.

The new one was 👌

So how's the display, the problem with cheap laptops is usually the horrible eye strain from the low contrast display.

I got one of those on sale a couple of weeks ago or so. Battery wasn't in great shape (I ran the terminal command suggested on that thread to find out). I emailed their customer service with my service tag number etc, and two days later they replied that a replacement battery had been ordered for me. Today I got another email with the tracking code. So, yes, if the battery is not in great shape (less than 80% capacity, according to their terms and conditions) they'll send you a replacement for free. I'm very happy with how things turned out: laptop was in great shape (probably just used at home during Covid, being that it was first sold in 2019), and now I get a new battery too. All of this for $210 + tax!
Any chance you remember the terminal command you ran?

they mostly $600, frontpage has it new for $800

you can always sell it for a good amount

also like 10x battery life over dell crap, better screen, many times better performance
this dell has 32gb of ram. You can run virtual machines easy. And battery replacement is easier than apples glued bs. Silence

I bought one of these 2 weeks ago in on the last sale. A few points.

I bought a grade A refurb Latitude 7490 touch unit and was not impressed with the "refurbishment". Someone might have run a rag over it but that was about it. It was disappointing as the Dell Latitude 5300 refurb I got several months ago was perfect. Also, weirdly, the Intel i7 sticker was very misaligned so I removed it. There was more dust, debris, human hairs, and skin flakes embedded under the keys than I have ever seen. Every key was like a clown car of human hair. I'd think I had gotten them all out from under the keys then another would pop-up. It was disgusting. I called to rerun it but they have me a moderate discount for the hassle so I kept it and finished cleaning it. I used the little brush for cleaning my electric razor to get underneath the keys.

The unit works fine and is upgradeable to Win 11 after I upgraded the RAM memory to 16 gigs. The battery worked but was old and did not hold a charge for all that long so I bought a new one for $32 from Amazon. As a pleasant surprise, the back was easily removable to access the components so the battery swap and RAM upgrade was a smooth process. It's plenty speedy for almost any browsing and office use. General usability and build quality are much better than a cheapo new $250 - $300 unit with a cheap screen, creaky chassis, and mushy keyboard.
The dell 5491 that I bought in the summer 8400H I added another 8gb ram and it looked and ran like new.

or

That dell is just way too outdated

You can't go wrong buying a M1/M2 macbook unless you hate MacOS
The last point kind of says it all when you look at market share. If more people loved MacOS, it wouldn't be pretty much rounding error. I'm not saying people hate Mac OS, but most people aren't tech wizards that can bounce from an OS to OS seamlessly. It's also kind of hard to compare a Mac with a budget PC - they are intended for different people - never mind something like 7 Intel generations ago with a last gen Mac chip. This is why Apple was enjoying the tablet market until Microsoft made their first x86 Surface and within a revision or two, had to wake up. No one was making a quality tablet for that cost except Apple. It is why Amazon controls the budget tablet market, Apple midrange, and Apple/Microsoft duke it out over the high end now - although I know some stopped calling the Surface a tablet, rather a 2in1. That's what happens when you have your full desktop OS on a tablet and not a mobile one 🤷 ♂️

I have used a ton of these at my job. They are well off warranty for sure.

My 7390s came with nvme ssds. One was 100% & the other was 92%. Unfortunately they both had issues so I had to return them. Not sure about this model

I would expect something for Internet and MS Office at this range.

Do people expect gaming machines? Mine was $4,000 for an Alienware x17r5. There are cheaper machines, but I don't think people should expect gaming at $280 on a laptop PC.

Professional tasks usually stay with Pro cards, which are far more expensive than their laptop counterparts. On the desktop, even 4090's are cheap considering the Mac cards are $6K+ just for one 6900x.

Yes anything above $300 think twice and get m1 at $800. Tried few intel windows laptops and settled for m1 air and it performs on par with 32Gb i7 12th gen and that too without any fan noise. Build quality and everything is great in m1 and performance is way better than intels. If you need for gaming then , yes go for pc with graphic cards.
You need to lay off the Kool aid. I assume you bought one so now you have to convince others to do the same to justify your decision. 10 posts and all spouting nonsense.
