Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

These are very good soldering irons for hobbyists and I dare say useful for professionals as well.

We've purchased one of these for all of our engineers and find them pretty useful. They are quite portable if you use them with a 60W+ USBC PD power bank.

To put this in perspective we are a Metcal iron shop. For those who don't know these are $1000+ soldering systems that are the best money can buy (some may argue that the highest end hakko or weller systems are better but let's not debate that here).

If I were advising someone getting started in electronics as a hobbyist or professional with a limited budget I'd be very comfortable suggesting a PINE64 pinecil.

Be sure to also buy the USB C silicone cord. It's a life saver (from accidentally melting your cord with the iron). It's also suitably flexible for soldering work. I've not seen a silicone USBC cord anywhere else, so grab it if you buy one of these irons.

The only downside I found on these units was that they are a little finicky with respect the PD negotiation. They don't always hit 20V 3A as they should with different power banks or chargers to keep an eye on it and YMMV. Make sure you get a charger or bank that will get the full power to the pinecil for best performance.

-edit-

I just realized this is a v2 and I have the v1. they may have improved the PD compatibility but I haven't looked at their changelogs.

-edit-

I did some reading and the v2 has some modest improvemnts supporting some of the new USBC PD specs. It can hit a higher wattage in the 80s and is better tuned to the short tips (that are 6ohms) as well as supporting the longer 8ohm tips. Otherwise it's not much different from the ones we use at the office.

I did go ahead and grab a 1.5m silicone cable and the iron holder, thanks! I don't want to lead the witness about which power bank a few have recommended on the pine64 reddit sub-- which would you recommend? Also, any picks for a pd3.1 power brick?

Have this, love this. Definitely need the cord. I happened to have a Si cord that came with a power supply and found out it is made by them. Also, the default tip is just OK. Far better is a 45 degree wedge tip:

This has replaced:
1) My desktop soldering station
2) My Ryobi portable soldering tool

I own one and have for over a year and use it often. Keep it in my tool bag as I do service calls and can solder using a power bank. Temp goes to 600f and i havent had issue.

I've had this on my Amazon wish list since I read about it here on SD, and it's been around $35-36 for 2 months with free shipping. It just went out of stock the other day, so I expect it to be back at that price when it's in stock (I was waiting for below $30 to pull the trigger).

Great community-based company (mostly open source stuff, which I know isn't a hot topic here, but really inexpensive hardware for lots of options if you can stand to use forums/discord/your own aptitude for tech support). I just got mine recently, now I have the old and new version.

PINE64 also sells 4-packs of different shaped tips for 26 bucks, so if you anticipate wanting more than one soldering tip it's worth looking into.

The included tip should be OK for some limited speaker mods. I have used it to solder up to 12GA wire (haven't tried higher) and it works well enough. If you plan to do a LOT of soldering or solder larger gauge wires, then other tips (like the 45 degree tip that Vincexs linked) will be a notable improvement.

I bought this earlier this week. Too bad the micro soldering tips are not in stock.

Any recommendation on a microscope or camera to help with some micro-soldering (Switch modchip install)?

I don't anticipate going higher than 12-14. I'll just go with the included tip for now. Thanks!
