I have used these washers before on a battery that was starting to accumulate that powdery chemical reaction around the terminal. I cleaned off the powder with NOCO brand battery terminal cleaner from walmart, and reinstalled the battery with these washers. These washers are always under a dollar at walmart. It did stop the powder from forming, and the battery subsequently performed well. When I was a kid, the old guys would pour coca cola straight on the battery to remove the powder. But we also didn't use seatbelts, and you could smoke in aeroplanes, so perhaps we weren't so wise after all.

Just pour a tad bit of oil on the terminals and spread it evenly. I've been doing that for decades.

Back in the 1950s-60s My family used Vaseline on the battery terminals.

I've never tried these but like another posted, I also have the "step 2" prevention spray. I got it for like $8 and have used it on about a dozen golf cart batteries and seems fine. Not sure if these oil soak pads are better but I think my can will last YEARS spraying multiple terminals.

I've never once used these on any car I've owned and never had buildup. What are these for exactly? Usually they are red and green, but I've never seen the point. I keep my battery clean so current can't "creep" across the surface.

From my understanding it is spacer to keep the terminals from resting on the batteries surface. Some people will over tighten and put a bending pressure on terminals cracking them allowing for it to vent at the base of the terminal. In transport when batteries are stackked on top of eachother this can also be a concern or it used ot be.

My van battery had developed a bad corrosion…pouring some baking soda + hot water removed all the gunk; cleaned it well with a dry cloth then coated with a decent amount of Aquaphor baby lotion and the gunk has not come back yet in the last 1 yr.
