I've got the MG2520 and it is the best cheap printer I've ever owned. I think this one is different, though, and I am used to buying them for $20-$25 (pre-pandemic).

these printers were $20 bucks ... instead of buying new ink, it's cheaper to just buy another printer... now it's $40 bucks, not worth it

Canon hard programs these things to die after some amount of time. They blame it on some internal non-user-replaceable ink absorption pad that supposedly reaches capacity. Even if you managed to replace or clean said pad, it still wouldn't work once that "error" is tripped without it being sent to Canon for "service." I used mine for ~4 years with 90+% of the usage being scanning, not printing. Replaced the ink maybe 3x in that period. Just suddenly up and refused to work anymore one day. Wouldn't even let me scan, even though supposedly the printer part was the problem (technically mine was the 2922, which is the exact same device except mine supported WiFi connections).

After much research, I came across a service person's utility software that was supposed to reset it, but if you don't do it exactly right it bricked it permanently. Guess what I wound up doing...

Shit like that should be illegal, but since the US government is bought and paid for like every other business operating expense, that'll never happen. Really makes me wanna move to the EU at times - they're not perfect, either, but they at least *try* to keep big business in their place.

There is a class action suit regarding this....

I had the 2922 variant, which just means mine supported WiFi connection as well. Worked pretty well, actually - until I hit some internal "kill the device" timer that is hard-coded into the programming. See my previous comment above. Device itself is fine otherwise if you go into it knowing it's designed not to last forever.

Really? I'll have to look for that. Not really sure it's worth it considering how cheap the devices are, though. My complaint stems mostly from the fact that it's deliberate e-waste. I also found it impossible to find a replacement for the WiFi MG2922 variant I was using when mine died - at least a reasonably priced & NEW one.

I have had this happen, too, and have gone through several $20-$25 Canon printers. I can't tell you how many hours I have spent trying all of these crazy codes you find online to try to fix the problem only to have it not work in the end. Luckily I happened upon a 2520 that has been rock solid for years.

As for ink, the cartridges have held up, too. I purchase ink in bulk and refill myself. Sometimes they don't work right, but I learned about a trick of putting the cartridges in shallow boiling water for a minute or so and that clears things up every time.

I did end up buying an all-in-one LASER printer as a backup (from a sale posted on SD). I figure it can stay in the box until I need it and I don't need to worry about the ink drying up and screwing up the cartridges. I think the days of cheap inkjets lasting for years like my trusty 2520 are over, unfortunately.

Can you point me to the method you mentioned? I had been refilling on my own and it worked great till I did not print for months and now I think the cartridge is dried out or something.

It's pretty simple, really. Just take a small sauce pan/pot, put a half inch or so of water in the bottom, turn burner on high and wait for it to boil, stick the cartridge in the water rightside up for about 30-60 seconds. Take it out, dry it off, and stick it back in the printer. Works like a charm. I can't believe all the years of frustration I spent before I learned about this.
