I returned from a Royal Caribbean cruise just yesterday. We booked it after having a great cruise last November. They must have made some policy changes after the new year because it was not enjoyable at all.

The menu has changed with far less options, and the food went from amazing in November to just okay. They are REALLY pushing the paid dining options, and I think a strategy is to make the free main dining experience less appealing.

There are generally three people who help you with your cruise: a main server, an assistant server, and a room attendant. In the past they have been fantastic. I am wondering if Royal issued a pay cut to employees because all the workers seemed just plain sad, and the service was pretty bad. Moving around the ship, the morale of the crew seemed really somber, too. Not the typical smiles and greetings, and some crew would even mutter stuff under their breath as we passed by. Several times I heard crew making fun of or hating on "Americans".

The cruise was also woefully crowded. Not a seat to spare, and despite there being signage to not save seats or deck chairs, everybody still did it without so much as a prompt from the crew. It was impossible to sit anywhere but your room, and lines for anything were unbelievably long. That's typical on a cruise, but this one was over the top.

Two other things... the ship constantly smelled like weed. There are smoking sections, but nobody cared to follow that rule, so every inch smelled like nasty, skunky weed.

Then at night, 12 am to 3 am, somebody in a nearby stateroom was blasting loud music. After complaints from several nearby staterooms, the crew did nothing to stop it or help.

I used to love cruises... now I don't think I'll go on one again.

Cruises suck! Its like being in a movie theater with rude people but far worse!
thats why you avoid cruises that sail out of US. try cruise that sails out of other countries (probably not china) and it's such a more classy/pleasurable experience

We just booked a cruise through NCL but I imagine RC is similar. Best deal we found was using a thirty party Amex travel agent so we could get the Platinum card perks and the TA kicked in another 10% in room credits.
Did you just contact Amex and booked through amex travel portal?

You knocked on doors in the middle of the night and talked to them? Sounds like a great idea
Is it unfathomable that I talked to my neighbors the next day about the noise? And is it unfathomable that with such loud music, that they were also disturbed and awake the second and third nights? Is it weird that they also called guest services to complain? Is it inappropriate to talk to your neighbors in the hall of a cruise ship to politely ask that they not play loud, booming music all night?

In regards to your original comment, does having a negative experience that others have also "had for 25 years" negate my own experience or disqualify me from sharing my opinion? I spent a boatload (forgive the pun) on this cruise and wish I'd known what I was getting into beforehand. Sharing my experience will hopefully save somebody some money and frustration. Isn't that what slickdeals is about?

This reply sounds like complete BS. Sounds like same ship / port as your last cruise? Only reason you mentioned could be worse was the pay cut? Literally no where to sit outside your room? Wow. Ours had tons of chairs on deck that were not used since could not see the pool. Bs again. So much here but the other one about the noise complaint … did you ever ask your attendant and they told you that they could do nothing? Sounds like you needed some of that weed you smelled so much.
I'm just trying to share my experience with others, which is what the comments section of this site is for, right? My cruise experience on Liberty of the Seas out of Galveston was incredible in November. The cruise on Freedom of the Seas out if Miami was a far cry from that, and I was bewildered that the experience could change so much after just two months from ship to ship.

Just trying to save people some money and disappointment by sharing my experience. Sorry to offend you.

I love cruises. This is for one way and a inside room. It's price right, not a steal of a find. Alaska is the best, I had so much fun. Highlight was holding the sled dog puppies.

Has anyone been on this vessel or itinerary? Have been really wanting to do an Alaskan cruise.
I've been on 3 Alaska cruises, 1 on this boat. It's nice...not great. I highly recommend Norwegian cruise line for an Alaskan cruise. They have a spa room with hot tubs and saunas and chairs that is up front and you just sit in quiet and enjoy the scenery. Definitely get a balcony as you will be outside constantly for whales, glaciers, birds, etc...

September is more towards the end of their season to Alaska. I've noticed the swells are much worse then and you may have more of a hard time when traveling outside of the inside passage

Not really a deal. By the time you add a drink package, it's as much the other line that includes everything. (I just did a mock booking in case we might switch ours to RCL to save money. It wasn't any cheaper once you get all the way to an apples to apples comparison.)

Couple of things - looked for round trip (Seattle or Vancouver) and during June-Aug. Couldn't find any decent prices for those. Trying to compare the price I paid pre-pandemic (everything was more expensive than that).
