The menu has changed with far less options, and the food went from amazing in November to just okay. They are REALLY pushing the paid dining options, and I think a strategy is to make the free main dining experience less appealing.
There are generally three people who help you with your cruise: a main server, an assistant server, and a room attendant. In the past they have been fantastic. I am wondering if Royal issued a pay cut to employees because all the workers seemed just plain sad, and the service was pretty bad. Moving around the ship, the morale of the crew seemed really somber, too. Not the typical smiles and greetings, and some crew would even mutter stuff under their breath as we passed by. Several times I heard crew making fun of or hating on "Americans".
The cruise was also woefully crowded. Not a seat to spare, and despite there being signage to not save seats or deck chairs, everybody still did it without so much as a prompt from the crew. It was impossible to sit anywhere but your room, and lines for anything were unbelievably long. That's typical on a cruise, but this one was over the top.
Two other things... the ship constantly smelled like weed. There are smoking sections, but nobody cared to follow that rule, so every inch smelled like nasty, skunky weed.
Then at night, 12 am to 3 am, somebody in a nearby stateroom was blasting loud music. After complaints from several nearby staterooms, the crew did nothing to stop it or help.
I used to love cruises... now I don't think I'll go on one again.

After cruising for a couple decades I can tell you even sailing out the exact same Florida port a $150 a person starting Carnival 4 day cruise on a 20 year old ship is a lot different than a 7 day still Carnival cruise on a brand new ship that might start at $750 a person.
Also you're ever worried about crowd on a ship just sail premium lines like Princess or Celebrity. It's basically elevated carnival/royal Caribbean experiences for not a ton more money and a way better crowd. They also run some good all inclusive promotions when it comes to alcohol/wifi/gratuities and such where as Carnival and RC can be way more expensive there, especially alcohol packages.
In fact if you haven't been on a newer Princess cruise in the past few years highly recommend them as their app system is fantastic with Mediallion class. Can order food or drinks from the app anywhere on the ship and they bring it right to you very seamlessly. Did an Alaskan cruise with them last September and it was great. Medallion class changes whole cruise experience.

You cannot carry ANY liquids on boards. This means when you are going through initial security at start, with ID and so on, you cannot even bring a clear water bottle. If you have a reusable thermos, like a tumbler, they will make you dump it.
Large mouthwash is usually inspected these days. Shampoo bottles is often a dead giveaway since you get all that stuff free on a cruise, though some still prefer their better stuff so bring their own. There is a good chance it gets inspected.
It's worth mentioning that most cruise lines have harsh penalties. Like Royal Caribbean says if they catch you smuggling it on board they literally reserve the right to refuse you boarding to the cruise, at your expense, with no refunds to your cruise trip. Carnival says they will just take it away from you, so less severe. I think Norwegian is similar to Royal Caribbean.
My personal opinion? One of the fun things of cruise ships is the fact that there are 20 different themed bars on them. You are going to miss out on one of the most fun aspects of a cruise by bringing your own alcohol. I get it. It's not cheap to do an unlimited alcohol plan, especially on a long 7 night cruise like one of these Alaskan ones (can easily cost around $80 per person per day if you buy at discount in advance), but it is probably worth it. Maybe if you are doing a 2 or 3 night weekend cruise it might be more worth it.
10 years ago, there were actually slick deals on here. Now it's just average sales and the links generate revenue for SD.
OP did mention this, but dayum!

I would also argue if you're going on a cruise and want fast wifi you're cruising for a very wrong reason.
