The menu has changed with far less options, and the food went from amazing in November to just okay. They are REALLY pushing the paid dining options, and I think a strategy is to make the free main dining experience less appealing.
There are generally three people who help you with your cruise: a main server, an assistant server, and a room attendant. In the past they have been fantastic. I am wondering if Royal issued a pay cut to employees because all the workers seemed just plain sad, and the service was pretty bad. Moving around the ship, the morale of the crew seemed really somber, too. Not the typical smiles and greetings, and some crew would even mutter stuff under their breath as we passed by. Several times I heard crew making fun of or hating on "Americans".
The cruise was also woefully crowded. Not a seat to spare, and despite there being signage to not save seats or deck chairs, everybody still did it without so much as a prompt from the crew. It was impossible to sit anywhere but your room, and lines for anything were unbelievably long. That's typical on a cruise, but this one was over the top.
Two other things... the ship constantly smelled like weed. There are smoking sections, but nobody cared to follow that rule, so every inch smelled like nasty, skunky weed.
Then at night, 12 am to 3 am, somebody in a nearby stateroom was blasting loud music. After complaints from several nearby staterooms, the crew did nothing to stop it or help.
I used to love cruises... now I don't think I'll go on one again.

This came at a good time as I booked a Alaskan cruise out of Vancouver a couple of weeks ago through Priceline. For a comparison, here is a price breakdown for 2 people if anyone is thinking about a trip like this.
- 8 night cruise on Royal Caribbean Ovation of the seas May 2023 sailing.
- Ocean View Cat 4M
- Fare + taxes = $2061.53
- Airfare = $479.40 (IAD to YVR, SEA to IAD)
- Total (Gratuities, fare, taxes, airfare, fees) = $2796.93
Excursions, booze, add-on would depend on the person so they are not included in the base breakdown. Cruise.com seem to have the most consistent pricing with the highest bonus offers currently, no booking fee as well. Price went down and i was not able to make adjustments through priceline. In the past I was able to make price changes with Costco without any difficulties, so this was shock to me. I would advise not to booking through priceline.Alaskan cruise are lot pricier compared to Caribbean cruises. Excursions, base fare and flights are more. Keep that in mind to keep expectations in check.

Also, if you account for a drinks package and other add ons like daily gratuities (forced 15$/person/day) etc., Princess with its plus tier is much more 'value' and gives you wifi + drinks package + gratuities all included.
Also, a tip. You really want a balcony room on such cruises. You're blowing so much money on the Cruise, might as well splurge a little more. Ocean view rooms are never good value in my opinion. Might as well get an interior room and save a few if you aren't getting a balcony. It is often misty and foggy in Alaska so you're gonna see a bunch of gray outside with an Ocean view. At least with a Balcony, you can get some extra space and if the weather permits, you don't have to fight the crowds for some nice views.
Cruise ships (which still need planes, trains, and automobiles to get too) are a million-to-one more wasteful than any other type of vacation. Or do you think a floating city with dozens of 24/7 buffets and daily linen changes all powered by diesel fuel is 'green? Heck, you could probably go to edge of space with Bezos with less of an impact on the environment and landfills.
Not against cruise ships but try to think your point out a little better next time.
That said we did a NCL Sun from Seattle to AK this past July and it was great. Food was delicious, service was superb, and the ship was not full at all. The cruise was the one following the iceberg hit and repair that happened a couple of weeks earlier.

How about all the cruises I've been on and no Covid?
That said we did a NCL Sun from Seattle to AK this past July and it was great. Food was delicious, service was superb, and the ship was not full at all. The cruise was the one following the iceberg hit and repair that happened a couple of weeks earlier.
