The menu has changed with far less options, and the food went from amazing in November to just okay. They are REALLY pushing the paid dining options, and I think a strategy is to make the free main dining experience less appealing.
There are generally three people who help you with your cruise: a main server, an assistant server, and a room attendant. In the past they have been fantastic. I am wondering if Royal issued a pay cut to employees because all the workers seemed just plain sad, and the service was pretty bad. Moving around the ship, the morale of the crew seemed really somber, too. Not the typical smiles and greetings, and some crew would even mutter stuff under their breath as we passed by. Several times I heard crew making fun of or hating on "Americans".
The cruise was also woefully crowded. Not a seat to spare, and despite there being signage to not save seats or deck chairs, everybody still did it without so much as a prompt from the crew. It was impossible to sit anywhere but your room, and lines for anything were unbelievably long. That's typical on a cruise, but this one was over the top.
Two other things... the ship constantly smelled like weed. There are smoking sections, but nobody cared to follow that rule, so every inch smelled like nasty, skunky weed.
Then at night, 12 am to 3 am, somebody in a nearby stateroom was blasting loud music. After complaints from several nearby staterooms, the crew did nothing to stop it or help.
I used to love cruises... now I don't think I'll go on one again.

What am i not getting here?
We sail on RC quite a bit (Diamond Members). There's definitely a difference between the ship classes (Quantum, Oasis, Radiance, Freedom, Voyager, and Vision). It seems that the older, smaller ships employ what I like to refer to as the junior varsity team. I think RC uses many of those cruises to train their employees as they move up to the larger, nicer, newer ships. I'm sure those ships (Quantum and Oasis) employ crew members with more experience and those who received good passenger reviews, which would explain why some reviewers here had less than stellar experiences on some ships. They're not all the same just because they're all RC cruises. And, in response to another comment, RC owns Celebrity, so the cruises are very similar but I would give the edge to Celebrity based mostly on the food quality.
As far as getting sick on the ship goes, it can happen to anyone, anywhere in a crowd. Neither my wife nor I have ever gotten sick on a cruise and we've spent almost 150 nights on various ships. We cruised right before Covid (January 2020) and right after Covid (September 2021) and several times during 2022. We don't use the elevators on the ship unless we're carrying luggage, and we use common sense the rest of the time. I hope that everyone who takes advantage of this deal adds a few extra days to explore Alaska while there. The ports only give a quick snapshot of the coastal areas.
What am i not getting here?
Fees and taxes are $400 alone, then $15 per person per day in gratuities. It soon adds up.
This is without excursions, internet, drinks, specialty restaurants, shopping in ports.
The Alaska trips are always very expensive, our last was $15k once done and dusted. At least it's cheaper than an Hawaiian cruise.

I've never needed a visa when sailing the Caribbean.
Cruise ships (which still need planes, trains, and automobiles to get too) are a million-to-one more wasteful than any other type of vacation. Or do you think a floating city with dozens of 24/7 buffets and daily linen changes all powered by diesel fuel is 'green?' Heck, you could probably go to edge of space with Bezos with less of an impact on the environment and landfills.
Not against cruise ships but try to think your point out a little better next time.
