There is really no difference they all do the exact same thing number crunch. TT has a little flashier UI and maybe some extra hand holding for tax newbs. You do pay a high premium price for that hand holding if you do not need it. Nothing wrong with HR Block at all. Everybody has their own preferences of one over the other. I switched from TT to Block after decades of using TT and no regrets. That being said if they were the exact same price I would pick TT but TT is usually 2-3 times as much. Just not worth the difference IMO.

Free Tax USA offers free federal filing plus $15 for state. Their federal free filing is not limited by income, and is also available for taxpayers with interest income, stocks, itemizing, etc. Their UI is less fancy than turbo tax and they will also try to upsell you at every corner, but free is free!

One big difference, is functionality available. The download/installable version has more features enabled in the Deluxe version which will allow most people to do everything they need. The online version requires you to upgrade to Premier. I use Deluxe download and can do everything for stock sales, IRA, itemized deductions, etc.

I had an inheritance that included a Roth IRA that had a required minimum deduction in 2022. It seems like I'd need the Premier Edition, but it's somewhat hard to tell from their descriptions.

I also will get a K-1 this year. It seems like I should be able to do a K-1 from the deluxe downloadable edition.

Slightly confusing...

You do not need the Premiere edition. I used to buy the Premier edition thinking I needed it, but I have been using Deluxe for years, for Inherited IRAs and K-1s and it works great for those situations. Most information is directly imported from financial institutions. For my K-1 I think I had to fill out the form, but it was pretty easy to map that to what I had on my K-1.

That deal was a one day deal after Christmas and in past years was never repeated.

I'm a big believer that most people do not need the Premier version of the installable/downloadable TurboTax. I have been using Deluxe for many years for all sorts of situations. I've used it for self-employment, rental property, Inherited IRA distributions, IRA contributions, Roth conversions, stock sales, itemized deductions, and K-1s.

For those interested in how this differs from HR Block. I've run our rather complex taxes (rental income, 1099, rentals, etc) in both TT and HR Block and get pretty much the same results. Interface wise TT is a little nicer but nothing that would justify the price difference. I've also run the HR Block online version and honestly like the downloadable HR block version best. Dated interface, yes, but seems able to handle more complex scenarios easier - from my personal opinion. I've always scored HR Block for <$20 which is roughly half of what it would cost to do the same thing with TT.

Have used TT for over 10 years. Online. Love their UI/UX.
Last year, for the first time, i spotted a calc error that reduced my return by ~400. Reported to TT they couldn't fix it. Advisor pulled their experts who saw the problem but didn't acknowledge. Tweeted them, no response. Finally filed through H&R Block online. It wasn't the best interface but at least the calc was accurate.

Will be doing TT and Block simultaneously this year and match the final calcs. File with whichever is cheaper.

I couldn't figure out how to handle farm income in Deluxe and upgraded to Premier. Maybe that wasn't necessary, but it appeared to be necessary to me.

Premier isn't $60 at Newegg, it's $65, same as Amazon and Costco.
