It not just Sheepleism though, if you want the retina dpi (and it do look good), and no scaling wonkyness, you basically have this or the LG Ultrafines, which are in the same price range.

But yes, it costs a penny.

Can you define "retina display"? When they invented that term it was in conjunction with displays that had a lower resolution than (non-retina?) Samsung phones.

"Retina Display" in this context refers to a relatively high pixel density compared to other monitors - 218 pixels per inch (PPI), I think, for the Apple Studio Display, and the next best among even top monitors is ~ 170 PPI. Since the pixels are more squashed together, they are more difficult to see and thus the screen appears smoother. While it doesn't compare with the pixel density of iPhones (iPhone 14 has >450 PPI), the screen of the Apple Studio Display will appear much sharper than most other monitors. Especially for text (e.g., when coding), this makes a notable difference and is a primary driver of the cost here.

While retina display was barely a marketing term, I think you are confused about the cell phone display market when it was first introduced. It was indeed far better display than what was on Samsung phones or any phones at the time. It was first introduced with iPhone 4 (released in 2010), which had 960x640 at 326 ppi, while Samsung phone at the time, Galaxy S2 (released in 2011) had a display with 800x480 at 217 ppi. Galaxy Note had a slightly better resolution and ppi (1280x800 285ppi), but still inferior than iPhone's display at the time. It was not until Galaxy S4, released in 2013, came with Super AMOLED 1920x1080 441 ppi display that got better display than iPhone.

Further, Samsung OLED screen has PenTile subpixel, which made it worse to eyes, especially on text. They still do, but at least now they are over 400 ppi, which is good enough to mitigate the readability issue.

Is it still color accurate at 600nits?
I find it to be pretty accurate out the box. But you're better off calibrating properly for best results.

Exactly. I have a 49" Samsung G9 Odyssey with a 240Hz refresh rate and I don't give a flying f*ck about it besides playing my racing sim with my Logitech steering wheel. Other than that, I cannot stand using it for more than 15 minutes to how blurry it is just using a web browser.

My LG 5Ks in dual setup has the same real estate as FOUR 49" inch Samsungs. The text is so clear that I don't get eyestrain from looking at a SSH terminal window for 6-8 hours a day or writing code in VS Code.

I would not use my 5K monitor for gaming nor would I use my 240Hz gaming monitor for productivity.
Ooh, u rich rich.

I successfully had Best Buy price match Costco via chat this morning. I know Costco has better return policy but Best Buy has 5% rewards on their credit card. So that gives me $65 in Best Buy rewards dollars as well. I also own the Alienware OLED monitor and there is no fair comparison between these two. People who buy this monitor don't care about refresh rates or gaming. And for a 5k monitor the LG is pretty close to this price and not as nice a monitor.
I'm programmer (30+ years now), working on 2 x 24 inch 1920 x 1200 - that's the best setup I figured for myself so far. This retina thing is crap - you can endlessly increase display resolutions and it still looks blurry. Hate it!
I would prefer bigger size display over higher resolution.
Crap? What are you talking about. 1920x1200 at 24 inches is 94 PPI.

I have two 5120x2880 in the real estate of two 27 inches. At 219 PPI.
Lets try to be objective. PPI is measureably a real thing. Sharper text is sharper text. The curved "O" and "2" will have smoother, crisper edges.

This isn't that monitor. Thanks for playing.

This monitor also supports Thunderbolt. Combined with the vid cam, speakers, 5k, Apple integration… you get what you pay for.

For most ppl, a Dell 4k with USB-C is probably fine
