Yeah, I used to love Costco and did most of my grocery shopping there, but I very rarely shop there anymore due to the insane price increases. I do the math on some items and it turns out to be no different than buying it full price at Kroger or wherever. I've mostly switched to Sam's and been very happy. Also, what is up with the prime meat shortage at Costco? That was one of my last remaining reasons to go there every week. Zero prime anything at any Costco in my area.

The comments in here are so odd. Went to my local Costco first time in months- all the food prices were down. 2 dozen eggs were high, like $4.00 for 24 eggs, limit 2 but everything else was prepandemic pricing. Maybe it's regional ???

Agreed. If you shop smarter (which I think more people are) there's definitely better deals to be had. A local grocery store near us sells 3 dozen brown eggs for $6.99 which has been killer for a family that eats a ton of eggs. (Again I know egg prices differ nationwide, my Costco never has eggs, and 18 white eggs have been $7.99+ everywhere).
TheGenomeWhispererMy local Costcos literally have ZERO supply of eggs right now. You can't even buy them overpriced. Word is that the largest feed supplier in the US changed their formula or something and chickens stopped laying eggs, but people chalked it up to them just laying less eggs for the winter, since it happens. People saying within days of them changing the feed the eggs are coming back.

Coupled that with some kind of bird flu that wiped out a lot of huge chicken farms as well, it was basically a perfect storm for this.

The good news is the supply chain is going to self-fix itself within months now as the eggs are finally coming back. But ya, Costco I think buys regionally and where I am in Arizona, just this last week went into Costco and I was told they were not even able to get shipment of eggs for a couple weeks now.

Wow Eggs are $8 for 24 from Costco in NE Florida. This is as of yesterday. Also the eggs are SMALL. Not like what you used to see from a typical "large" egg.
Quote from Dealzez :
My area has always been cheap eggs. I'd get 18pk on sale for $1 like every 3-4 weeks and load up then. Lately they've all been crazy prices except Costco was the last holdout for decent egg prices at like $2.25/doz up until a month or so ago when it jumped to $3.50/doz, which seems to still be slightly better then grocery store regular prices
Quote from dealexpired :
Maybe. I have watched the prices soar over the past 1-2 years in Dallas. 30-50% increases. I always bring up the fake sales, too. Go in one week and say a salad mix is $4.99, next week there is a "sale" and the same item is now $7.99 - 3.00 = $4.99 SALE! Ugh. Sam's Club is more honest in that department - they don't price adjust on items purchased in the store because prices can fluctuate and if they do a price drop - THEY LIST THE DAMN DATE OF THE LAST PRICE AND WHAT IT WAS ORIGINALLY PRICED AT ON THAT DATE. On sale for $4.99, last list price was $10.99 on XX/XX/XXXX, even on super clearance items.

I cannot believe I am complimenting the Walmart Inc. Peeps for honesty in pricing. And their staff is so freaking nice at the Sam's Club I normally go to- they play music and it's just a fun atmosphere. I have a Sam's Plus membership(in addition to my Costco Exec membership) and their CS(phone/chat/email/etc.) has also blown me away. Seriously, me from two years ago is side-eyeing me hard for everything coming out of my mouth right now.
EFF the Eggs and their price comparisons. I am not sure why this thread is taken over with egg supply posts.

I was and maybe, perhaps still am a big proponent of Costco. But I joined Sams recently on a deal posted on SD and did some price comparisons. Sams has similar prices or better on some items. I added those to cart but did not buy and do store pickup because the Sams Club is a little further away for us and also its on the side of the town that I generally have no reason to go to.

Thats it about the prices. They are comparable between Sams and Costco, but I am not sure if one has an edge. My beef with Costco is from my last weekends visit. I usually go on weekday evenings because its a madhouse on the weekends. But despite knowing that I did not think it has become even worse. It took me 25 mins to park the car. And after going around the lot I eventually followed a guy who had exited with a full cart. And others cars were following other people who were coming out of Costco. So there was a long line of cars behind the car following whoever was coming out. And then it took me 20+ mins until I reached check-out counter. That is more than 45 mins plus gas wasted, 45 mins that I will never get back. Ohh- and my local Costco had run out of Spring rolls with Edamame which is on sale this week.

2 dozen free range eggs in the plastic container are $6,49 by me. If there is no competition in the area such as Sam's, BJ's and even Aldi's Costco will charge higher prices, even on gas. So it is bogus to claim they only upcharge 15% above their cost.

Can you name a few items where the full prices at Kroger are lower than Costco? I just want to see if this is a regional issue.

I shop at both Costco and Sam's. For most items, Sam's prices are significantly cheaper than Costco. Only reason I continue to shop at Costco is because it is very close to my house and sam's is on the other side of the town. My Costco has a minimum 15min wait to get gas whereas sam's has no wait. If Sam's moves to my side of the town, I will cancel Costco right away

Definitely regional, I almost refuse to shop anywhere else for most items.

Newer member, joined in January. My first coupon book was given to me at the warehouse. I'm set up for physical mail, will I get these offers in the mail? And if so, when? Thanks!
Just download their app and you'll find these booklets there. You don't need the physical book to get the offer. It's just informational. It should come in the mail but the app is useful for not carrying your card and looking up other items they sell online.

The one I go to the most(we have several in the area) is having real problems with lines inside - any day of the week and it is just a cluster*ck and I keep thinking it must be a staffing issue. And yeah, my usual Costco couldn't even stock some of the Hot Buys items this week.

I think I'm going to check out Sam's club now thank you
Oh, and download the app to use Scan and Go at Sam's. It is such a pleasure to scan items as I put them in my cart and hit checkout before I leave and then you just push your cart under the camera god lane and get your code scanned at the door with whichever 3 random items they choose to scan from your cart. WONDERFUL. It has also REALLY helped me with editing down my cart because I see the numbers adding up in real time and decide I don't actually need so and so until next week or whatever. Normally I would waste 20 minutes with the whole process at Costco. Plus, occasionally I discover things are even cheaper than listed price - like some frozen brussel sprouts dish was listed for $3.91 clearance, but came up $0.51 in my app and so I got a couple more.

I think it's more about what products you tend to buy. I've always done math, and wholesale club prices weren't necessarily better on a lot of products even a decade ago. Some items are indeed cheaper, but some are actually the same or even higher per unit/weight. For example, their milk price isn't good. You score better deals from regular stores. Same for some snacks. Bread tends to be cheaper at Cost, and so are eggs. Spinach is a lot cheaper at Costco, but tomato price isn't any better. You just gotta divide and conquer across stores.
That and I think a good park must be regional- milk at my Costco was $1.89 a gallon- pretty much always has been except during the first year of the pandemic. (It's been as low as $1.39 but that's been quite awhile)

Butter was 4 pounds for $13.59 (that tends to fluctuate between $10 and $15) kind of max you have to get it in quarters only instead of one pound blocks but, so be it- they recently added bread flour which was nice, very cheap, can't recall the brand but it was not pillsbury or Kirkland- maybe King Arthur- much cheaper per pound than Kroger/Meijer etc.

Cheese tend to be similiar prices to the sale prices at Kroger (talking your basics now, cheddar, mozzarella, monterrey Jack etc) obviously the "artisan" cheese are much cheaper.

Meat, shrimp etc, much better quality about 15% cheaper. I tend not to buy the ready made/frozen foods so maybe that's the difference, I don't know.

As for all the people raving about Sams, I have both memberships tho I rarely use the Sams one anymore. In the Midwest they tend to be a bit more expensive than Costco maybe 5%, the stores are very dark and the employees are rude I do like the scan and go and they have a different mix of items and some baked goods that arent bad. I mainly use the membership for online purchases of hard goods.

I'm guessing you are talking about Kirkland milk? My price comparison was on same products sold across stores (to make fair comparison). So, for example, Costco often has a certain brand milk usually as a multiple pack, but if you calculate the cost, you actually aren't saving much compared to if you buy one on sale at a normal grocery store. Just being forced to buy bulk with little savings. This could also be part of discrepancy in people's input here. Maybe some are talking about Kirkland/generic prices vs some are talking about direct comparison of same brand/products.

But does it make sense to do all that running around? Are you really going to make a special stop at a grocery store to buy a gallon of milk a week?
