You can make a single dumbell that's up to 36 pounds with this set. If you need a pair, then you can buy additional standard weight plates. Unfortunately the deal is dead though.

Spinning locks always spin loose when your doing curls or any half circle motions.

Do you use the spin lock, or clamps? Also, standard or Olympic? Asking for a friend.

Wow like everyone said, these are -really- light. I had to think about it for a sec before I realized I have more than this entire set just on the old cement plates dumbbell sitting here.

That said, everyone has a right weight for them, so if you're a slight of frame, recovering from an injury, or working small muscles, there are any number of places where these would be appropriate.

So the far more important question - are these much of a deal? Because the whole point here is to save enough that you don't need these and just do curls with your wallet.

I just bought this set. I have a gym membership and I pretty much always go there but I do like to have my own little gym in my garage. I got a boxing bag, bench, 2" hole plates, trx, pullup bar, etc. so I added this dumbbell set. This set is way too little weight for my use as I can curl 75 pound dumbbell (not barbell) but I have resistance bands. One can buy resistance bands set for cheap ($10-20). I am going to use resistance band and the dumbbell both at the same time when curling and other certain exercises. Don't be fooled by the look of resistance bands and think it is for just pilates. Sure I would prefer the regular solid dumbbells or the Bowflex adjustable but it doesn't make sense as I have a gym membership. I will use this light weight set and the resistance band as well for increased tension. It should work. Gotta improvise. I got a barbell and plenty of 2" hole plates so I have other exercise options. I highly recommend body weight exercises (little equipment like pull-up bar or TRX straps and sometimes no equipment). There are tons of body weight exercises out there. I recommend a suspension workout poster chart for reference.

There are plenty of videos on youtube showing resistance bands being effective and now I am just adding a dumbbell with some weight for better grip and to trick my mind that it is a large heavier dumbbell. More resistance. Not exactly as good as the dumbbells in at my local gym but working with what I got, limited space and spending. Improvise.

Yes they do, I have a similar set but the inner handle is rubber, they don't slip loose but the rubber compresses and bulges over time.

Vinyl dumbell set? The problem with vinyl dumbell set is that you may have like 100 pounds of plates but the dumbell won't be able to hold much weight compared to iron plates. The cement vinyl plates are way bulkier and lighter. I am looking at the Marcy vinyl dumbell set (40 pound set) for $60 at dickssportinggoods and their biggest 7.5 pound vinyl plates are really bulky. Looks like 35 pounds max is on the vinyl dumbell. Vinyl plates are really light and for beginners.

Marcy adjustable dumbell handles cost $30 with no weights. Fitness Gear and Marcy dumbells set (40 pounds) cost $100-135 at dickssportinggoods. Amazon has yes4all set for $48. I won't bring up the solid or select a weight dumbells as they cost a ton more.

I can't speak for this particular set, but I've been using spinlocks for years. They can be annoying, but I already have them, which makes it really hard to justify upgrading to a set of power blocks.

If you load up the dumbbells, tighten them, and then give them a slight turn counter-clockwise while they're resting on the (hopefully rubber) floor, they'll lock pretty tightly. Doing this, I rarely have any trouble with them loosening at all during a set, and even if they do they never loosen enough to be dangerous of the course of a single set.

After tightening the spin lock, I also apply tighetning force to the plate next to the lock for additional tightness. It has a larger diameter than the lock for added torque. For me, it has solved the occasional loosening problem.

I buy just the handles for my power cage. They are great for mounting additional bar bells that "wont kill you if dropped". Just shove the handle through the hole and use both spin locks on one side. Now you have an one inch steel rod holding up your barbell.
