You don't "need" to pay anything to create and file a state except to buy this Federal and State version. The ability to do a state return is yours when you purchase the Federal and State version. The fee is only if you want to e-file. You get five federal e-files and no state ones but can do and file as many returns as you like for both federal and state. You can "choose" to pay $19.95 to e-file but the cost of a stamp will get you the same. Have to be clear as this causes much confusion. They do sell just a federal version and you cannot file a state return with that unless you pay again to buy the state and then you would still have to pay again to e-file it. Filing and e-filing are two different things, and the words are not interchangeable. To help understand that difference, understand that you can create and file as many federal returns as you like but can only e-file five. In the case of state you can again create and file as many as you like you just get no e-files.

" 1 federal program with 5 FREE federal e-files
1 state program (additional personal state programs are 39.95 dollars each)
Most personal state programs available in January; release dates vary by state
State e-file available for 19.95 dollars (state e-file not available in NH and fees do not apply to NY state returns)"

Looks like you need to pay another $19.95 for your first state filing.

Until this year, I had used H&R Block for over 12 years. Then I found out in a few months ago that H&R Block (among other tax preparation software companies) had been allowing Facebook to pull data such as income from during the tax preparation process. https://themarkup.org/pixel-hunt/...o-facebook. I realize this is an offline version of the software and may not have that problem, but that H&R Block knew (or should have known) the information was being shared and let it happen was enough for me. Switched to another company that does not sell or share my financial information.

CCC says it's been this price several times already. Like others, I'm holding out for another drop.
